Book excerpt: Year in My Life. Have you ever wondered what it is like to be an ant - well, read this special book and find out! In her own words, Ant describes her busy life underground and the exciting adventures that she and her sisters have when they venture out of their nest. The diary format introduces youngsters to the true wonders of the natural world in an entertaining way. You can watch the ant meet her huge Queen mother, help to feed the grubs, fight off a beetle attack, and beware of the egg-stealing spiders! I have a few minutes to spare, so I can begin my diary at last. Here are a few facts about me, my ant sisters and my friends. Ants are tiny. Ants' brains are even tinier. We don't have much room for learning, but we are born knowing all we need to know - which is, how to work. All ants work very hard. We love it. Work is all we do and all we want to do. There's no time for playing. By the time l've worked, eaten and rested, it's time to work again - YIPPEE! I found all this out from 'Old Ant', our oldest and wisest sister, who knows EVERYTHING! She let me nibble some pages out of a book she found, which explains it all. l've stuck some of the pages in my diary, and there are also illustrations by Tim Hayward, Robin Carter and Adam Stower - they've been working hard too. Right, rest period over. I'm on duty again. Back to work - HOORAY!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed national bestseller, the first and only diary written by a Guantánamo detainee during his imprisonment, now with previously censored material restored. When GUANTÁNAMO DIARY was first published--heavily redacted by the U.S. government--in 2015, Mohamedou Ould Slahi was still imprisoned at the detainee camp in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, despite a federal court ruling ordering his release, and it was unclear when or if he would ever see freedom. In October 2016, he was finally released and reunited with his family. During his 14-year imprisonment, the United States never charged him with a crime. Now for the first time, he is able to tell his story in full, with previously censored material restored. This searing diary is not merely a vivid record of a miscarriage of justice, but a deeply personal memoir---terrifying, darkly humorous, and surprisingly gracious. GUANTÁNAMO DIARY is a document of immense emotional power and historical importance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diary of a Detour is film scholar and author Lesley Stern's memoir of living with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. She chronicles the fears and daily experience of coming to grips with an incurable form of cancer by describing the dramas and delving into the science. Stern also nudges cancer off center stage by turning to alternative obsessions and pleasures. In seductive writing she describes her life in the garden and kitchen, the hospital and the library, and her travels—down the street to her meditation center, across the border to Mexico, and across the world to Australia. Her immediate world is inhabited with books, movies, politics, and medical reports that provoke essayistic reflections. As her environment is shared with friends, chickens, a cat called Elvis, mountain goats, whales, lions, and microbes the book opens onto a larger than human world. Intimate and meditative, engrossing and singular, Diary of a Detour offers new ideas about what it might mean to live and think with cancer, and with chronic illness more broadly.

Book excerpt: Carolina Maria de Jesus' book, Quarto de Despejo (The Trash Room), depicted the harsh life of the slums, but it also spoke of the author's pride in her blackness, her high moral standards, and her patriotism. More than a million copies of her diary are believed to have been sold worldwide. Yet many Brazilians refused to believe that someone like de Jesus could have written such a diary, with its complicated words (some of them misused) and often lyrical phrasing as she discussed world events. Doubters prefer to believe the book was either written by Audáulio Dantas, the enterprising newspaper reporter who discovered her, or that Dantas rewrote it so substantially that her book is a fraud. With the cooperation of de Jesus' daughter, recent research shows that although Dantas deleted considerable portions of the diary (as well as a second one), every word was de Jesus'. But Dantas did "create" a different Carolina from the woman who coped with her harsh life by putting things down on paper. This book sets the record straight by providing detailed translations of de Jesus' unedited diaries and explains why Brazilian elites were motivated to obscure her true personality and present her as something she was not. It is not only about the writer but about Brazil as recorded by her sarcastic pen. The diary entries in this book span from 1958 to 1966, five years beyond text previously known to exist. They show de Jesus as she was, preserving her Joycean stream-of-consciousness language and her pithy characterizations.

A debutante at the start of her first London season, Ellen was beautiful, rich and accomplished and about to experience the world of dances, opera visits and dinner parties which were a rite-of-passage for young women of her class. To record the glittering whirl of activity, Ellen started writing a diary, a unique daily account which was discovered over a century later by her descendants. For Ellen, the path to true love did not run smooth - after a scandalous encounter with a duplicitous Swedish count, her marriage prospects were dealt a heavy blow. But Ellen was a woman ahead of her time. Undeterred by her increasing social isolation, she set off on a treacherous trip across Europe in pursuit of her beloved brother Roger, an officer in the Crimean War. In doing so she became one of the first women to visit the battlefield at Balaclava. Ellen's diaries provide a first-hand account of the realities of debutante life in Victorian London whilst also telling the story of an inspirational young woman, her quest for love and her spectacular journey from the ballroom to the battlefield.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ''How can we fight fascism,'' wrote Charles Kikuchi in June, 1942, ''if we allow its doctrines to become part of government policies?'' Kikuchi was one of the American-born majority of more than 100,000 Japanese Americans who were moved from Pacific Coast states to government relocation centers in 1942 out of declared ''military necessity.'' Presented here is the absorbing diary Kikuchi kept from December 7, 1941, to September, 1942, shortly before and during the time he and his family were forced to live in a converted horse stall at Tanforan Race Track. Kikuchi was a twenty-six-year-old graduate student in social welfare at the University of California when war broke out, and his wry observations provide an alternative to both the official view of relocation and the uninformed outrage of many of its present-day critics.''For anyone interested in the significance of ethnicity, the role of social marginality, and the insidiousness of racialism in American history, The Kikuchi Diary is indispensable reading.''--History: Review of New Books ''A powerful human document. . . . Kikuchi is an extraordinary person. He is also a gifted diarist.''--Choice

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of the report is to review the international, quantitative literature on the effects of individual, task, social, group, leader and organizational factors on both employee well-being and performance at work. We also report the results of national workshops in Nordic countries, which provide practitioners ideas on workplace initiatives to improve employee well-being and performance. From our literature review, we conclude that individual and organizational factors are more often related to both employee outcomes than group or leadership factors. Employee performance was found to be a stronger outcome than employee well-being for all workplace factors. National workshops indicate that initiatives can develop factors to improve well-being and performance. We conclude with a model that identifies the different factors that promote employee well-being and performance.
