De ahí que, junto a aspectos de la realidad social -tan complejos que el observador debe contentarse con describirlos-, haya otros que el análisis estructural logra alcanzar y cuya regularidad pone de manifiesto. De este modo, la etnografía -ayudada por la historia, la lingüística, la sociología, la psicología y el psicoanálisis-contribuye a introducir métodos rigurosos al amparo de los cuales quizás un día las ciencias humanas logren la categoría de ciencias de pleno derecho.

Esa mezcla de trabajos etnográficos y reflexiones teóricas fue tan afortunada que pocos años después publicó un segundo tomo con el mismo título —traído al español por Siglo XXI Editores en 1979—. Lejos de producir antologías caprichosas, esa fórmula de organización textual expresaba una concepción original del quehacer antropológico, gracias a la cual la mirada teórica de altura y los avances sobre el terreno conviven en una auténtica simbiosis. Tiempo atrás, con poco más de 30 años, Lévi-Strauss se había refugiado en Estados Unidos para eludir la amenaza del nazismo; esa cruda experiencia lo llevó a reflexionar sobre algunas catástrofes históricas irremediables, como el exterminio de los indios de Norteamérica o el genocidio de los judíos europeos. Entre 1941 y 1947 escribió los textos reunidos en este volumen, verdadero germen del estructuralismo y antecedente —podríamos decir "prehistórico"— de sus antropologías estructurales. Los 17 capítulos de este libro son testimonio de una época en la vida del autor y de un momento intelectual singular, en el que este notable académico francés estaba asimilando la forma de proceder de sus colegas estadounidenses. Hay aquí piezas sobre métodos —destaca uno acerca de los aportes de la sociología francesa, en particular la obra de Mauss y Durkheim—, sobre museos, sobre pequeños grupos étnicos de Brasil y sobre la búsqueda de la felicidad en Estados Unidos. Esta miscelánea rescata artículos poco conocidos, la mayoría escritos originalmente en inglés, que dan cuenta del proceso de maduración del pensamiento de Lévi-Strauss.

Like many European Jewish intellectuals, Lévi-Strauss had sought refuge in New York while the Nazis overran and occupied much of Europe. He had already been introduced to Jakobson and structural linguistics but he had not yet laid out an agenda for structuralism, which he would do in the 1950s and 60s. At the same time, these American years were the time when Lévi-Strauss would learn of some of the world's most devastating historical catastrophes - the genocide of the indigenous American peoples and of European Jews. From the beginning of the 1950s, Lévi-Strauss's anthropology tacitly bears the heavy weight of the memory and possibility of the Shoah. To speak of 'structural anthropology zero' is therefore to refer to the source of a way of thinking which turned our conception of the human on its head. But this prequel to Structural Anthropology also underlines the sense of a tabula rasa which animated its author at the end of the war as well as the project – shared with others – of a civilizational rebirth on novel grounds. Published here in English for the first time, this volume of Lévi-Strauss’s texts from the 1940s will be of great interest to students and scholars in anthropology, sociology and the social sciences generally.
