Book Synopsis Kyffin Williams by : Nicholas Sinclair
Download or read book Kyffin Williams written by Nicholas Sinclair and published by Ben Uri Gallery & Museum. This book was released on 2004 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kyffin Williams RA (b.1918) is the central figure in contemporary Welsh painting and this book, the first monograph to be published on the artist, examines the full range of his work from the mid-1940s to the present day. From the outset of his career, Kyffin Williams took both the landscape and the people of North Wales as his subjects, and he has remained faithful to them for almost sixty years. He has realised, through his oil paintings, his watercolours and his drawings, the spirit of a mountainous landscape and its inhabitants that now form the cornerstone upon which we understand and visualise the essence of North Wales.Including an authoritative introductory essay by Ian Jeffrey, one of Britain's leading art historians, the book also profiles ten sites in North Wales where the artist has worked throughout his career. The inclusion of a range of location photographs by Nicholas Sinclair helps to explain both Williams' inspiration and how he interprets the world around him.Kyffin Williams encapsulates all aspects of Wales' most famous living artist and is consequently an invaluable resource for both scholars and art collectors.

Book Synopsis The Emergence of the Antique and Curiosity Dealer in Britain 1815-1850 by : Mark Westgarth
Download or read book The Emergence of the Antique and Curiosity Dealer in Britain 1815-1850 written by Mark Westgarth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than the customary focus on the activities of individual collectors, The Emergence of the Antique and Curiosity Dealer in Britain 1815–1850: The Commodification of Historical Objects illuminates the less-studied roles played by dealers in the nineteenthcentury antique and curiosity markets. Set against the recent ‘art market turn’ in scholarly literature, this volume examines the role, activities, agency and influence of antique and curiosity dealers as they emerged in the opening decades of the nineteenth century. This study begins at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, when dealers began their wholesale importations of historical objects; it closes during the 1850s, after which the trade became increasingly specialised, reflecting the rise of historical museums such as the South Kensington Museum (V&A). Focusing on the archive of the early nineteenth-century London dealer John Coleman Isaac (c.1803–1887), as well as drawing on a wide range of other archival and contextual material, Mark Westgarth considers the emergence of the dealer in relation to a broad historical and cultural landscape. The emergence of the antique and curiosity dealer was part of the rapid economic, social, political and cultural change of early nineteenth-century Britain, centred around ideas of antiquarianism, the commercialisation of culture and a distinctive and evolving interest in historical objects. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, histories of collecting, museum and heritage studies and nineteenth-century culture.

Book excerpt: Called "the Fabergé of our time" by Diane von Furstenberg, Joel A. Rosenthal, who works in Paris under the name JAR, is one of the most acclaimed jewellery designers of the past thirty years. JAR is known for his use of precious and semi-precious stones resplendent with myriad shades of vibrant colour and set in organic shapes: one brooch, for instance, features lifelike petals in subtly differentiated hues, made from a thousand pavé sapphires and amethysts. The New York Times has described his jewellery as "belligerent, stubborn, audacious, funny, contradictory", while JAR himself has characterised his work as "somewhere between geometry and a bouquet of flowers". This book, featuring nearly 70 pieces from throughout JAR's career, provides a concise, accessible, elegantly designed retrospective of the best of his jewellery creations, and is the only book of its kind on his work available in English.
Book Synopsis The Silver of Malta by : Alaine Apap Bologna
Download or read book The Silver of Malta written by Alaine Apap Bologna and published by Midsea Books. This book was released on 1995 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue was compiled to compliment one of Patrimonju's most prestigious exhibitions, Silver of Malta. The nine hundred and ninety-five entries consist of silver items created by Maltese and foreign silversmiths that settled in Malta, ranging from mid 16th Century till the 19th Century. These objets d'art commissioned by the Maltese, the Knights and also by the British residents, became highly collectable items of exceptional craftsmanship of an international standard. The wide variety of exhibits included silver for banqueting and tea tables, the famous oil lamps (lampieri), glove trays (guantieri), salvers (sootocoppe), scent flasks (Balsamini), snuff-boxes, jewelry and several others. Religious silver was also exhibited but restricted to items used in the house or house chapel. The catalogue is forwarded by a synoptic essay on the Influence of European Silver on the Maltese Art of Silversmithing, and includes an exhaustive Glossary and an illustrated section to the Makers' Marks of all the recorded silversmiths producing silver in Malta. Alaine Apap Bologna is an art historian and connoisseur, who specialised in silver and objets d'art at Christie's Geneva becoming the head of the silver and watch departments.

Book Synopsis Sacred Images and Sacred Power in Byzantium by : Gary Vikan
Download or read book Sacred Images and Sacred Power in Byzantium written by Gary Vikan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these studies Gary Vikan has opened new perspectives on the daily life and material culture of Late Antiquity - more specifically, on icons and relics, and on objects revealing of the world of pilgrimage, the early cult of saints, and marriage. He contextualizes these familiar categories of object in the patterns of belief and ritual extracted from contemporary texts and the objects themselves, in order to understand their meaning within the everyday lives of those by whom and for whom they were made. The studies give a nuanced delineation of the inherently ambiguous boundary between conventional religion and magic, noting repeatedly those instances wherein the two are invoked in the same breath (and by way of the same art object), toward the same end. From this historically constructed matrix of art, belief, and ritual, the author derives an anthropologically defined paradigm of charisma and pilgrimage (applied in one essay, as an intriguing parallel, to deconstructing the world of a contemporary secular "saint," Elvis Presley).
