Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baroness Floella Benjamin is an inspiration, an actress and much-loved children’s television presenter who is a member of the House of Lords. But how did the girl from Trinidad end up lunching with the Queen? In What Are You Doing Here? Floella describes arriving in London as a child, part of the Windrush generation, and the pain caused by the racism she encountered every day. It was offset by the love of her parents, who gave her the pride in her heritage, self-belief and confidence that have carried her through life. From winning a role in groundbreaking musical Hair (while clearly stating she would not take her clothes off) to breaking down barriers on Play School, from refusing to be typecast in roles to speaking out for diversity at the BBC and BAFTA, she has remained true to herself. She also reveals how she met husband Keith, became a mother of two, was befriended by Kenneth Williams, hugged President Obama, and found a purpose that would underpin everything she did – campaigning for the needs of children. Sharing the lessons she has learned, imbued with her joy and positivity, this autobiography is the moving testimony of a remarkable woman.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information is central to the evolution of biological complexity, a physical system relying on a continuous supply of energy. Biology provides superb examples of the consequent Darwinian selection of mechanisms for efficient energy utilisation. Genetic information, underpinned by the Watson-Crick base-pairing rules is largely encoded by DNA, a molecule uniquely adapted to its roles in information storage and utilisation. This volume addresses two fundamental questions. Firstly, what properties of the molecule have enabled it to become the predominant genetic material in the biological world today and secondly, to what extent have the informational properties of the molecule contributed to the expansion of biological diversity and the stability of ecosystems. The author argues that bringing these two seemingly unrelated topics together enables Schrödinger's What is Life?, published before the structure of DNA was known, to be revisited and his ideas examined in the context of our current biological understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of eleven chapters and an Introduction is by and about women, the harms and crimes to which they are subjected as a result of global social processes and their efforts to take control of their own futures. The chapters explore the criminogenic and damaging consequences of the policies of the global financial institutions as well as the effects of growing economic polarisation both in pockets of the developed world and most markedly in the global south. Reflecting on this evidence, in the Introduction the editors necessarily challenge existing criminological theory by expanding and elaborating a conception of social harm that encompasses this range of problems, and exposes where new solutions derived from criminological theory are necessary. A second theme addresses human rights from the standpoint of indigenous women, minority women and those seeking refuge. Inadequate and individualised as the human rights instruments presently are, for most of these women a politics of human rights emerges as central to the achieving of legal and political equality and protection from individual violence. Women in the poorest countries, however, are sceptical as to the efficacy of rights claims in the face of the depredations of international and global capital, and the social dislocation produced thereby. Nonetheless this is a hopeful book, emphasising the contribution which academic work can make, provided the methodology is appropriately gendered and sufficiently sensitive in its guiding ideology and techniques to hear and learn from the all too often 'glocalised' other. But in the end there is no solution without politics, and in both the opening and the closing sections of this book there are chapters which address this. What continues to be special about women's political practice is the connection between the groundedness of small groups and the fluidity and flexibility of regional and international networks: the effective politics of the global age. This book, then, is a new criminology for and by women, a book which opens up a new criminological terrain for both women and men - and a book which cannot easily be read without an emotional response.

Book excerpt: "The story of Antigua, its ruling family, and the corruption that has swept over the island since 1978 provides the core of this penetrating investigation of the Caribbean's dirtiest little secret. But surrounding that core is the equally disturbing account of the United States indifference to, and deep involvement with, that corruption. First brought to public light in author Robert Coram's lengthy New Yorker article about Antigua and Barbuda, these shocking truths about a presumed island paradise are now fully revealed for the first time:" "Despite its tourist-based economy, Antigua presents the greatest large-scale health hazard of any Caribbean island. Raw sewage from more than a dozen hotels and restaurants is pumped into the sea in the middle of the island's two most popular beaches." "Since 1978, the United States has spent nearly $200 million in Antigua to maintain and expand virtually useless air force and naval bases to support a friendly but bloodsucking regime." "On at least three occasions the United States Navy smuggled arms to South Africa by transshipment through Antigua, in defiance of the United Nations embargo." "The United States Embassy in Antigua, its smallest in the world, has been presided over by a charge d'affaires who has twice been investigated by the State Department." "Among the many notorious, celebrated, and shady personages who appear in the book are Robert Vesco, the fugitive capitalist who cheated investors out of more than $200 million and who is still wanted in this country for an illegal campaign contribution to Richard Nixon; Gerald Bull, the mysterious arms-building genius who was assassinated in Brussels; Rodriguez Gacha of the Medellin drug cartel; Donald and Ivana Trump; Saddam Hussein; and Rosanno Brazzi, the 1950s movie star of South Pacific, who was indicted for gunrunning. And overriding them all are the members of Antigua's ruling family, the Birds, most particularly Prime Minister Vere Cornwall Bird and two of his sons, Lester and Vere, Jr." "V. C. Bird has held power longer than any other ruler in the world; and the unfolding of his descent into ruthlessness, greed, and venality is especially dismaying. For it was he who led his people's movement for freedom from the yoke of colonialism, only to destroy the dream he helped create."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: As DNA forensic profiling and databasing become established as key technologies in the toolbox of the forensic sciences, their expanding use raises important issues that promise to touch everyone's lives. In an authoritative global investigation of a diverse range of countries, including those at the forefront of these technologies' development and use, this book identifies and provides critical reflection upon the many issues of privacy; distributive justice; DNA information system ownership; biosurveillance; function creep; the reliability of collection, storage and analysis of DNA profiles; the possibility of transferring medical DNA information to forensics databases; and democratic involvement and transparency in governance, an emergent key theme. This book is timely and significant in providing the essential background and discussion of the ethical, legal and societal dimensions for academics, practitioners, public interest and criminal justice organisations, and students of the life sciences, law, politics, and sociology.
