Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete is commonly regarded as a mundane, prosaic material whilst the sea is perceived as a fearsome environment, endowed with mystery. Mystery stems from lack of knowledge, and to that extent both concrete and sea have something in common-we fall a long way short of knowing enough about them. Fortunately we have learned enough from our investigations and experiences to be able to set the limits within which we should operate. It is important for the engineer to seek to quantify the effects of the environment on materials and structures so that these can be made safe and adequately durable for their intended economic life. This is especially true for marine structures. Thus the primary purpose of this book is to provide a useful synthesis of the behaviour of concrete and concrete structures in the marine environment. An outline of the content of the book is provided in the latter part of the first chapter and so will not be anticipated here. The chief aim throughout, however, is to work as far as possible within a context of the appropriate governing physical phenomena, giving due consideration to the mathematical relationships between them. Moreover, without intending to be a design manual, an introduction is given to the sources of information which designers are likely to use, as well as to structural achievements. It is hoped that there should emerge an implicit integration between structure and constituent materials and the surrounding environment.

Book Synopsis Advances in Marine Antifouling Coatings and Technologies by : Claire Hellio
Download or read book Advances in Marine Antifouling Coatings and Technologies written by Claire Hellio and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2009-05-22 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine biofouling can be defined as the undesirable accumulation of microorganisms, algae and animals on structures submerged in seawater. From the dawn of navigation, marine biofouling has been a major problem for shipping in such areas as reduced speed, higher fuel consumption and increased corrosion. It also affects industries using off-shore structures such as oil and gas production and aquaculture. Growing concerns about the environmental impact of antifouling coatings has led to major new research to develop more environmentally-friendly alternatives. Advances in marine antifouling coatings and technologies summaries this wealth of research and its practical implications. This book is divided into four sub-sections which discuss: marine fouling organisms and their impact, testing and development of antifouling coatings, developments in chemically-active marine antifouling technologies, and new surface approaches to the control of marine biofouling. It provides an authoritative overview of the recent advances in understanding the biology of fouling organisms, the latest developments on antifouling screening techniques both in the field and in the laboratory, research on safer active compounds and the progress on nontoxic coatings with tailor-made surface properties. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Advances in marine antifouling coatings and technologies is a standard reference for manufacturers of marine antifouling solutions, the shipping industry, oil and gas producers, aquaculture and other industries using offshore structures, and academics researching this important area. - Assesses marine antifouling organisms and their impact, including a historical review and directions for future research - Discusses developments in antifouling coatings examining chemically-active and new surface approaches - Reviews the environmentally friendly alternative of safer active compounds and the progress of non-toxic compounds

Download or read book Advances in Nanotechnology for Marine Antifouling written by Ram Gupta and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-04-11 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Nanotechnology for Marine Antifouling surveys the latest research in the application of nanotechnology for biofouling inhibition. The book gathers in-depth information on the various micro and nano-techniques, nanocoatings, polymeric composites paints, methods of application and prevention mechanisms. This is a valuable resource for researchers and advanced students across anti-biofouling, nanotechnology, nanomaterials, polymer nanocomposites, coatings, maritime technology, chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental science, and materials science and engineering. This is also essential reading for industrial scientists, engineers, R&D, and other professionals with an interest in the use of nanotechnology for antifouling, particularly in the maritime sector. Nanotechnologies have been recognized as a powerful tool in antifouling strategies with nanocoatings with efficient properties enabling increased durability and performance in the prevention of biofouling and corrosion while replacing potentially more harmful chemicals. Examines the fundamentals of biofouling, conventional techniques, modeling and simulation, and biofouling based on natural materials Provides detailed techniques for antifouling mechanisms and materials with a range of specific properties or applications Addresses key environmental challenges, including risks of novel nanomaterials and coatings, development of eco-friendly nanocoatings, regulations and future scope

Book Synopsis Marine Concrete Structures by : Mark Alexander
Download or read book Marine Concrete Structures written by Mark Alexander and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Concrete Structures: Design, Durability and Performance comprehensively examines structures located in, under, or in close proximity to the sea. A major emphasis of the book is on the long-term performance of marine concrete structures that not only represent major infrastructure investment and provision, but are also required to operate with minimal maintenance. Chapters review the design, specification, construction, and operation of marine concrete structures, and examine their performance and durability in the marine environment. A number of case studies of significant marine concrete structures from around the world are included which help to reinforce the principles outlined in earlier chapters and provide useful background to these types of structures. The result is a thorough and up-to-date reference source that engineers, researchers, and postgraduate students in this field will find invaluable. Covers, in detail, the design, specification, construction, and operation of marine concrete structures Examines the properties and performance of concrete in the marine environment Provides case studies on significant marine concrete structures and durability-based design from around the world
Book Synopsis Microbicides for the Protection of Materials by : W. Paulus
Download or read book Microbicides for the Protection of Materials written by W. Paulus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is chiefly intended for those who are using microbicides for the protection of materials. Another purpose is to inform teachers and students working on biodeterioration and to show today's technical standard to those engaged in R&D activities in the microbicide field. When trying to classify, or to subclassify, material-protecting microbicides according to their mode of action, e.g. as membrane-active and electrophilic active ingredients, it turned out that a clear assignment was not always possible. For that reason the author has resorted to chemistry's principle of classifying according to groups of substances (e.g. alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, acids, esters, amides, etc.), thus providing the first necessary information about the micro bicides' properties. The description of the various groups of substances includes, whenever possible, an outline of the mode and mechanism of action of the active ingredients involved. The effective use of microbicides presupposes knowledge of their character istics. That is why the microbicides' chemico-physical properties, their toxicity, ecotoxicity, effectiveness, and effective spectrum are described in greater detail. As mentioned before, the characteristics of microbicides play an important role. They have to be suited to the intended application to avoid detrimental effects on the properties and the quality of the material to be protected; also production processes in which microbicides are used to avoid disturbances by microbial action must not be disturbed by the presence of those microbicides.
