Download or read book Predicting Fire Spread in Arizona's Oak Chaparral written by Anson William Lindenmuth and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five existing fire models, both experimental and theoretical, did not adequately predict rate-of-spread (ROS) when tested on single- and multiclump fires in oak chaparral in Arizona. A statistical model developed using essentially the same input variables but weighted differently accounted for 81 percent ofthe variation in ROS. A chemical coefficient that accounts for effects of fuel chemistry on ROS is applied to the model. The model provides usable guidelines for predicting fire spread in Arizona oak chaparral.

Book excerpt: Family devotions can be hard to schedule and plan--and doing so in a meaningful way can be especially difficult during the days and weeks leading up to Christmas. As you guide your family through this season, Anticipating His Arrival helps you and your family remember his first advent on Christmas and prepare for his second coming, celebrating and anticipating both events. Each day's Scripture reading includes discussion questions with accompanying responses to make it easy for you to engage the themes of preparation, anticipation, joy, and incarnation throughout the season of Advent. The reading schedule--which begins the first Sunday of Advent and ends on Christmas Day--has been adapted from the Revised Common Lectionary and includes devotions for all three years in the liturgical cycle, with every year drawing on the Synoptic Gospels.

Book Synopsis Anticipating Future Environments by : Shana Lee Hirsch
Download or read book Anticipating Future Environments written by Shana Lee Hirsch and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drought. Wildfire. Extreme flooding. How does climate change affect the daily work of scientists? Ecological restoration is often premised on the idea of returning a region to an earlier, healthier state. Yet the effects of climate change undercut that premise and challenge the ways scientists can work, destabilizing the idea of “normalcy” and revealing the politics that shape what scientists can do. How can the practice of ecological restoration shift to anticipate an increasingly dynamic future? And how does a scientific field itself adapt to climate change? Restoration efforts in the Columbia River Basin—a vast and diverse landscape experiencing warming waters, less snowpack, and greater fluctuations in precipitation—may offer answers to some of these questions. Shana Hirsch tells the story of restoration science in the basin, surveying its past and detailing the work of today’s salmon habitat restoration efforts. Her analysis offers critical insight into scientific practices, emerging approaches and ways of thinking, the incorporation of future climate change scenarios into planning, and the ultimate transformation—or adaptation—of the science of ecological restoration. For scientists and environmental managers around the globe, Anticipating Future Environments will shed light on how to more effectively cope with climate change.

Book Synopsis Living in Anticipation of the End-Time by : Edwin Zackrison
Download or read book Living in Anticipation of the End-Time written by Edwin Zackrison and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-07-19 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not long ago, those who wrote about the “end-time” were preachers—the more fundamentalist, the more extreme by some standards. “The end is coming soon,” they said, and cartoons were rampant with guys carrying placards captioned by “The End is Near!” From the time of Christ, whose noncritical predictions included such inspiration for the placards, the religious prophets could not resist emphasis on such topics. Today things are different. The “scientists” and “politicians” make the predictions. “Twelve More Years” is what we hear from the latter. But they don’t attack with religious terms. They speak of time in the context of “climate change” and “global warming.” They do not agree on how to interpret the evidence, but the religionists also had trouble with agreement. Strange interpretations of biblical texts have now gone the way of so-called science. Various elucidations carry one thing in common: none gain consensus. Some arguments enter discussions by censuring those who disagree with them. Their opponents are not allowed to speak. They must remain silent. They are called nasty names, and unfair methods are used to punish them. They try to stop the incongruous from speaking at all. Living in the “end-time” demonstrates the conflict between good and evil.

Book Synopsis Anticipation Informed Design by : Mihai Nadin
Download or read book Anticipation Informed Design written by Mihai Nadin and published by Invisible Studio at Deisgn Academy Eindhoven. This book was released on 2022-12-19 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design is a form of inventing the future. In some cases, under the pressure of the market, design became problem-solving. This illustrates the fact that, in inventing the future—which is the goal-design develops its own toolbox. This can be used for purposes such as engineering, marketing, social activities. But to reduce design to problem solving is to negate its creative nature. Awareness of possible futures is what drives anticipation-informed design. As opposed to problem-solving, which is usually design-by-commission, anticipation-informed design has a strong ethical dimension: Is the future designers are inventing an expression of respect for the world we live in, or yet another surrender to the pressure of shortsighted self-interest? May this eBook help others adopt anticipation-informed design as their goal. The world we live in is more than ever in need of design that is no longer just a service, but an effective means for disrupting the reality of blindly navigating the choppy waters of a storm that humanity itself created. Trading a meaningful future for a senseless present prosperity undermines sustainability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mathematical fire model for predicting rate of spread and intensity that is applicable to a wide range of wildland fuels and environment is presented. Methods of incorporating mixtures of fuel sizes are introduced by weighting input parameters by surface area. The input parameters do not require a prior knowledge of the burning characteristics of the fuel.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Prescribed Fire in Southern Ecosystems by : Thomas A. Waldrop
Download or read book Introduction to Prescribed Fire in Southern Ecosystems written by Thomas A. Waldrop and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prescribed burning is an important tool throughout Southern forests, grasslands, and croplands. The need to control fire became evident to allow forests to regenerate. This manual is intended to help resource managers to plan and execute prescribed burns in Southern forests and grasslands. A new appreciation and interest has developed in recent years for using prescribed fire in grasslands, especially hardwood forests, and on steep mountain slopes. Proper planning and execution of prescribed fires are necessary to reduce detrimental effects, such as the impacts on air and downstream water quality. Book Synopsis Never Anticipate the Command by : Lee Summers
Download or read book Never Anticipate the Command written by Lee Summers and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-11-17 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During her childhood, Lee Summers came to realize what a special father she had in Henry Sonnenfeld, a former US Marine. He instilled discipline and commitment in her, and he taught her about sacrifice, heroism, and patriotism. Best of all, he had wonderful bedtime stories. Never Anticipate the Command is the first in a series to share Henrys remarkable stories of being a US Marine during World War II and the Korean War. As told through his daughter, Henry reveals how, as a young man from New Jersey, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps after Pearl Harbor and fought the Japanese in the brutal Pacific campaign. Henry relates those first few harrowing days as a marine and the grueling training regimen on Parris Island. With remarkably vivid details, he recounts life on the island of Bougainville; tells the tale of his island pet, a womp-cat named Bougie Sam; and describes watching Pappy Boyingtons Black Sheep Squadron perform. Never Anticipate the Command recalls an era when men rose to action to protect their country. It shows how one man in particular served God, his country, and his familyin that order.
