Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves as a guide for readers interested in improving school climate. Using 15 years of consultation and research in a variety of United States and foreign schools, the authors strip down the elements needed to create a healthy and productive school climate. The book challenges many commonly held notions about violence prevention and outlines a simple and inexpensive formula for creating sustained change in any school. The book stresses understanding of the underlying processes involved in the bully-victim-bystander power dynamics, the value of altruism, and the use of natural leaders to begin and sustain change in a school climate. A note on the book's cover: Positive vibrations is taken from a Bob Marley song: 'Rastaman vibration positive, you can't live that negative way.' The song rallies people to be positive and strong, and to speak honestly and stand up for their rights, while taking care of themselves. Although jamaican in origin, it has universal application to be a gentle warrior in one's personal life for the good of self and others.

There is an implication that individuals who are bullied must have "asked for" this type of treatment, or deserved it. Sometimes, even the child who is bullied begins to internalize this idea. For many years, there has been a general acceptance and collective shrug when it comes to a child or adolescent with greater social capital or power pushing around a child perceived as subordinate. But bullying is not developmentally appropriate; it should not be considered a normal part of the typical social grouping that occurs throughout a child's life. Although bullying behavior endures through generations, the milieu is changing. Historically, bulling has occurred at school, the physical setting in which most of childhood is centered and the primary source for peer group formation. In recent years, however, the physical setting is not the only place bullying is occurring. Technology allows for an entirely new type of digital electronic aggression, cyberbullying, which takes place through chat rooms, instant messaging, social media, and other forms of digital electronic communication. Composition of peer groups, shifting demographics, changing societal norms, and modern technology are contextual factors that must be considered to understand and effectively react to bullying in the United States. Youth are embedded in multiple contexts and each of these contexts interacts with individual characteristics of youth in ways that either exacerbate or attenuate the association between these individual characteristics and bullying perpetration or victimization. Recognizing that bullying behavior is a major public health problem that demands the concerted and coordinated time and attention of parents, educators and school administrators, health care providers, policy makers, families, and others concerned with the care of children, this report evaluates the state of the science on biological and psychosocial consequences of peer victimization and the risk and protective factors that either increase or decrease peer victimization behavior and consequences.

Book excerpt: Who knew wearing a red hat could cause such trouble? "My Red Hat" is a modern anti-bullying story with a twist. For Piper and her father Rick, what was a fun-filled day, and an ordinary trip to the store changes quickly when a bully is triggered by the sight of matching hats. They have to think fast and act smart. Else, they stand a chance of being the subject of the latest viral video to be passed around online. Intended to be a work of fiction, this type of behavior between adults bullying children is an increasingly modern reality. Using a layered approach to storytelling, "My Red Hat" is designed to provide discussion opportunities between children and parents. As serious as it is entertaining, this anti-bullying children's book serves as an early detection if a child is being bullied, has been a witness to others being bullied, or if the child has been taking on the role of a bully. We live in a very digital world, and the rules have changed. One wrong move in public can be a big problem, edited down to a few seconds of video, with no context of what happened before or after. We owe it to children to teach smart approaches to navigate the world. We owe it to adults to remind them to take the high road, control their impulses, and be a role model. Too many adults are seeking their 15 minutes of fame, even if it's at the expense of a child. We hope this type of behavior between adults bullying children is a modern fade. Until that changes, it is essential to ensure kids are equipped with the skills to recognize bullies living in bubbles, along with acquiring the confidence to make smart decisions on what to do next. Using a layered approach to storytelling, "My Red Hat" is an entertaining take, on a serious topic. Designed to provide discussion opportunities between children and adults, this anti-bullying children's book serves as an early detection if a child is being bullied, has been a witness to others being bullied, or if the child has been taking on the role of a bully. We owe it to children to teach smart approaches to navigate the world. We owe it to adults to remind them to take the high road, control their impulses, and be a role model. Too many adults are seeking their 15 minutes of fame, even if it's at the expense of a child. The bully in our story is a work of fiction. However, stories of adult bullies trying to trap and record others in an effort to shame and post a video online seem to be a modern trend that repeats itself every few weeks. One wrong move in public can be a big problem, edited down to a few seconds of video, with no context of what happened before or after. The way the story uses imagery is covert. Some will see this as political humor. That's not the intent. Regardless of your political affiliation, most adults can find value in using a red hat as an example. They either view the red hat as a metaphor to not bully a person because of his/her appearance or as a more direct example that highlights modern concerns that parents have towards bullies in the digital age. While many adults will enjoy the storyline, ultimately children are the audience. Young children are taught about the importance of tolerance towards others different than them. In early reviews, children have universally seen the bully as a villain with behavior that is inappropriate. And while parents and other family members of these children may have a very different view of the bully, and at the extreme end some will believe the young girl was 'asking for it,' it gives us great hope that children reject the bully, and side with Piper for her freedom to wear the red hat of her choice. Children see Piper's choice to wear a red hat as something that should be respected. We agree 100%.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this timely update of the seminal classic, author and activist Jodee Blanco reveals how she simply set out to share her story-and ended up igniting a grassroots movement in the nation's schools. The first survivor of school bullying to look back on those experiences as an adult, Jodee brings you up to speed on her life and work since the book's initial release with a new chapter, all-new Letter to My Readers, and Reader's Guide. She also offers the latest information on digital and cyberbullying, the Adult Survivor of Peer Abuse, her in-school antibullying program, INJJA (It's NOT Just Joking Around!), and provides discussion questions for schools. While other children were daydreaming about dances, first kisses, and college, Jodee Blanco was trying to figure out how to go from homeroom to study hall without being taunted or spit upon as she walked through the halls. This powerful, unforgettable memoir chronicles how one child was shunned-and even physically abused-by her classmates from elementary school through high school. It is an unflinching look at what it means to be the outcast, how even the most loving parents can get it all wrong, why schools are often unable to prevent disaster, and how bullying has been misunderstood and mishandled by the mental health community"--

In a 'question and brainstorm answers' format, Ms. Kempner's book will enable families to identify specific episodes of bullying that can occur in preschool and elementary school age children. Once identified, the readers are asked to think of alternative ways to handle the situations in which bullying can, but doesn't have to, occur." --Susan D. Boulware, M.D, Assistant Clinical Professor in Pediatrics, Yale Medical University Endorsed and supported by The Turner's Syndrome Society of the United States, TSSUS This anti-bullying book is designed to teach children to have empathy towards other children that may be perceived as "different." The books helps children realize how painful it is to be teased, isolated or bullied, which hopefully will inspire them to refrain from treating others in this way. From the author: We need to come together as parents, professionals and educators to increase the awareness of the "differences" in many of our children today. We need to teach our children tolerance and acceptance of their peers who are so-called "different." As diagnoses of Autism, ADHD and other syndromes and issues are on the rise, we have no choice but to use awareness and understanding to reinforce empathy in our children. Children that are "different" should not be made to feel like outcasts; they need to be understood, not shunned or ignored. The author: Jennifer Kempner, LCSWR is a mother of three children and a New York State licensed clinical therapist. She received her Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work, specializing in Child and Family Counseling, from Fordham University in New York.
