Most of plant diseases are visible and are caused by biotic and/or abiotic factors. Symptoms are usually the results of a morphological change, alteration or damage to plant tissue and/or cells due to an interference of the plant’s metabolism. All basic structures of vascular plants are subject to attack by pathogens. The failure in accurate disease diagnosis and management may lead to huge losses in plant production and related commodities, which causes nutritional food scarcity. Typically, the appearance of a biotic symptom will indicate the relatively late stage of an infection and/or colonization of a pathogen. Expert detection, accurate diagnosis, and timely management play a significant role in keeping plants free from pathogens. In this book expert scholars share their research knowledge and key literature which are vital toward the diagnosis of plant diseases across the globe, addressing traditional plant pathology techniques, as well as advanced molecular diagnostic approach.

Book excerpt: Mango is one of the frequently cultivated seasonal fruit crops in several tropical and subtropical regions. It is consumed as whole fruits apart from serving as raw materials for most industries that are into mineral production. Mango production is, however, constrained by diseases, pests, and poor post-harvest handling of fruits. Anthracnose disease, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz and Sacc, is one of the most important yields limiting constraint in mango production across the globe. The disease occurs in both the field and post-harvesting. In the field, it affects aboveground parts, such as the stem, branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits. Anthracnose disease reduces the shelve life and marketability of mango fruit. In Ghana, anthracnose disease is responsible for about 30% yield/fruit loss. Most farmers do not control it, although some have resorted to the application of various fungicides not registered for mango anthracnose disease management in Ghana. This chapter will highlight on the importance of the disease on the mango industry in Ghana, control strategies currently employed thereby reducing the over-reliance on chemical control option and propose ways to minimize the effect of the disease in the country.

This book was released on 2017-03-30 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2017 in the subject Biology - Botany, course: Plant pathology, language: English, abstract: Colletotrichum gloeosporioides infects flowers, fruits and leaves and causes anthracnose disease in wide range of plants including, Carica papaya, Mangifera indica, Persea americana, Hevea brasiliensis and Vanilla planifolia. In this study, an endophytic fungus was isolated from Kigelia africana tree. Based on the colony morphology, spore characters and BLASTN results, it was identified as Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae. Endophytic fungi significantly suppressed mycelia growth of phytopathogenic fungi Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in antagonistic and volatile activity. The efficacy of mycelia powder and bioactive compounds extracted from endophytic fungi suppressed the mycelia growth of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides on PDA medium and detached mango leaves and the symptom of anthracnose disease was reduced. As well as, In molecular docking study, selected three bioactive compounds (2phenyl ethanol, indole 2-carboxylic acid, mellein) from endophytic fungi Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae were tested against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides fungal proteins pecate lyase, pecate lyase B, pectin lyase and showed significant interaction results. This is the first report of evaluation of the inhibitory effects of endophytic fungi Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae against anthracnose disease causing pathogen Colletotrichum gloeosporioides by bioassays and molecular docking studies. The present study recorded that endophytic fungi Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae has biocontrol potential and it provides a base for further investigation on molecular characterization. These findings warrant further investigation into optimization of metabolites to explore a potential antifungal agent for crop protection.

Comprehensive information on diseases of the most important tropical fruit cropsChapters are devoted to a single or, in some cases, a related group of host plantsThe history, distribution, importance, symptoms, aetiology, epidemiology and management of diseases of each crop are described in detailThis book offers a comprehensive review of diseases of important tropical and some subtropical fruit crops. The history, distribution, importance, etiology, epidemiology and control of diseases of each host crop are covered, along with brief summaries on the taxonomy, origins and characteristics of each host. Additional information is given on the biology and pathology of the causal agents and on new advances that change or otherwise enhance our understanding of the nature and cause of these diseases. Plant pathologists, plantation and nursery managers, lecturers and those who are involved in tropical agriculture and horticulture will find this an essential reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the Horticultural Crops, Fruits and Vegetables (FV) are of primary - portance as the key source of essential components in an adequate and balanced human diet. FV have supported largely the daily food requirement of mankind since ages and even before man learned to grow cereal crops systematically. Over the years, growing FV has been the mainstay of rural economy and has emerged as an indispensable part of agriculture world over, offering farmers a wide range of crops in varied topography and climate. In certain parts of the world, FV are the major dietary staple. Apart from being a rich source of vitamins and minerals, this sector also contributes significantly in economy of the region or the nation. The increased income from per unit area of FV is far ahead and can not be compared with that of cereal crops. A recent survey by the Economist revealed that the world population has - creased by 90 % in the past 40 years while food production has increased only by 25 % per head. With an additional 1. 5 billion mouth to feed by 2020, farmers worldwide have to produce 39 % more. Looking at the load of the future food requirement, the global increased production of FV during last few years has absorbed the additional food requirement and accordingly the eating habits are also changing and shifting - wards more consumption of these commodities worldwide.
