Download or read book God with Us written by Ansley L. Quiros and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many, the struggle over civil rights was not just about lunch counters, waiting rooms, or even access to the vote; it was also about Christian theology. Since both activists and segregationists ardently claimed that God was on their side, racial issues were imbued with religious meanings from all sides. Whether in the traditional sanctuaries of the major white Protestant denominations, in the mass meetings in black churches, or in Christian expressions of interracialism, southerners resisted, pursued, and questioned racial change within various theological traditions. God with Us examines the theological struggle over racial justice through the story of one southern town--Americus, Georgia--where ordinary Americans sought and confronted racial change in the twentieth century. Documenting the passion and virulence of these contestations, this book offers insight into how midcentury battles over theology and race affected the rise of the Religious Right and indeed continue to resonate deeply in American life.

Download or read book Ansley written by Philip A. Wigent and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every family must deal with both good and bad, along with the surprises of life. In Ansley, a fictionalized memoir, author Philip Wigent explores these issues among the early generations of his family. Building a narrative based on old letters and documents and oral history, Wigent tells the story of his familys first three generations, sharing fifty years of family lore. Precipitated by an unwed pregnancy, two sisterseighteen-year-old Emmaline and twenty-year-old Sarah Shipmanleave their comfortable home in Pennsylvania in 1860 and travel to rural Indiana, where they must start a new life. As the story evolves, it shows how one generation merges into the next, forging the future for each subsequent generation. Ross, Emmalines grandson appears. Starting from his origins on the plains of Nebraska, Ansley follows him as he grows from a shy child to a teacher to a soldier on the fringes of World War I. Providing insight into family dynamics in the early years, Ansley shows the range of psychological and physical problems that plague both individuals and families across the spectrum. It offers a look at how things and people change and how they react to that change from generation to generation.

Book Synopsis Educating Harlem by : Ansley T. Erickson
Download or read book Educating Harlem written by Ansley T. Erickson and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the twentieth century, education was a key site for envisioning opportunities for African Americans, but the very schools they attended sometimes acted as obstacles to black flourishing. Educating Harlem brings together a multidisciplinary group of scholars to provide a broad consideration of the history of schooling in perhaps the nation’s most iconic black community. The volume traces the varied ways that Harlem residents defined and pursued educational justice for their children and community despite consistent neglect and structural oppression. Contributors investigate the individuals, organizations, and initiatives that fostered educational visions, underscoring their breadth, variety, and persistence. Their essays span the century, from the Great Migration and the Harlem Renaissance through the 1970s fiscal crisis and up to the present. They tell the stories of Harlem residents from a wide variety of social positions and life experiences, from young children to expert researchers to neighborhood mothers and ambitious institution builders who imagined a dynamic array of possibilities from modest improvements to radical reshaping of their schools. Representing many disciplinary perspectives, the chapters examine a range of topics including architecture, literature, film, youth and adult organizing, employment, and city politics. Challenging the conventional rise-and-fall narratives found in many urban histories, the book tells a story of persistent struggle in each phase of the twentieth century. Educating Harlem paints a nuanced portrait of education in a storied community and brings much-needed historical context to one of the most embattled educational spaces today.
