Fortran 2003, the latest standard version of Fortran, has many excellent features that assist the programmer in writing efficient, portable and maintainable programs. This all-inclusive volume offers a reader-friendly, easy-to-follow and informal description of Fortran 2003, and has been developed to provide not only a readable explanation of features, but also some rationale for the inclusion of features and their use. This highly versatile handbook is intended for anyone who wants a comprehensive survey of Fortran 2003.

It is function analysis that has always been the focal pOint. This fact has become particularly obvious in the last few years through the employment of nev short-lived radionuclides, new technical procedures and data processing. The disadvantage of function analysis in Inclear ftedicine through the use of radioactively labeled compounds is that more and more complicated and expensive equipment his to be used. A further characteristic is that these machines are stationary, and that the patients cannot be examined under physiological conditions. For technical reasons the x-camera is developing in the direction of mea suring mainly the so-ca~led 'soft' I-emitters at the present time. On the other hand, positron emitters are the radionuclides which are of interest for metabolic functions. At present, positron cameras are even more e~pensive and complicated machines, the use of which is very demanding. In this book Priv. -Doz. Dr. med. Dipl. -Ing. D. Peter pretschner has described a new system which contains his ideas and his technical developments. He describes a solution to the urgent questions and dif ficulties in the employment of radioactive substances for diagnosis. It does not demand large resources and can be used under the appropri ate individual physiological conditions. Here he was helped by his training as a natural scientist and engineer, as well as by his being an experienced clinician.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive tutorial that relies mainly on a large number of short, but complete programming examples to illustrate the differences between the new language and traditional Fortran. The author gives thorough explanations of terminology and concepts which were not in general use before the release of the new standard. Readers are assumed to have a working knowledge of one of the earlier versions of Fortran, but otherwise no prior knowledge of Fortran 90 is assumed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Guidebook to Fortran on Supercomputers presents in detail both the underlying architecture of supercomputers and the manner by which a compiler maps Fortran code onto that architecture. This book outlines the constructs preventing full optimization and provides specific strategies for restructuring a program. Organized into four chapters, this book begins with an overview of the basic concepts of vector, scalar, and parallel processing. This text then provides an in-depth look at the architectural features of a variety of existing machines, with emphasis to the features common to many of them. Other chapters consider the optimization techniques used by compilers and how a programmer can take advantage of this knowledge in restructuring existing programs and in the development of new applications. The final chapter presents examples of loops from real-world programs, with a discussion of the inherent problems. This book is a valuable resource for scientists, engineers, students, and research workers.

Book excerpt: The Boundary Element Method (BEM) has become established as an effective tool for the solutions of problems in engineering science. The salient features of the BEM have been well documented in the open literature and therefore will not be elaborated here. The BEM research has progressed rapidly, especially in the past decade and continues to evolve worldwide. This Symposium was organized to provide an international forum for presentation of current research in BEM for linear and nonlinear problems in solid and fluid mechanics and related areas. To this end, papers on the following topics were included: rotary wing aerodynamics, unsteady aerodynamics, design and optimization, elasticity, elasto dynamics and elastoplasticity, fracture mechanics, acoustics, diffusion and wave motion, thermal analysis, mathematical aspects and boundary/finite element coupled methods. A special session was devoted to parallel/vector supercomputing with emphasis on mas sive parallelism. This Symposium was sponsored by United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) , NASA Langley Research Center, and the International Association of Boundary Ele ment Methods (lAB EM) . We thank the UTRC management for their permission to host this Symposium. In particular, we thank Dr. Arthur S. Kesten and Mr. Robert E. Olson for their encouragement and support. We gratefully acknowledge the support of Dr. E. Carson Yates, Jr. of NASA Langley, Prof. Luigi Morino, Dr. Thomas A.
