Book excerpt: "The first architect-designed gas station - a Pittsburgh Gulf station in 1913 - was also the first to offer free road maps; the familiar Shell name and logo date from 1907, when a British mother-of-pearl importer expanded its line to include the newly discovered oil of the Dutch East Indies; the first enclosed gas stations were built only after the first enclosed cars made motoring a year-round activity - and operating a service station was no longer a "seasonal" job; the system of "octane" rating was introduced by Sun Oil as a marketing gimmick (74 for premium in 1931)." "As the number of "true" gas stations continues its steady decline - from 239,000 in 1969 to fewer than 100,000 today - the words and images of this book bear witness to an economic and cultural phenomenon that was perhaps more uniquely American than any other of this century."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Step back to the day when a visit to the gas station meant service with a smile, a wash of the windshield, and the cheerful question, "Fill 'er up?" Since their unremarkable beginnings as cheap shacks and curbside pumps at the dawn of the automobile age, gas stations have taken many forms and worn many guises: castles, cottages and teepees, Art Deco and Streamline Moderne, clad with wood, stucco, or gleaming porcelain in seemingly infinite variety. The companion volume to the Wisconsin Public Television documentary of the same name, Fill 'er Up: The Glory Days of Wisconsin Gas Stations visits 60 Wisconsin gas stations that are still standing today and chronicles the history of these humble yet ubiquitous buildings. The book tells the larger story of the gas station's place in automobile culture and its evolution in tandem with American history, as well as the stories of the individuals influenced by the gas stations in their lives. Fill 'er Up provides a glimpse into the glory days of gas stations, when full service and free oil changes were the rule and the local station was a gathering place for neighbors. More importantly, Fill 'er Up links the past and the present, showing why gas stations should be preserved and envisioning what place these historic structures can have in the 21st century and beyond.

Book excerpt: Tiré du site Internet www.buypichler.com: " [...] SIX HANDS AND A CHEESE SANDWICH is a book about books, a catalogue and an art/bookwork in its own right. Content: By now the appropriation and paraphrasing of Ed Ruscha constitutes a genre of its own. The first were 1968 Bruce Nauman with 'Burning Small Fires' and 1971 'Ed Ruscha' (actually Joel Fisher) with 'Six Hands and a Cheese Sandwich', with further appropriations or hommages over the decades, and in the last years it almost became fashionable, the evidence is massive. This little booklet features an extensive bibliography with way more than 100 entries There is actually none of the books published by Ruscha in the 60ies, which has not been paraphrased yet, be it the Gas Stations (e.g. Jeff Brouws, Toby Mussmann, Eric Tabuchi, Michalis Pichler, Anonymus, Michael Maranda), the Fires (e.g. Bruce Nauman, Jonathan Monk, Yann Serandour, Thomas Galler), the Apartments (John O'Brian, Anne-Valerie Gasc, Eric Doehringer), the Parking Lots (Hermann Zschiegner, Travis Shaffer), the Swimming Pools (Jen Denike, Taro Hirano), the Real Estate Opportunities (Adam&Kate Davis, Eric Doehringer), the Royal Road Test (Tom Sachs, Simon Morris, Martha Hlady) or the Sunset Strip (J.F. Schnyder, Jonathan Monk, Derek Sullivan, Tom Sowden), even the Palm Trees (Tadej Pogocar, Eric van der Wejde), Colored People (Jonathan Monk, Tanja Lazetic) and Hard Light (Achim Riechers) have been taken up explicitly. The assembly attempts to span a larger arc of tension, integrate Ruscha's own books and put him into a evolution line in particular with the publications of Hiroshige and Hokusai, whose titles show great parallels in rhythm and use of numeric and vague enumerations. The missing link could be Yoshikazu Suzuki's GINZA HACCHO, buildings on Ginza, Tokyo, published as an accordion foldout book - in 1952, hence preceding Ruscha's Sunset Strip for 13 years- in the same street-view-style which was for very long considered essentially Ruscha."

Book excerpt: The photograph found a home in the book before it won for itself a place on the gallery wall. Only a few years after the birth of photography, the publication of Henry Fox Talbot's "The Pencil of Nature" heralded a new genre in the history of the book, one in which the photograph was the primary vehicle of expression and communication, or stood in equal if sometimes conflicted partnership with the written word. In this book, practicing photographers and writers across several fields of scholarship share a range of fresh approaches to reading the photobook, developing new ways of understanding how meaning is shaped by an image's interaction with its text and context and engaging with the visual, tactile and interactive experience of the photobook in all its dimensions. Through close studies of individual works, the photobook from fetishised objet d'art to cheaply-printed booklet is explored and its unique creative and cultural contributions celebrated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A homage to the 1973 publication of Architecture and Utopia by Manfredo Tafuri—echoed in the title—this book is devoted to the radical experiences of the 1960s and to their consequences for the most recent developments in contemporary architecture. As a response to the profound crisis of Western culture the emerged in the 1960s, radical artists from Italy, Austria, England and Japan called into question the foundations of modernist utopias. They transmuted the difficulties of capitalism into a repertory of startling images that revealed the disturbing realities of consumer society, even in those places still resistant to the penetration of modern architecture, such as Superstudio and Archizoom’s Florence. Their model, though exhausted in the space of experimentation, went on to inspire a generation of architects, from the High Tech movement to Rem Koolhaas, who sought to employ the paradigm of dystopia as both a visionary and a constructive method, one which could operate on the architecture of late capitalism and generate unexpected possibilities for urban planning. In the light of these examples, how to define a unified “dystopian” method of design, i.e. a common ground for an architecture that, by its very nature, seems to resist systematization? Are the most recognizable architectural expressions of this theoretical framework—characterized by brazen displays of technology and structures of overwhelming scale—merely isolated cases, albeit of particular iconic power? Or do they belong to a wider landscape of antirational architectural projects? And to what extent are these disturbing expressions premised on the utopian tradition or, better yet, the conceptual model of “negative thought”? The goal of this book is to respond to such questions, thus initiating an open dialogue about the legitimacy of this critical category. With contributions by Dario Donetti, Marco De Michelis, Oliver Elser, Dominique Rouillard, Marco Biraghi, Marie Theres Stauffer, Maddalena Scimemi, Simon Sadler, Massimiliano Savorra, and Anthony Vidler
