Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the impact of advances in genetics and assisted reproduction technologies on family law, human rights and the rights of the child, including the effects of international treaties on national legislation. It surveys the theoretical, ethical and legal discussions with regard to biotechnology and family law issues and the search for a balance between safeguarding respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms and the need to ensure freedom of research. However, biotechnology impinges not only on isolated individuals and their rights, but also on unborn children, the family as a network of living relationships and the basic structure of any society, as well as the foundation of parentage and kinship, social organization as a whole and, finally, mankind itself. As the attention of the World turns to cloning, this book will contribute to the search for a balance between the rights and freedoms of born and yet to be born human beings and the quest for new technologies.

Book Synopsis Private International Law Aspects of Corporate Social Responsibility by : Catherine Kessedjian
Download or read book Private International Law Aspects of Corporate Social Responsibility written by Catherine Kessedjian and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-06 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses one of the core challenges in the corporate social responsibility (or business and human rights) debate: how to ensure adequate access to remedy for victims of corporate abuses that infringe upon their human rights. However, ensuring access to remedy depends on a series of normative and judicial elements that become highly complex when disputes are transnational. In such cases, courts need to consider and apply different laws that relate to company governance, to determine the competent forum, to define which bodies of law to apply, and to ensure the adequate execution of judgments. The book also discusses how alternative methods of dispute settlement can relate to this topic, and the important role that private international law plays in access to remedy for corporate-related human rights abuses. This collection comprises 20 national reports from jurisdictions in Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia, addressing the private international law aspects of corporate social responsibility. They provide an overview of the legal differences between geographical areas, and offer numerous examples of how states and their courts have resolved disputes involving private international law elements. The book draws two preliminary conclusions: that there is a need for a better understanding of the role that private international law plays in cases involving transnational elements, in order to better design transnational solutions to the issues posed by economic globalisation; and that the treaty negotiations on business and human rights in the United Nations could offer a forum to clarify and unify several of the elements that underpin transnational disputes involving corporate human rights abuses, which could also help to identify and bridge the existing gaps that limit effective access to remedy. Adopting a comparative approach, this book appeals to academics, lawyers, judges and legislators concerned with the issue of access to remedy and reparation for corporate abuses under the prism of private international law.

This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of these stories revolve around the forbidden fruit and the conquering of anothers heart by using a fetish, making him helplessly captivated. There are numerous stories of jealousy, envy, and other natural phenomena. The reader will find some samples of those in this book. Traditionally, a lot of ink, saliva, and even tears have been poured about sex, especially when it is about guilty relations between two lovers, relationships in which at least one of the parties is officially recognized as in a relationship or married to another person. These relationships are commonly and humorously referred to as forbidden fruit by analogy to the legend of the Garden of Eden.
Book Synopsis The Mobile City of Accra by : Elizabeth Ardayfio-Schandorf
Download or read book The Mobile City of Accra written by Elizabeth Ardayfio-Schandorf and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a product of collaborative research between the Institut de recherche pour le dveloppement (IRD, France), the University of Ghana, Legon and CODESRIA. It examines various economic, social and environmental challenges of urbanization that critically affect the capital of Ghana, which has experienced high demographic growth and territorial expansion. The study analyses the Greater Accra city dwellers residential practices, and focuses on two main factors influencing land and rental markets. On the one hand, it interrogates the constraints and dynamics of urban families, their needs and gender characteristics in terms of accommodation. On the other hand, it explores the opportunities and interests in investment on the part of land owners and real estate developers. At these two levels of describing the social and spatial discriminations, the book attempts to explain the difficult choices that this fragmented city faces. It emphasizes the role of mobility in structuring the metropolitan area, and the negative impact of lack of mobility which results in some households and communities suffering more than others. Light is thrown on diagnostics and prospects in the matter of urban planning.
