Book excerpt: When history becomes handmaiden to archaeology. Nick Allemand has almost everything present and correct: a job in archaeology that he loves, acceptable-to-moderate looks, more money than he could ever hope to spend, a bijou house in Grantaford, and friends he can count upon for just about anything. But all that changes when his colleague and fellow archaeologist Ava Galaniou goes missing. Almost immediately, he is under suspicion for her disappearance, and on the run with few of the tools and little of the experience he needs. His search leads him to the tomb of all tombs - the long-lost Tomb of Alexander the Great - source of incredible power across the centuries, and a pyramid scheme with apparently little connection to Egypt. Will Nick adapt in time to survive the tests set by this long-dead ruler? And will he find Ava? It'll take a great deal of shattered light to find out... Book One of The Nick Allemand Series. From the author of The Fireblade Array. For fans of Indiana Jones, Mieville's The City & The City, Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, Tomb Raider and many other Contemporary/Low Fantasy action and adventure stories with mystery, crime and a dash of history.

Book Synopsis Electromagnetic Theory of Gratings by : R. Petit
Download or read book Electromagnetic Theory of Gratings written by R. Petit and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was a student, in the early fifties, the properties of gratings were generally explained according to the scalar theory of optics. The grating formula (which pre dicts the diffraction angles for a given angle of incidence) was established, exper imentally verified, and intensively used as a source for textbook problems. Indeed those grating properties, we can call optical properties, were taught'in a satisfac tory manner and the students were able to clearly understand the diffraction and dispersion of light by gratings. On the other hand, little was said about the "energy properties", i. e. , about the prediction of efficiencies. Of course, the existence of the blaze effect was pointed out, but very frequently nothing else was taught about the efficiency curves. At most a good student had to know that, for an eche lette grating, the efficiency in a given order can approach unity insofar as the diffracted wave vector can be deduced from the incident one by a specular reflexion on the large facet. Actually this rule of thumb was generally sufficient to make good use of the optical gratings available about thirty years ago. Thanks to the spectacular improvements in grating manufacture after the end of the second world war, it became possible to obtain very good gratings with more and more lines per mm. Nowadays, in gratings used in the visible region, a spacing small er than half a micron is common.
Book Synopsis Anomalies by : Christopher Allen Guidry
Download or read book Anomalies written by Christopher Allen Guidry and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the century, strangely gifted humans encounter unbelievable experiences and a scientist begins building an army of cybernetic organisms as the foundation of his planned empire. In a world exactly like ours, a species of extraordinary humans exists. They are called Anomalies; they evolved from Gods and possess amazing gifts. For countless millennia, Anomalies and Gods have lived peacefully alongside humans. But as the twentieth century arrives, all of that is about to change. At the turn of the century, some Anomalies have grown tired of hiding in the shadows; in response, the government, armed with knowledge of the other species, creates organizations to deal with terroristic threats the Anomalies pose. Several decades later, Russian scientist Dimitri Gustav, building on Hitler's ideas, begins a campaign of world domination through science and technology. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, he has created numerous cybernetic organisms and genetically engineered creatures. He begins to form his own army, intent on building an empire. Now, as a series of events begins to unravel, new enemies arise, threatening the anonymity and balance of society the government has accomplished and possibly preparing to cause a revelation and expose a secret that has been so desperately hidden.

Book Synopsis Marvel Comics into Film by : Matthew J. McEniry
Download or read book Marvel Comics into Film written by Matthew J. McEniry and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-04-13 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marvel Studios' approach to its Cinematic Universe--beginning with the release of Iron Man (2008)--has become the template for successful management of blockbuster film properties. Yet films featuring Marvel characters can be traced back to the 1940s, when the Captain America serial first appeared on the screen. This collection of new essays is the first to explore the historical, textual and cultural context of the larger cinematic Marvel universe, including serials, animated films, television movies, non-U.S. versions of Marvel characters, films that feature characters licensed by Marvel, and the contemporary Cinematic Universe as conceived by Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios. Films analyzed include Transformers (1986), Howard the Duck (1986), Blade (1998), Planet Hulk (2010), Iron Man: Rise of Technovore (2013), Elektra (2005), the Conan the Barbarian franchise (1982-1990), Ultimate Avengers (2006) and Ghost Rider (2007).
Download or read book Anomalies written by Vivien Dean and published by JMS Books LLC. This book was released on 2022-05-14 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the planet of Kathtor, Midnight Creek is special. It houses a geo-spatial anomaly that crosses the distance between opposite sides of the planet with a single step. A hundred years ago, the warring Kimon used the anomaly to invade the peaceful Therlerians, only to be driven away by their advanced technology. Now, a single man guards the point of entry. Warden Arie Vedebel is the best of his kind, a soldier in the Liberated Therler Federacy, determined to defend his people to the death. When an electrical storm sets the creek on fire, he races to put it out, only to discover a man in the midst of it. His name? General Dennick Ginn of the Elds Regime, highly decorated Kimon officer. Arie’s orders are to kill on sight, but Dennick’s claims that’s he come through the anomaly to destroy it make him pause. As far as Arie knows, that’s impossible. Then again, he’d always been told his post was a precautionary one, that traveling through the anomaly was no longer viable. Arie and Dennick form a wary alliance. While Arie strives to find the truth, the one fact he can’t dispute is that Dennick is not what he expects a Kimon to be. The two men have more in common than military training. They just might have a future, too.
Book Synopsis Applied Photometry, Radiometry, and Measurements of Optical Losses by : Michael Bukshtab
Download or read book Applied Photometry, Radiometry, and Measurements of Optical Losses written by Michael Bukshtab and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-03 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Photometry, Radiometry, and Measurements of Optical Losses reviews and analyzes physical concepts of radiation transfer, providing quantitative foundation for the means of measurements of optical losses, which affect propagation and distribution of light waves in various media and in diverse optical systems and components. The comprehensive analysis of advanced methodologies for low-loss detection is outlined in comparison with the classic photometric and radiometric observations, having a broad range of techniques examined and summarized: from interferometric and calorimetric, resonator and polarization, phase-shift and ring-down decay, wavelength and frequency modulation to pulse separation and resonant, acousto-optic and emissive - subsequently compared to direct and balancing methods for studying free-space and polarization optics, fibers and waveguides. The material is focused on applying optical methods and procedures for evaluation of transparent, reflecting, scattering, absorbing, and aggregated objects, and for determination of power and energy parameters of radiation and color properties of light.
