Book Synopsis Biochemistry of Plant Secondary Metabolism by : Michael Wink
Download or read book Biochemistry of Plant Secondary Metabolism written by Michael Wink and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-09-21 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The secondary metabolites of plants were once considered to be waste products - today, their true value is understood. New methods of separation and structural elucidation, and advances in the investigation of biochemical activities, have increased our understanding of secondary metabolites. Their function as a defense mechanisms offers a great potential for technological gain. Secondary metabolites can be utilized in agriculture to breed stronger crops and in the manufacture of biorational pesticides. They can also be exploited by medicine as theraputic agents. And these are just two of the likely uses. This landmark volume presents articles by an impressive team of experts from leading laboratories. Each chapter considers a current understanding of secondary metabolites in nature and the potential exploitation of those qualities by the biotechnology industry.
Book Synopsis Annual Plant Reviews, Insect-Plant Interactions by : Claudia Voelckel
Download or read book Annual Plant Reviews, Insect-Plant Interactions written by Claudia Voelckel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-05-02 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This latest volume in Wiley Blackwell’s prestigious Annual Plant Reviews brings together articles that describe the biochemical, genetic, and ecological aspects of plant interactions with insect herbivores.. The biochemistry section of this outstanding volume includes reviews highlighting significant findings in the area of plant signalling cascades, recognition of herbivore-associated molecular patterns, sequestration of plant defensive metabolites and perception of plant semiochemicals by insects. Chapters in the genetics section are focused on genetic mapping of herbivore resistance traits and the analysis of transcriptional responses in both plants and insects. The ecology section includes chapters that describe plant-insect interactions at a higher level, including multitrophic interactions, investigations of the cost-benefit paradigm and the altitudinal niche-breadth hypothesis, and a re-evaluation of co-evolution in the light of recent molecular research. Written by many of the world’s leading researchers in these subjects, and edited by Claudia Voelckel and Georg Jander, this volume is designed for students and researchers with some background in plant molecular biology or ecology, who would like to learn more about recent advances or obtain a more in-depth understanding of this field. This volume will also be of great use and interest to a wide range of plant scientists and entomologists and is an essential purchase for universities and research establishments where biological sciences are studied and taught. Book Synopsis A Guidebook to Biochemistry by : Michael Yudkin
Download or read book A Guidebook to Biochemistry written by Michael Yudkin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1980-09-25 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a completely revised and expanded edition of the Guidebook to Biochemistry. Every chapter has been reviewed and brought up to date. A new chapter, on the cell and membrane transport, has been included, and the single chapter on regulation in the previous edition has been greatly enlarged and divided into two chapters. Other topics that have received particular attention in this edition include lipids, cell membranes and the biochemical action of hormones. The chapter on genetics has been revised to take account of recent studies of the genetic organization of higher organisms, and a section on genetic engineering has been included. In making these changes the authors have taken care to adhere to the concept of the 'Guidebook' introduced by Kenneth Harrison and maintained by them in the 1971 edition: to 'introduce the reader to the important features of the subject by exemplifying and discussing crucial biochemical concepts'. For this reason they have been careful to restrict the increase in the total length of the book compared with the 1971 edition.

Book Synopsis Transforming Glycoscience by : National Research Council
Download or read book Transforming Glycoscience written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-10-23 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new focus on glycoscience, a field that explores the structures and functions of sugars, promises great advances in areas as diverse as medicine, energy generation, and materials science, this report finds. Glycans-also known as carbohydrates, saccharides, or simply as sugars-play central roles in many biological processes and have properties useful in an array of applications. However, glycans have received little attention from the research community due to a lack of tools to probe their often complex structures and properties. Transforming Glycoscience: A Roadmap for the Future presents a roadmap for transforming glycoscience from a field dominated by specialists to a widely studied and integrated discipline, which could lead to a more complete understanding of glycans and help solve key challenges in diverse fields.

Book Synopsis Protein Sequence Determination by : Saul B. Needleman
Download or read book Protein Sequence Determination written by Saul B. Needleman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "All the King's horses and all the King's mm couldn't put Humpty Dumpty together again." It is entirely possible that the difficulty facing "all the King's men" was principally the lack of a sufficient guide to the techniques of reassembling from a series of small components, the original entity. It is the sincere hope of the editor of the present work and of each of the contributing authors that the modern researcher will not face a similar predicament in his endeavours to reconstruct the complete primary sequence of a protein from the array of component amino acids. Rather, it is the intent that, with this volume, he may proceed untimorously if not with outright confidence toward achieving his purpose. To the newcomer in protein sequencing, compelled by necessity, or fascination, to investigate the exact order of amino acids in proteins, the question of "where to begin" - or "how to do it" is urgent. To those more skilled, a ready source of additional techniques should nevertheless be of value. This volume attempts to present in a single source a discussion of the methods and techniques useful to the determination of the primary structures of proteins and peptides. Hopefully, this book will tell the reader "how to do it".
