Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To scholars in the field, the need for an up-to-date overview of the art of South Asia has been apparent for decades. Although many regional and dynastic genres of Indic art are fairly well understood, the broad, overall representation of India's centuries of splendor has been lacking. The Art of Ancient India is the result of the author's aim to provide such a synthesis. Noted expert Sherman E. Lee has commented: –Not since Coomaraswamyês History of Indian and Indonesian Art (1927) has there been a survey of such completeness.” Indeed, this work restudies and reevaluates every frontier of ancient Indic art _ from its prehistoric roots up to the period of Muslim rule, from the Himalayan north to the tropical south, and from the earliest extant writing through the most modern scholarship on the subject. This dynamic survey-generously complemented with 775 illustrations, including 48 in full color and numerous architectural ground plans, and detailed maps and fine drawings, and further enhanced by its guide to Sanskrit, copious notes, extensive bibliography, and glossary of South Asian art terms-is the most comprehensive and most fully illustrated study of South Asian art available. The works and monuments included in this volume have been selected not only for their artistic merit but also in order to both provide general coverage and include transitional works that furnish the key to an all encompassing view of the art. An outstanding portrayal of ancient Indiaês highest intellectual and technical achievements, this volume is written for many audiences: scholars, for whom it provides an up-to-date background against which to examine their own areas of study; teachers and students of college level, for whom it supplies a complete summary of and a resource for their own deeper investigations into Indic art; and curious readers, for whom it gives a broad-based introduction to this fascinating area of world art.

Book excerpt: Inscriptions suggest that Kapardi I, the founder of the Shilahara dynasty of Thane emerged in the early 9th CE as the feudal lord of the Rashtrakuta King Govinda III. They have left several epigraphical footprints in the form of Copper Plate and Stone Inscriptions in North Konkan. Rupali Mokashi has presented an extensive and holistic study of the Shilaharas of Thane as gleaned through recently discovered epigraphical sources. These inscriptions have unveiled new rulers like Mahakumara Keshideva. A revised chronology with the help of six new Copper Plate and Stone inscriptions of the Shilahara dynasty will be the highlight of this work. Kings Jhanjha and Jaitugi are explored by her in the light of epigraphical data. Epigraphical references of coalescence of scribal class into a caste, Kumarisahasadanda, resettlement of the learned Brahmanas of Karad to North Konkan offer an insight into the society of early medieval North Konkan. A critique is done of Brahmanical, Buddhist and Jain sacred sites of North Konkan as gleaned through the inscriptions. Rise of Chalukya King Kedaradeva vividly explains the emergence of contemporary power centres on the eve of decline of the Shilaharas in South Konkan. The transfer of power from the decline of Satavahanas to the rise of the Shilaharas of Thane, as well as from the decline of Shilaharas till the firm footing of the Portuguese in North Konkan is traversed with the help of epigraphical footprints.

Book excerpt: The Kakatiya kings had ruled the Telugu speaking regions from Warangal as their capital during the period from 1000AD to 1323 AD. During the rule of Ganapathi Deva (1199-1262 AD), Rudrama Devi (1262-1289) and Prathapa Rudra (1289-1323AD), theKakatiya Kingdom emerged as a powerful state and there was all-round development. The rulers and their subordinates had constructed several large irrigational tanks and promoted agriculture. The tanks are still existing in and around Warangal region and providing water to the people for drinking and also for agriculture. There was a brisk internal and foreign trade which led to economic development in the kingdom. The writings of the foreign travellers like Marco Polo (Venice, Italy) are testimony to the prosperity and glory of the Kakatiya Kingdom. The Kakatiya Rulers had patronised scholars and artists and promoted literature and fine arts like music, dance, sculpture art and architecture. Vidyanada, the court poet of PratapaRudra had written Prataparudrayeshobushanam in Sanskrit language. VinukondaVallbamatya had written Kreedabhiramamin Telugu, Palkuriki Somanadha had written Panditaradya Charitra, Kolanuganapathi Deva had written Shivayoga Saramu, Kakatiya Rudra Deva had written Neetisaramu, Baddena’s Neetisara Mukthavali , Jayapa Senani’s Nritya Ratnavali in Sanskrit are very popular writings. The Kakatiya Rulers had constructed several temples and forts etc. The Warangal fort is very famous for its strength, art and architecture during the medieval times. The Temples of Palampeta, Jakaram, Ramanujapuram, Pillalamarri, Nagulapadu, Kusumanchi and several other places are known for their beautiful art, architecture and sculpture. The Ramappa Temple, Thousand Pillar Temple, Swayambhu Temple, Ganapeswara Temple of Kusumanchi, Ghanapur group of Temples of Mulugu region are well known. The sculpture art and architecture of these temples reflect the life and culture, art, crafts, costumes, sports, music and dance forms of their times and are inspiring the present generation. There are several aspects of Bio-Diversity reflected on the temple walls. There are several figures of lions, elephants, wild boars, cow and calf, swans, lotus flowers, creepers, snakes, birds, human figures both male and female etc, on the walls and pillars of the temple complex. They reflect the Bio- Diversity of those times and also the relation of man with the nature. This book is based on my research work under the Ph.D programme. I have undertaken field work and visited all the temples built by the Kakatiyas in the Telangana region. As part of the study, I consulted several Archaeologists, Historians, Writers, who worked on the Kakatiya Temples and Culture. I have also interacted with the local people, who have been living in the surroundings of the temples. I have also collected necessary data from various libraries like Kakatiya University Library, Central Library in Warangal and also Osmania University Library, Abzal Gunz Library, City Library, Srikrishna Devaraya Andhra Bhasha Nilayam, Hyderabad. I would like to acknowledge my debt to my parents Smt. Prameela and Sri Sambaiah (late), who have brought me up to this stage with utmost care and love. It builds on maritime historian Michael Naylor Pearson’s works, his unorthodox approach and strong influence on the study of the Indian Ocean in viewing the oceanic space as replete with human experiences and not as an artefact of empire or as the theatre of European commercial and imperial transits focused only on trade. This interdisciplinary volume presents several ways of writing the history of the Indian Ocean. The chapters explore the changing nature of Indian Ocean history through diverse themes, including state and capital, regional identities, maritime networking, South Asian immigrants, Bay of Bengal linkages, the East India Company, Indian seamen, formal and informal collaboration in imperial networking, scientific transfers, pearling, the issues of colonial copyright, customs, excise and port cities. The volume will be useful to scholars and researchers of global history, modern history, maritime history, medieval history, Indian history, colonial history and world history.
