Book excerpt: Excerpt from Enlarging Scope of the Screen: Annual Report to the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, Inc;; March 27, 1939 Interesting to note is the' fact that of the 434 campaigns ih cluding advertisements, publicity stories, newspaper art, lobby displays, outdoor posters and exploitation ideas submitted to the Advertising Code Administration, 62 of such campaigns were those of companies not members of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America. Deletions and changes were ordered and made while press books were in proof form and no press book had to be rejected after completion. Thus the effectiveness of self-regulation saved much time and expense. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Survey of Progress and Trends in the New Era of Motion Picture Entertainment: Annual Report to the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, Inc., March 30, 1936 While the industry on its own behalf must continue to talk with pictures, not words, the record of critical and public opinion with regard to current motion pictures should greatly encourage those who see even larger prospects ahead. Conclusions reached by competent critics and by commentators of the leading organs of the press in all parts of the country are to the effect that there is more intellectual distinction in the movies than ever before that the screen has trans lated into celluloid drama the greatest number of established classics in the history of motion pictures; that the new productions haveexceeded optimistic hopes that pictures of historical on the increase; that the screen has shown its ability to portray the highest concepts of the human mind; that pictures are finer, more interesting, more entertaining and more educational than ever before; that honest and compelling themes are predominating in the outstanding pictures; that more meaning and dignity has been lent to the screen and that the industry is perform ing a great experiment that will help to determine whether the screen is the universal entertainment medium for the expression of the highest forms of art and drama. Such tributes to the progress of the art are perhaps all the more striking because of the fact that the period under review marked only the ninth anniversary of the first talking motion picture. Sound was a revolutionary development which gave birth practically to a new art form, made necessary the development of new techniques of produc tion, the finding and training of many new artists, the creation or discovery of new source material, the need of great new investments for technical facilities, and the creation of self-regulatory measures to cope with the new problems which the addition of speech to motion brought to the social aspects of motion picture entertainment. Book excerpt: In Reforming Hollywood, William Romanowski tells the long and complex story of the relationship between Protestants of all stripes--from Episcopalians to evangelicals--and the American film industry. Drawing on personal interviews and previously unexamined primary sources, he chronicles Protestant efforts to exert influence on the industry and use movies to promote the moral health of the nation. At the same time, Romanowski shows, mainline Protestants were surprisingly averse to censorship, which they saw as intruding upon individual conscience and antithetical to American democracy--of which they saw themselves as the guardians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical Hollywood, American Modernism charts the entwined trajectories of the Hollywood studio system and literary modernism in the United States. By examining the various ways Hollywood's industry practices inflected the imaginations of authors, filmmakers, and studios, Jordan Brower offers a new understanding of twentieth-century American and ultimately world media culture. Synthesizing archival research with innovative theoretical approaches, this book tells the story of the studio system's genesis, international dominance, decline, and continued symbolic relevance during the American postwar era through the literature it influenced. It examines the American film industry's business practices and social conditions, demonstrating how concepts like anticipated adaptation, corporate authorship, systemic development, and global distribution inflected the form of some of the greatest works of prose fiction and nonfiction by modernist writers, such as Anita Loos, F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, Patsy Ruth Miller, Nathanael West, Parker Tyler, Malcolm Lowry, and James Baldwin.
