Book excerpt: Lessons can be learnt from the past; from time to time it is useful for practitioners to look back over the historical developments of their science. Hydrogeology has developed from humble beginnings into the broad church of investigatory procedures which collectively form the modern-day hydrogeologist‘s tool box. Hydrogeology remains a branch of t

This book was released on 2023-03-09 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of today’s major geoscientific controversies centres on the origin of the Archean granite‒greenstone terranes. Is the geology of these scattered remnants of our planet’s early crust consistent with the theory that modern-style plate-tectonic processes operated from the early Archean, or does it indicate that tectonic and magmatic processes were different in the Archean? Earth has clearly evolved since its initial formation, so at what stage did its processes of crustal growth first resemble those of today? The logical place to seek answers to these intriguing and important questions is within the best-preserved early Archean crust. The Pilbara region of northwest Australia is internationally famous for its abundant and exceptionally well-preserved fossil evidence of early life. However, until recently the area has received much less recognition for the key evidence it provides on early Archean crustal evolution. This book presents and interprets this evidence through a new stage-by-stage account of the development of the Pilbara’s geological record between 3.53 and 2.63 Ga. The Archean Pilbara crust represents one fragment of Earth’s oldest known supercontinent Vaalbara, which also included the Kaapvaal Craton of southern Africa. Recognition of Vaalbara expands the background database for both these areas, allowing us to more fully understand each of them.

Book Synopsis Dynamics of Comets and Asteroids and Their Role in Earth History by : Shin Yabushita
Download or read book Dynamics of Comets and Asteroids and Their Role in Earth History written by Shin Yabushita and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade of this century has seen a renewed interest in the dynamics and physics of the small bodies of the Solar System, Asteroids, Comets and Meteors. New observational evidences such as the discovery of the Edgeworth-Kuiper belt, refined numerical tools such as the symplectic integrators, analytical tools such as semi-numerical perturbation algorithms and in general a better understanding of the dynamics of Hamiltonian systems, all these factors have converged to make possible and worthwhile the study, over very long time spans, of these "minor" objects. Also the public, the media and even some political assell}blies have become aware that these "minor" objects of our planetary environnement could become deadly weapons. Apparently they did have a role in Earth history and a role more ominous than "predicting" defeat (or victory, why not?) to batches of credulous rulers. Remembering what may have happened to the dinosaurs but keeping all the discretion necessary to avoid creating irrational scares, it may not be unwise or irrelevant to improve our knowledge of the physics and dynamics of these objects and to study in particular their interactions with our planet.

Book excerpt: "Western Australia is endowed with an abundance of mineral and petroleum resources, and mining has played a central role in the State's economic, social and political life. A century after the celebrated 1890s goldrushes, his vital industry returns to the State many hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue annually." "A Rich Endowment: Government and Mining in Western Australia 1829-1994 examines the role of Western Australian governments in encouraging, regulating and administering the industry, outlining the development of mining law and the elaboration of services to prospectors and miners." "From a thoroughly researched account of early mineral discoveries, Ken Spillman focuses on the work of the Department of Mines - including functions as diverse as operating state batteries, monitoring dust levels in mines, controlling goldfields water supplies, administering the WA School of Mines, and even managing a government-owned hotel." "Ken Spillman brings to life the remarkable men of science who served as Government Geologists, the powerful goldfields wardens, and a range of other characters - including a gentlemanly clerk who once roamed as the murderous Captain Starlight." "Commissioned by the Department of Minerals and Energy to celebrate its 1994 centenary, A Rich Endowment offers new insight into many facets of Western Australia's past."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Each report begins with an overview of the region's mineral industries during the year. It continues with individual country chapters that examine the mining, refining, processing, and use of minerals in each country of the region and how each country's mineral industry relates to U.S. industry. Most chapters include production tables and industry structure tables, information about Government policies and programs that affect the country's mineral industry, and an outlook section.
