Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the President and Treasurer, 1909 To the Board of Trustees of Wellesley College: - In presenting my eleventh annual report to the Board of Trustees I must gratefully acknowledge their kindness in granting me a leave of absence, which became necessary owing to severe illness in the spring of 1908. As the autumn approached, it seemed evident that it would be unwise for me to undertake a winter at Wellesley, and I must thank the Trustees for the cordial way in which they granted me a year's vacation. Happily, it was not necessary to avail myself of the whole of it, and I returned to college by the middle of May. As Commencement Day this year did not come until June 29th, I thus had more than six weeks of the very busiest of the college life. I must first of all express my warm appreciation of the able manner in which affairs had been conducted during my absence by the Dean and by the administrative officers associated with her. With the increasing number of students, the work of the Dean's office becomes more and more onerous, the entering class of 1908 numbering 414. The admission of so large a number involves an enormous amount of detail work, and the Dean's office force has had to be increased. These students have come to us very largely on certificate, and from all parts of the country. The various departments for taking care of the new students are now so well organized that the opening days move very smoothly; but it remains true that there is a great deal of work for the officers of administration to perform. This is not only on the strictly academic side, but in the housing of new students, making sure not only that college dormitories but the private houses in the village are in readiness for them. No member shall speak to a motion until it has been delivered to the Chairman in writing, with the names of the mover and seconder thereon. The mover shall then have the first, and the seconder the second right of speaking to such motion. 5. No amendment to a motion can be received after an amendment to an amendment, nor any motion unless for the previous question, to lay on the table, or to adjourn simply. 6. A motion to adjourn simply shall take precedence of all motions and amendments; a motion to lay on the table of all except to adjourn; a motion for the previous question of all except to adjourn or to lay on the table. 7. The yeas and nays upon any question shall be recorded on the minutes, when called for by five members. 8. When a member intends to speak or submit a motion, he shall rise in his place, and respectfully addressing the chair, confine himself to the question, and avoid personalities; and any member once reprimanded for the indulgence of improper language and persevering in it, shall be liable to public censure or expulsion, as the Association may determine. 9. Should more than one member rise to speak at the same time, the Chairman shall at once, and without appeal, determine who is entitled to the floor. 10. Members shall speak but once on any question, including amendments, without the consent of the Association. 11. The previous question shall be put in this form - "Shall the question be put now?" If this be carried, no further motions, amendments, or debate shall be permitted, but the question put without delay. 12. The following questions shall not be debateable - 1st. To adjourn simply. 2nd. To lay on the table. 3rd. The previous question. 13. No amendment to the minutes shall be allowed after their adoption; and no resolution to expunge any part of them shall have any other effect than the erasure of the record, nor shall any motion to expunge be in order until after a motion for their adoption. 14. A motion to adjourn simply shall always be in order, except 1st. when a member is in possession of the floor; 2nd. when members are voting; 3rd. when an adjournment was the last preceding motion; 4th. when it has been decided that the previous question shall be put. 15. A rule may be suspended at any meeting of the Association, by a two-thirds vote. 10. These Rules of Order shall also, as far as possible, apply in Committee of the whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Connecticut Pomological Society: For the Year 1908, With Proceedings of the Eighteenth Annual Meeting, 1909 Article I - The name of this association shall be The Connecticut Pomological Society. Article II - Its object shall be the advancement of the science and art of pomology, and the mutual improvement and business advantage of its members. Article III - Any person may become a member of this Society by paying into the treasury the sum of one dollar, and the membership shall cease at the end of the current year. Any person may become a life member of this Society by the payment of the sum of ten dollars at one time. All moneys from life memberships to form a permanent investment fund of the Society. Article IV - Its officers shall consist of a President. First Vice-President, one Vice-President from each county in the State, a Secretary and a Treasurer, to be elected annually by ballot, to hold office for one year, or until their successors are duly elected. The President. First Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer shall constitute the Executive Committee of the Society. Article V - The Society shall hold its annual meeting during the month of February, the time and place to be decided by the Executive Committee, at which time the annual election of officers shall be held, various reports submitted and an exhibition and discussion of fruits take place; also other necessary business be transacted. Other meetings for special purposes may be arranged for and called by the Executive Committee whenever it is deemed advisable. Printed notice of each meeting to be sent to every member of this society. Article VI - The following Standing Committees of three members each, on the following subjects, shall be appointed by the President, to hold during his term of office; the appointments to be announced at the annual meeting of the society. Business and Legislation, Fungous Diseases, Injurious Insects, New Fruits, Exhibitions, Markets and Transportation, Membership, Two Auditors. Article VII - This Constitution may be amended by a vote of twothirds of the members present at any annual meeting. By-Laws. Article I - The President, Secretary, Treasurer and the Chairman of each standing committee shall each present a report at the annual meeting of the Society. Article II - The President shall appoint annually two members to audit the accounts of the Secretary and Treasurer. Article III - The Treasurer shall pay out no money except on the written order of the President, countersigned by the Secretary.
