Book Synopsis New Industries from New Places by : Neil Gregory
Download or read book New Industries from New Places written by Neil Gregory and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009-03-19 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Software comes from India, hardware comes from China. Why is that? Why did China and India take such different paths to global dominance in new high-tech industries? Will their paths continue to diverge or converge? How can other countries learn from their successes--and failures--in reaching global scale in new industries? To answer these questions, this book presents the first rigorous comparison of the growth of the IT industries in China and India, based on interviews with over 300 companies. It explains the different growth paths of the software and hardware sectors in each country, providing insights into the factors behind the emergence of China and India as global economic powers. It provides a compelling case study of how differences in economic policies and the investment climate affect industrial growth. This book sheds new light on common debates on 'China versus India', on why India is the software capital of the world while China is a manufacturing powerhouse. It refutes common myths about the growth of these industries for example, the role of Non-Resident Indians or the Y2K problem in the growth of the Indian software industry, the role of government intervention in industrial growth, and the relative size of China and India's software industries.

Book Synopsis INDIAN STOCK MARKET AND INSTITUTIONAL INVESTMENTS by : Dr. Sridhar Ryakala

This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global integration, the widening and intensifying of links between high-income and developing countries has accelerated over the years. Over the past few years, the financial markets have become increasingly global. The Indian market has gained from foreign inflows through the investment of Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs). Following the implementation of reforms in the securities industry in the past few years, Indian stock markets have stood out in the world ranking. During the past few years India has emerged as one of the world’s fastest growing economies. The increasing interest of foreign players in the domestic broking industry is a testimony of the stock market’s growth. The Indian stock market has also received a thrust from rise in business transactions over the years, because of sharp drop in brokerage fees and transaction costs, launch of a slew of new products, and a robust regulatory environment. The importance of institutional investors’ particularly foreign investors is very much evident as one of the routine reasons offered by market analysts’ whenever the market rises, it is attributed to foreign investors' money and no wonder we see headlines like "FIIs Fuel Rally" etc., in the business press. This is not unusual with India alone as today’s most developed economies might have seen a similar trend in the past. Domestic institutional investors on the other hand being another important section of institutional investors are playing a vital role in the Indian stock market. These investors have emerged as important players in the Indian stock market and their activities are influencing the market. There are many instances where this section of investors has stabilized the market conditions on one hand whereas their moves took the market to destabilized position on the other hand. Therefore, both FIIs and DIIs have become the most important determinants in the functioning of the Indian stock market. Thus, increasing role of these institutional investors has brought both quantitative and qualitative developments in the stock market viz., expansion of securities business, increased depth and breadth of the market, and above all their dominant investment philosophy of emphasizing the fundamentals has rendered efficient pricing of the stocks. Hence, there is a need to examine how investments made by these two groups of institutional investors’ impact each other as well as stock market returns. This book is an attempt in that direction.

Book Synopsis Foreign and Commonwealth Office Annual Report 2007-08 by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Foreign Affairs Committee
Download or read book Foreign and Commonwealth Office Annual Report 2007-08 written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Foreign Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the Committee's annual review of how the FCO is managing its resources, examining the departmental annual report for 2007-08 (Cm. 7398, ISBN 9780101739825). Chapters cover: new strategic framework; performance measurement; global network; essential services; FCO Services; personnel issues; transparency and openness; financial management; public diplomacy and communication; the British Council; the BBC World Service. The Committee is concerned that the FCO is facing serious financial pressures in this financial year due to the Treasury's withdrawal of its support for the Overseas Pricing Mechanism (OPM) which used to protect departments from the weakening of sterling. There is a risk that the FCO may not be able to meet higher international subscriptions over the next two financial years, causing its performance against Public Service Agreement targets to suffer. The likely increase in the UN Regular Budget and other international subscriptions will push this figure even higher. The FCO should have to shoulder the financial burden from within its already tight budget to pay for subscriptions which also benefit other Government departments. The Committee recommends that additional nondiscretionary costs should properly be met by the Treasury.
Book Synopsis Matching Visibility and Performance by : Nian Cai Liu
Download or read book Matching Visibility and Performance written by Nian Cai Liu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The concept of world-class universities (WCU) has increasingly gained popularity in the past two decades around the world. WCU are regarded as cornerstone institutions of any academic system and imperative to develop a nation’s competitiveness in the global knowledge economy. The development of such universities is high on the policy agenda of various stakeholders worldwide, in both developed and developing countries and regions, and at both national and institutional levels, to promote their global competitiveness.Visibility and performance are among the most watched concepts in relation to develop WCUs, but remain complicated in nature and with no agreed upon definitions. Existing literature have focused on how to raise universities’ prestige, status, impact and rankings in the global and regional arena on the one hand, and how to enhance universities’ quality, efficiency, effectiveness and academic output on the other. However, whether visibility is a legitimate indicator of performance, or vice versa, is yet to be answered.Matching Visibility and Performance: A Standing Challenge for World-Class Universities provides insights of developing academic excellence from global, national and institutional perspectives, and intends to stimulate discussion on how universities can be ‘globally visible and locally engaged’ and how visibility and performance can be integrated and balanced in practice."
