Book Synopsis Christianity and History by : Elmore Harris Harbison
Download or read book Christianity and History written by Elmore Harris Harbison and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Part I of Christianity and History, the author asks whether the committed Christian should be more conscious than the uncommitted of some meaning in history. In answering this he offers a critique of Arnold Toynbee and makes some penetrating observations on the teaching of history. Part II is concerned with the author's special field-the Protestant Reformation and its origins. Calvinism, with its dynamic sense of the historical process, receives special treatment, and there is a brilliant essay on Machiavelli and Thomas More. Three of the essays included in this new book appear here for the first time. Originally published in 1964. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book Synopsis Shapes of Philosophical History by : Frank Edward Manuel
Download or read book Shapes of Philosophical History written by Frank Edward Manuel and published by Ashgate Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these seven lectures, the author looks at the ways in which philosophical historians over the last 2000 years have looked at the nature of man and the shape of human history. He identifies two modes of historical perception, the cyclical and progressive: on the one hand the historical world seen as movement either to a fixed end, or to an indefinite end that defines itself in the course of progression, history as novelty-creating and always variant; on the other hand circularity, eternal recurrence, return to the beginning of things, sheer reiteration or similar recapitulation..... By tracing the development of these two shapes of philosophical history from the onset of the Christian era through to the present, the author argues, they reveal themselves to be less a logical than a psychological polarity. In some periods there may be a weightier commitment to one or the other, but neither has dominated the European intellectual field without the presence in some form of its rival.

Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies and published by Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies. This book was released on 2003 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth century witnessed rapid economic and social developments, profound political and intellectual upheaval, and startling innovations in art and literature. As Europeans peered into an uncertain future, they drew upon the Renaissance for meaning, precedents, and identity. Many claimed to find inspiration or models in the Renaissance, but as we move across the continent's borders and through the century's decades, we find that the Renaissance was many different things to many different people. This collection brings together the work of sixteen authors who examine the many Renaissances conceived by European novelists and poets, artists and composers, architects and city planners, political theorists and politicians, businessmen and advertisers. The essays fall into three groups: "Aesthetic Recoveries of Strategic Pasts"; "The Renaissance in Nineteenth-Century Culture Wars"; and "Material Culture and Manufactured Memories."
