Kober, Dean of the Medical faculty, Georgetown University, reached the age of 70 years on March 28, 1920. That the day might not pass without some slight testimonial of the admiration and esteem in which he is held by pupils, friends and co-workers in the many fields of his activities, a number of Dr. Kober's associates met on October 24, 1919, and decided to issue an anniversary publi cation, dedicated to him. This Organization Committee consisted of Dr. George Tully Vaughan, Chairman; Mr. Felix Neumann, Secretary; Mr. John Joy Edson, Treasurer; and General Robert E. Noble, Dr. Charles D. Walcott, Dr. W. M. Barton, Dr. J. W. Fewkes, Prof. W. H. Holmes, Dr. Walter Hough, Dr. L. O. Howard, Dr. A. Hrdlicka, Mr. Neil M. Judd and Dr. Truman Michelson. Owing to the shortness of the intervening period and to uncertain ties Of publication, it was considelred advisable to accept the offer of Dr. Ales Hrdlicka, editor of the American Journal of Physical Anthro pology, and issue the first quarterly of that Journal for 1920, as the George M. Kober Anniversary Number. Dr. Kober has been an associate editor of the Journal since its inception. Although Dr. Kober's scientific interests include such divergent subjects as Military Medicine, Occupational and Social Diseases, Hygiene, Tuberculosis, Social Welfare, and Physical Anthropology, the specific character of the American Journal of Physical Anthropology limited contributions to those bearing directly upon the latter title. Book excerpt: The story of Ostrava and its Jews encapsulates in a small space (85 square miles) and a short time (ca. 150 years) a miniaturized history of Central Europe. It covers industrialization and massive economic growth, immigration and emigration, intolerance and tolerance, multi-culturalism and nationalism, high culture and social welfare, the Holocaust, communism and the diaspora. The book draws on family histories and eye-witness accounts, many unpublished. In 2005 members of Kingston Synagogue became interested in the origins of a Sefer Torah from Ostrava, housed there many years earlier. This research project, led initially by David Lawson, grew to include the Czech historian Hana Sustkova and Czech genealogist Libuse Salomonovicova. As their research progressed, a lively online community developed, reestablishing contacts between families from Sweden to Australia, and South America to Canada. In effect, resurrecting Jewish Ostrava in virtual and actual reality. The overarching theme is how, in a short time, immigrants-in this case Jews-transformed a small conservative market town into a vibrant, tolerant, caring, economic, and cultural powerhouse; how it was destroyed almost overnight by bigotry and intolerance; and to ask how far the Ostrava story can provide lessons or guidance on 21st century political issues.
