Book excerpt: Sarah Daniels is "a writer with a natural talent for disturbance" (Observer) Set in the gutting sheds of the slaughterhouse at the Cattle Market in late Victorian Deptford, The Gut Girls shows how the lives of the girls are changed when their work is made illegal - "Regarded as little better than whores by their contemporaries the gut girls are...a boisterous, beer-swilling, strong-minded bunch, handy with a knife both in the gutting shed and outside it, defiantly independent in attitude and scornful of the illusion of male supremacy." Malcolm Hay (Time Out). Beside Herself is the first of three plays in this volume that deal with women and madness - "a dramatic analogue of a contemporary social tragedy which exists on a scale we are only just beginning to comprehend" (Observer); Head-Rot Holiday commissioned by Clean Break theatre company for ex-offenders, portrays the fate of women detained in special hospitals, a euphemism for an institution for the "criminally insane" - "There is a fine, hard humour, as well as compassion, in the way Head-Rot Holdiay examines the contradictions entangling these women's lives"; The Madness of Esmé and Shaz is "A weird and wondrous black comedy." (Spectator)

It may seem hard to believe, and it’s okay to be skeptical, but coming to a new mindset about smoking and vaping is the key to quitting. In This Naked Mind: Nicotine, Annie Grace and William Porter combine their trusted approaches to overcoming problem drinking—science-backed, habit-breaking systems that have worked for thousands—to vanquish tobacco addiction. Book excerpt: Two neighboring couples are caught in a dangerous tangle of betrayal and deception in this “taut, twisty psychological thriller. Totally riveting” (James Hayman, New York Times bestselling author of The Girl on the Bridge). When Leah and her husband, Clay, move from Seattle to Maine, she envisions a vibrant new neighborhood packed with families—playmates for the twins and new couple friends to bond with. But while Clay works long hours to establish his brewery, Leah is left alone each day in a nearly deserted housing development where the only other occupants prefer to keep to themselves. Bored and adrift, Leah finds herself watching Clarissa and Russell Gaines next door, envying their stylishly decorated home and their university careers. But Leah’s obsession with the intriguing, elegant Clarissa grows until she’s not just spying from afar but sneaking into their house, taking small objects…and reading Clarissa’s diary. It contains clues to a hidden turmoil Leah never guessed at—and a connection to a local college girl who’s disappeared. “Scary and disturbing with dark psychological twists and turns, it horrifies while it fascinates. I couldn’t turn away!”—Lisa Jackson, # 1 New York Times bestselling author

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus made many startling claims. Among the most startling, however, must be his assertion that the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms contain things written about him. Ask any Christian to point to Old Testament verses that contain things written about Jesus and you’ll see just how startling a claim this is. The first Christians, however, faced no such problem. As the book of Acts demonstrates, the early church preached Jesus from the Old Testament. In fact, in 1 Corinthians 15 Paul tells us that Jesus not only died according to the Scriptures but that he was raised according to the Scriptures. Paul asserts here that the Old Testament foretells Jesus’s resurrection. Contemporary scholars will warn us to be wary about reading Jesus back into the Old Testament. They’ll suggest that resurrection and the afterlife is an alien concept in the Old Testament. Paul, however, clearly invites us to search the Scriptures for precursors, promises, and prophecies about the resurrection. So, let’s follow the lead of Paul and find Easter in the Old Testament.

Book excerpt: Set in turn-of-the-century Washington, DICKFISH is a prurient peek into the limousine lives of six frisky young professionals, whose twisted histories, complex values and subterranean tunes ultimately reflect or reject the modern America of our imaginings. Its tongue-in-cheek tone lifts the randy tale to wild heights of irony, as left-wing elitists lampoon right-wing extremists and raging narcissists skewer noisome Neoconservatives. Nobody winds up covered in glory. But, in the end, as in life, decadent Democrats always find a way to have fun and dour Republicans never know why.

Book excerpt: From 1918’s Tickless Time through Waiting for Lefty, Death of a Salesman, A Streetcar Named Desire, A Raisin in the Sun, and The Prisoner of Second Avenue to 2005’s The Clean House, domestic labor has figured largely on American stages. No dramatic genre has done more than the one often dismissively dubbed “kitchen sink realism” to both support and contest the idea that the home is naturally women’s sphere. But there is more to the genre than even its supporters suggest. In analyzing kitchen sink realisms, Dorothy Chansky reveals the ways that food preparation, domestic labor, dining, serving, entertaining, and cleanup saturate the lives of dramatic characters and situations even when they do not take center stage. Offering resistant readings that rely on close attention to the particular cultural and semiotic environments in which plays and their audiences operated, she sheds compelling light on the changing debates about women’s roles and the importance of their household labor across lines of class and race in the twentieth century. The story begins just after World War I, as more households were electrified and fewer middle-class housewives could afford to hire maids. In the 1920s, popular mainstream plays staged the plight of women seeking escape from the daily grind; African American playwrights, meanwhile, argued that housework was the least of women’s worries. Plays of the 1930s recognized housework as work to a greater degree than ever before, while during the war years domestic labor was predictably recruited to the war effort—sometimes with gender-bending results. In the famously quiescent and anxious 1950s, critiques of domestic normalcy became common, and African American maids gained a complexity previously reserved for white leading ladies. These critiques proliferated with the re-emergence of feminism as a political movement from the 1960s on. After the turn of the century, the problems and comforts of domestic labor in black and white took center stage. In highlighting these shifts, Chansky brings the real home.
