Book excerpt: How Loney the Honey Badger Got Its Name shows how a ferocious badger, Loney, intimidates the animals of two forests; this causes Loney to be led to a beehive where he plunders the honeycombs, devours the royal jelly, and endangers the life of the queen, along with the entire forests. The badger’s behavior is repudiated by all the animals and the environment; this causes the badger to ultimately retreat to its sett in shame. The account contains excellent story elements—a great setting and an exciting plot, combined with examples of affixes, figures of speech, homographs, homophones, and homonyms. The story provides an avenue for a compare/contrast activity of the badger with other animals. This is a compelling story for young readers!

She also remembers pleasant times with her grandmother and grandfather. Feet signify specific periods; they jog memories. The memorable occasion with her grandmother in the cellar is brought back to life as a result of her fathers feet. The afternoons lesson learning parallel lines as well as her earliest connection with books are recounted because of Lisa-Joys feet. Christmas is brought to life because of Matthew-Johns pinky toe. The narrator believes feet have an even greater significance because they show the uniqueness of each family member.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederick Webb Hodge remarked that the Eastern Apache tribe called the Mescaleros were “never regarded as so warlike” as the Apaches of Arizona. But the Mescaleros’ history is one of hardship and oppression alternating with wars of revenge. They were friendly to the Spaniards until victimized, and friendly to Americans until they were betrayed again. For three hundred years Mescaleros fought the Spaniards and Mexicans. They fought Americans for forty more, before subsiding into lethargy and discouragement. Only since 1930 have the Mescaleros been able to make tribal progress. C. L. Sonnichsen tells the story of the Mescalero Apaches from the earliest records to the modern day, from the Indian's point of view. In early days the Mescaleros moved about freely. Their principal range was between the Río Grande and the Pecos in New Mexico, but they hunted into the Staked Plains and southward into Mexico. They owned nothing and everything. Today the Mescaleros are American citizens and own their reservation in the Tularosa country of New Mexico. While the Mescalero Apaches still struggle to retain their traditions and bridge the gap between their old life and the new, their people have made amazing progress.

Book excerpt: Sharon McGriff-Payne has spent the past three years of this first decade of the 21st Century mesmerized by African Americans from the 19th Century, especially the insistent voice of John Grider. Grider captured McGriff-Payne's imagination and guided her to mine largely neglected archives to unearth and compile the stories of African Americans in California's North Bay counties of Solano, Napa, and Sonoma from the 1840s through the 1920s. Grider, a former slave, Bear Flag veteran, and hardworking everyman has inspired McGriff-Payne's research. The indomitable Miss Delilah L. Beasley has also inspired the author. Her 1919 book, The Negro Trail Blazers of California, preserved the names and deeds of many of the North Bay's African American pioneers. John Grider's Century seeks to add those black voices to California's larger historical narrative, with the message, "We were here!" "Tell my story," Grider prompted. McGriff-Payne has attempted to fulfill that command and dedicates this volume to him and the other pioneers who founded schools, formed churches and civic organizations, advocated policy, built businesses, raised families and triumphed over daunting odds.
