Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have had the temerity to undertake a book about Anna Pavlova for two reasons. The first is that in the whole course of her theatrical life I was her closest associate. As her husband I had her unbounded confidence, managed all her affairs - theatrical and private - carried on all her correspondence, received those who came to see her (Pavlova herself could only very rarely receive anyone), was present at and assisted her in all her interviews for the press -and she was obliged to grant interviews to press representatives all over the world - spent with her her hours of leisure, made the necessary plans for new tours and discussed with her details of our vast and complicated enterprise. I stood nearer to her than anybody, and I knew and understood her thoughts and aspirations, her disappointments and chagrins better than anyone else. In addition to my personal nearness to Pavlova, I met the thousands of people in all the corners of the earth who came to voice their enthusiasm and love. Through talking with them and receiving letters from them, during Pavlova's life as well as after her death, I am in a position to judge better than any other to what a remarkable degree she shone forth a beacon of beauty and love. All human testimony from whatever sources only goes to confirm my judgment of her exceptional personality. The second and chief reason for the appearance of this book is the wish of Anna Pavlova herself. Many and many a time in the course of her life she told me that I ought to write a book about her, as nobody knew her so well as I did. This was of course impossible while she was alive, but now it is my duty. I shall be happy beyond measure if I succeed in this book in giving an image of Pavlova full of that spiritual beauty, for which as a woman and as an artist she was so beloved. And I do not think this will be difficult, for in order to render unto her that which is justly hers, one has only to speak the truth. VICTOR DANDRÉ

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born into a family of successful playwrights and producers, Agnes de Mille was determined to be an actress. Then one day she witnessed the Russian ballet dancer Anna Pavlova, and her life was altered forever. Hypnotized by Pavlova’s beauty, in that moment de Mille dedicated herself to dance. Her memoir records with lighthearted humor and wisdom not only the difficulties she faced—the resistance of her parents, the sacrifices of her training—but also the frontier atmosphere of early Hollywood and New York and London during the Depression. “This is the story of an American dancer,” writes de Mille, “a spoiled egocentric wealthy girl, who learned with difficulty to become a worker, to set and meet standards, to brace a Victorian sensibility to contemporary roughhousing, and who, with happy good fortune, participated by the side of great colleagues in a renaissance of the most ancient and magical of all the arts.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unsung classic of nineteenth-century Russian literature, Karolina Pavlova’s A Double Life alternates prose and poetry to offer a wry picture of Russian aristocratic society and vivid dreams of escaping its strictures. Pavlova combines rich narrative prose that details balls, tea parties, and horseback rides with poetic interludes that depict her protagonist’s inner world—and biting irony that pervades a seemingly romantic description of a young woman who has everything. A Double Life tells the story of Cecily, who is being trapped into marriage by her well-meaning mother; her best friend, Olga; and Olga’s mother, who means to clear the way for a wealthier suitor for her own daughter by marrying off Cecily first. Cecily’s privileged upbringing makes her oblivious to the havoc that is being wreaked around her. Only in the seclusion of her bedroom is her imagination freed: each day of deception is followed by a night of dreams described in soaring verse. Pavlova subtly speaks against the limitations placed on women and especially women writers, which translator Barbara Heldt highlights in a critical introduction. Among the greatest works of literature by a Russian woman writer, A Double Life is worthy of a central place in the Russian canon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long out of print, the three beautiful volumes contained here offer the modern reader a rare opportunity to see Vaslav Nijinsky, Anna Pavlova, and Isadora Duncan through the eyes of their contemporaries and admirers, and to share the excitement they were causing at the height of their careers. Originally published in conjunction with the Ballet Society, founded by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein, the books present essays, reviews, memoirs, photographs, and sketches, many of which are had to find elsewhere. These books are companions to the art of Nijinsky, Pavlova, and Duncan, providing insights that are essential for a complete picture of the dancers' achievements. Nijinsky:The six appreciations collected here illuminate Nijinsky's genius and character, and thirty pages of photographs portray his every move and gesture with singular fidelity. This book features Edwin Denby's famous essay, "Notes on Nijinsky Photographs," as well as an intimate account by Robert Edmond Jones of his collaboration with Nijinsky on "Til Eulenspiegel," the dancer's last work before the onset of madness. Pavlova: This volume captures the intangible personal qualities that made Anna Pavlova one of the most charismatic ballerinas of all time. An autobiographical sketch, "Pages of My Life," reveals her intense striving for perfection. Following this are excerpts from Carl Van Vechten's critique on Pavlova's performance at the Met-the first major study of the Russian dance in the United States. Finally, the brilliant commentary by poet Marianne Moore that accompanies photographs of Pavlova aids the reader to reconstruct the unique nature of Pavlova's style and technique. Isadora Duncan:The career of Isadora Duncan remains, fifty years after her death, one of the indestructible legends of the theater. She is a beacon to women everywhere, to all American dancers, and especially to those who dance solo. Included here are the comments of Carl Van Vechten on the occasion of Isadora Duncan's first Carnegie Hall concert. John Martin analyzes her style and contribution to dancing. A poem by Gordon Braig and a memoir by Allan Ross Macdougall, who worked with Duncan, bring the incandescent Isadora to stunning life.

Book excerpt: In pre-World War I England, a frail Jewish girl is diagnosed with flat feet, knock knees, and weak legs. In short order, Lilian Alicia Marks would become a dance prodigy, the cherished baby ballerina of Sergei Diaghilev, and the youngest ever soloist at his famed Ballets Russes. It was there that George Balanchine choreographed his first ballet for her, Henri Matisse designed her costumes, and Igor Stravinsky taught her music—all when the re-christened Alicia Markova was just 14. Given unprecedented access to Dame Markova’s intimate journals and correspondence, Tina Sutton paints a full picture of the dancer’s astonishing life and times in 1920s Paris and Monte Carlo, 1930s London, and wartime in New York and Hollywood. Ballet lovers and readers everywhere will be fascinated by the story of one of the twentieth century’s great artists.
