Book excerpt: "I have but one room left," I said to this latecomer. "And one is all I want," he said. Then, with a quick glance at my face: "I suppose you are a little particular whom you put into the oak parlor. Not everyone appreciates such romantic surroundings." I looked at him, completely puzzled. "The room is gloomy and uninviting," I said. "But beyond that, I do know of no especial claim it has upon our interest." "You astonish me," he said with an expression of surprise and incredulity -- and walked on, very thoughtfully, straight to the room. At the door he paused. ""Don't you know the secret of the oak parlor?"" Anna Katharine Green (1846-1935), a prolific novelist and poet, earned a place in literary history with "The Leavenworth Case, " the first detective novel by a woman.

Book excerpt: Anna Katharine Green (November 11, 1846 - April 11, 1935) was an American poet and novelist. She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing well plotted, legally accurate stories. Green has been called "the mother of the detective novel." Green is credited with shaping detective fiction into its classic form, and developing the series detective. Her main character was detective Ebenezer Gryce of the New York Metropolitan Police Force, but in three novels he is assisted by the nosy society spinster Amelia Butterworth, the prototype for Miss Marple, Miss Silver and other creations. She also invented the 'girl detective': in the character of Violet Strange, a debutante with a secret life as a sleuth. Indeed, as journalist Kathy Hickman writes, Green "stamped the mystery genre with the distinctive features that would influence writers from Agatha Christie and Conan Doyle to contemporary authors of suspenseful "whodunits." In addition to creating elderly spinster and young female sleuths, Green's innovative plot devices included dead bodies in libraries, newspaper clippings as "clews," the coroner's inquest, and expert witnesses. Yale Law School once used her books to demonstrate how damaging it can be to rely on circumstantial evidence. Written in 1878, her first book, The Leavenworth Case: A Lawyer's Story, sparked a debate in the Pennsylvania Senate over whether the book could "really have been written by a woman." Green was in some ways a progressive woman for her time-succeeding in a genre dominated by male writers-but she did not approve of many of her feminist contemporaries, and she was opposed to women's suffrage.

Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About The Forsaken Inn by Anna Katharine Green An old and dilapidated inn in upstate New York provides the setting for this gothic mystery involving two couples in the 1700s. Edwin Urquhart, loved by two sisters, chooses to marry the elder. Arriving at the Forsaken Inn for their honeymoon, they occupy an apartment containing a secret chamber. That night, the young bride is murdered and buried in this secret room. Did her new husband commit the crime--or is something much more sinister afoot? The Forsaken Inn by Anna Katharine Green is an exceptional novel of gothic horror set in late 18th-century Revolutionary America. The language is baroque and the plot contrivances are unbelievable. A classic mystery from the woman who is considered the "Mother of Detective Fiction" as her first book "The Leavenworth Case" (1878) introduced Inspector Ebenezer Gryce, the first fictional detective, 9 years before Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's first Sherlock Holmes mystery. Anna Katharine Green is sometimes referred to as the "Mother of Detective Fiction." This novel is an excellent illustration of how that came to be.

However that path failed to ignite any significant interest and she turned to fiction writing. She published her first - and most famous work in 1878 - 'The Leavenworth Case'. Wilkie Collins praised it and it sold extremely well It led to Anna writing 40 novels and to becoming known as 'the mother of the detective novel.' In helping to shape the genre she brought many other innovations including a series detective: her main character was detective Ebenezer Gryce of the New York Metropolitan Police Force, but in three novels he is assisted by the nosy society spinster Amelia Butterworth, another innovation and a prototype for Miss Marple, Miss Silver and others. She also invented the 'girl detective': in the character of Violet Strange, a debutante with a secret life as a sleuth. Anna's other innovations included the now familiar dead bodies in libraries, newspaper clippings as "clews," the coroner's inquest, and expert witnesses. Yale Law School once used her books to demonstrate how damaging it can be to rely on circumstantial evidence. Her career was now well advanced and she was much admired. On November 25, 1884, Green married the actor and stove designer, and later noted furniture maker, Charles Rohlfs, who was seven years her junior. They had three children; Rosamund, Roland and Sterling. Although Anna was a progressive she did not approve of many of her feminist contemporaries, and was opposed to women's suffrage. Anna Katharine Green died on April 11, 1935 in Buffalo, New York, at the age of 88.

Book excerpt: I was riding between Albany and Poughkeepsie. It was raining furiously, and my horse, already weary with long travel, gave unmistakable signs of discouragement. I was, therefore, greatly relieved when, in the most desolate part of the road, I espied rising before me the dim outlines of a house, and was correspondingly disappointed when, upon riding forward, I perceived that it was but a deserted ruin I was approaching, whose fallen chimneys and broken windows betrayed a dilapidation so great that I could scarcely hope to find so much as a temporary shelter therein. Nevertheless, I was so tired of the biting storm that I involuntarily stopped before the decayed and forbidding structure, and was, in truth, withdrawing my foot from the stirrup, when I heard an unexpected exclamation behind me, and turning, saw a chaise, from the open front of which leaned a gentleman of most attractive appearance. "What are you going to do?" he asked. "Hide my head from the storm," was my hurried rejoinder. "I am tired, and so is my horse, and the town, according to all appearances, must be at least two miles distant." "No matter if it is three miles! You must not take shelter in that charnel-house," he muttered; and moved along in his seat as if to show me there was room beside him....
