Download or read book Fusarium written by J. Chelkowski and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialists from a number of different disciplines have contributed to this book which presents actual basic and applied findings on Fusarium species, on their metabolites and taxonomy, in connection with pathogenicity to cereal plants and potato tubers. Over 100 metabolites produced by Fusaria are described together with results of studies on their occurrence in agricultural products, their metabolism in farm animals, and possibilities of elmination and detoxification during technological processes. Pathogenic Fusarium species are described from the point of view of their taxonomy, profiles of produced metabolites, ecology, pathogenicity and interaction with cereal tissues. Finally, some actual solutions to avoid cereal grain contamination are discussed, mainly in connection with agricultural practices and breeding programmes. The interdisciplinary and comprehensive nature of the book makes it particularly useful to all who are studying or teaching plant pathology, plant breeding, animal nutrition and any other area in which Fusaria and their metabolites play an important role.
Download or read book Crop Physiology written by Victor Sadras and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-09-17 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From climate change to farming systems to genetic modification of organisms, Crop Physiology, Second Edition provides a practical tool for understanding the relationships and challenges of successful cropping. With a focus on genetic improvement and agronomy, this book addresses the challenges of environmentally sound production of bulk and quality food, fodder, fiber, and energy which are of ongoing international concern. The second edition of Crop Physiology continues to provide a unique analysis of these topics while reflecting important changes and advances in the relevant science and implementation systems. Contemporary agriculture confronts the challenge of increasing demand in terms of quantitative and qualitative production targets. These targets have to be achieved against the background of soil and water scarcity, worldwide and regional shifts in the patterns of land use driven by both climate change and the need to develop crop-based sources of energy, and the environmental and social aspects of agricultural sustainability. - Provides a view of crop physiology as an active source of methods, theories, ideas, and tools for application in genetic improvement and agronomy - Written by leading scientists from around the world - Combines environment-specific cropping systems and general principles of crop science to appeal to advanced students, and scientists in agriculture-related disciplines, from molecular sciences to natural resources management
Book Synopsis Peatland Forestry by : Eero Paavilainen
Download or read book Peatland Forestry written by Eero Paavilainen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-04-13 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a review and synthesis of boreal mire ecosystems including peat soil properties, mire hydrology, carbon and nutrient cycling, and classification of mire sites. The emphasis, however, is on peatland forests as a renewable natural resource. The approach originated in northern Europe, because there, especially in Finland, operational scale forest drainage has a long tradition based on research aiming to maintain and increase wood production on peatlands. Whenever relevant, a closer look is also given to other countries in Europe, Canada, and the USA. The results of recent studies on different environmental effects of peatland forestry are also discussed in detail.

Book Synopsis Selenium in Biology and Human Health by : Raymond F. Burk
Download or read book Selenium in Biology and Human Health written by Raymond F. Burk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selenium plays a fascinating and still poorly understood role in the function of living cells and therefore in human health. Starting with investigations over 60 years ago into its role as a toxic agent in livestock disease, selenium studies have progressed rapidly with the application of tools from immunology and molecular biology. Selenium is now known to be important in human and animal nutrition, has been discovered as a structural component of so-called selenoproteins, and may play a number of physiological roles, ranging from cancer protection to hormone metabolism. Selenium in Biology and Human Health presents research syntheses on a range of topics involving selenium, written by specialists from around the world. It will be of interest to cell biologists and physiologists, nutritional scientists, and animal health researchers.

Book Synopsis Application of Electro-Ultrafiltration (EUF) in Agricultural Production by : K. Németh

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Symposium was organized by the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture and the Central Research Institute for Chemistry of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. This arduous task was coordinated by Dr. Varju to whom I wish to express my appreciation for his whole-hearted assistance. After the Symposium the participants had the opportunity to visit the vineyards and cellars of the 'Balatonboglar' state holding which proved of great interest. The First International EUF Symposium owes its success to the excellent cooperation between the Biintehof Agricultural Research Station and the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture, including the Central Research Institute for Chemistry of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The objective of the Symposium was to present the first results and experience gained with the EUF procedure, so that the papers delivered are only a survey of the present-day state of knowledge. The bulk of the work of editing, including the selection of the articles, fell on Prof. Dr. van Diest, Wageningen, for whose valuable advice and untiring efforts I wish to record my special thanks. Some of the papers presented at the Symposium have already been published elsewhere and they will not appear in this issue.
