Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerned conservationists and professional and amateur ornithologists alike welcomed the inauguration, in 1983, of Bird Conservation. Sponsored by the U.S. Section of the International Council for Bird Preservation, the ambitious project was designed to provide a yearly overview of current research and key ecological topics in the field of bird conservation. This, the second yearbook of the series, includes essays by leading ecologists and ornithologists and focuses on a range of issues critical to island birds--among them, the status of endangered birds of Micronesia, the distribution and abundance of Hawaiian native birds, the vulnerability of endemic island birds to extinction, and bird conservation efforts in the United States Caribbean. Also included are concise reports on recent bird conservation activities and research and an annotated bibliography of relevant literature.

This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ocean covers 70 percent of the Earth’s surface, and is essential for life on our planet – even for those of us who live nowhere near the sea! It provides us all with food and other materials that we need, regulates our climate and provides half of the oxygen we breathe. The ocean also offers us various means of transport and opportunities for recreation. People have long thought that the ocean was so wide and bountiful that it would go on supplying our needs forever, but this is not the case: human activities are causing significant damage to life in the ocean. People are often unaware of the problems created by this heavy reliance, as few of us have the opportunity to look beneath the surface of the sea and see the damage that our actions have caused. This is where the Ocean Challenge Badge comes in: let it take you on a journey to discover the ocean! It is packed with activities to help you learn about how the ocean works, the creatures that live in it, and just how important it is in our everyday lives. You will also discover how YOU can play a role in protecting our ocean for future generations. We hope you will be inspired to take the challenge and celebrate our ocean. So dive in and begin your aquatic discoveries!

Book Synopsis 2000 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species by : Craig Hilton-Taylor
Download or read book 2000 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species written by Craig Hilton-Taylor and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2000 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Release of the 2000 Red List is a major landmark for IUCN. It is the first time that listings of animals and plants have been combined and the first time that the Red List has been produced on CD-ROM. The 2000 Red List combines new assessmentsincluding all bird species, many antelope and bat species, most primates and sharks, all Asian freshwater turtles, more molluscs, and many otherswith those from previous publications. The combination of animals and plants into a single list containing assessments of more than 18,000 taxa (11,000 of which are threatened species) and the move towards improved documentation of each species on the list means that a hard-copy version of the Red List would run to several volumes. This, combined with the fact that the Red List will be updated annually, led to the decision to release the Red List in electronic format, via the World Wide Web and as a CD-ROM.

Book Synopsis The Failure of Modern Civilization and the Struggle for a "deep" Alternative by : Claudia von Werlhof
Download or read book The Failure of Modern Civilization and the Struggle for a "deep" Alternative written by Claudia von Werlhof and published by Beiträge zur Dissidenz. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western civilization is the Utopia of a better and higher life on Earth. The globalization of neo-liberalism proves that this project has failed. The paradigm of «Critical Theory of Patriarchy» explains this failure and discusses alternatives. By confronting the central civilizations in history, the egalitarian, life-oriented matriarchal one, and the hierarchical, nature and life dominating, hostile patriarchal one, we see that 5000 years of patriarchy have «replaced» matriarchies and nature itself by a «progressive» counter-world of «capital». This transformation characterizes «capitalist patriarchy» including «socialism». Its demise is due to the «alchemical» destruction of the world's resources, thought of, theologically legitimized and fetishized as «creation». This violence is not recognized. Elites have, instead, begun with a new «military alchemy», treating the whole Planet as weapon of mass destruction. Hence, the «Planetary Movement for Mother Earth».
Book Synopsis Artemia: Basic and Applied Biology by : Th.J. Abatzopoulos
Download or read book Artemia: Basic and Applied Biology written by Th.J. Abatzopoulos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this volume are to present an up-to-date (literature survey up to 2001) account of the biology of Artemia focusing particularly upon the major advances in knowledge and understanding achieved in the last fifteen or so years and emphasising the operational and functional linkage between the biological phenomena described and the ability of this unusual animal to thrive in extreme environments. Artemia is a genus of anostracan crustaceans, popularly known as brine shrimps. These animals are inhabitants of saline environments which are too extreme for the many species which readily predate them if opportunity offers. They are, thus, effectively inhabitants of extreme (hypersaline) habitats, but at the same time are able to tolerate physiologically large changes in salinity, ionic composition, temperature and oxygen tension. Brine shrimp are gener ally thought of as tropical and subtropical, but are also found in regions where temperatures are very low for substantial periods such as Tibet, Siberia and the Atacama desert. They have, thus, great powers of adaptation and are of interest for this capacity alone. The earliest scientific reference to brine shrimp is in 1756, when Schlosser reported their existence in the saltpans of Lymington, England. These saltpans no longer exist and brine shrimp are not found in Britain today. Later, Linnaeus named the brine shrimp Cancer salinus and later still, Leach used the name Artemia salina. The strong effect which the salinity of the medium exerts on the morphological development of Artemia is now widely recognised.
