Effect of Rations. - The experiment lasted 174 days. During this time the differences in the general physical condition and appearance of the pigs became very noticeable. Briefly, the findings were as follows: The pigs of Lot I, the low-protein group, developed slowly, remained small, and appeared to be unthrifty and undernourished. As the experiment progressed, they became sluggish, and, toward the end of the experiment, walked with difficulty. Pig 2 became so ill that it was removed on the forty-first day and given the ration of the Station herd. It died a week later. Two of the three remaining pigs in this lot died before the close of the experiment. The kidneys of these pigs were small and in a pathological condition, showing a chronic state of parenchymatous nephritis. The remaining pig, N 0. 1, which at the beginning of the experiment was considered to be the most thrifty of the animals selected, made fair gains, averaging pound per day. However, the kidneys of this animal were found to be small and in the same pathological condition as those of the other two. The livers were small, but otherwise normal. Early in the experiment, when Pig 2 died, one pig was removed from each of Lots II and III in order to make the three lots directly comparable from the standpoint of merit of the animals, number of animals, and area per head in each pen. A pound of protein from cornmeal or wheat flour is not equal to a pound of protein from milk or cheddar cheese or cot tage cheese or any kind of cheese in meeting growth needs. This is probably the most Important fact in a practical sense that farmers and the American public will have to recognize in the future. The building units from the proteins of our cereal grains are not so well suited as those from milk for rapid build-2 ing Of the protein structure of animals. It is particularly in this direction that nature did so well when through the mammary gland she constructed from the blood stream and thus indirectly from certain parts of poor proteins of the food, the proteins for the nutrition of the young. If the cereal grain proteins are used as the sole source of pro tein for the growing animal they will Show an efficiency of less than 30 per cent, while the proteins from milk will reach an efficiency of 65 per cent. In other words, while only 30 per cent Of a pound of proteins from the corn kernel would be stored away, 65 per cent of a pound from milk would be stored by the growing animal. In storing the 30 per cent of proteins from the cereal grains 70 per cent will be wasted, because it does not fit well into the growing structure of the young; but only 35 per cent of the milk proteins will be wasted.
