Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginnings in Animal Husbandry Agricultural education under these conditions lagged, and how to encourage interest became a serious problem with the colleges. Educators insisted that the teaching should be largely based on pure science, and it was Often difficult for the students to see the application. Recognizing this lack Of interest, a few Western colleges conceived the plan Of giving short winter courses of a popular nature, in which practical laboratory instruction should be given. Work in dairying, horticulture, and live stock judg ing first received attention. This practical training was most favorably regarded by the students. These winter courses grew rapidly in popularity, and paved the way for more attractive forms of instruction for the regular students. Through this medium of the short winter Course, both interest and attendance in the agricultural colleges rapidly grew. New courses of study were established, more buildings and equipment were required, and then agricultural education sprang into popularity. The production of new types of text books, on subjects heretofore undiscussed in pedagogical form, logically followed in this evolution in agricultural edu cation. During this movement in behalf Of rural uplift, a few progressive men urged the importance of agricultural educa tion in the country schools of higher grade. This resulted in establishing agricultural schools Of secondary grade in different parts of the United States, both North and South. During the past few years, country life has become popular. As a result, there is a widespread movement in behalf of agricultural education, and the subject is now being taught in its various phases in many schools all over the land. Recognizing the need of an elementary text book for young people, the author has seen fit to prepare this volume on animal husbandry, the first of its kind devoted to this special field. It is his earnest hope that such lessons as either teacher or pupil shall find within these pages, may result in a desire for yet wider knowledge of and a more sympathetic interest in our farm animals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Partial Index to Animal Husbandry Literature Desiring to render a service to the student of live stock hus bandry who is in search of literature, the writer has prepared this bibliography. It is limited in the number of titles, but many of the references are quite available, consequently the list should be service able. The titles oi many of the books are given in considerable, detail, thus indicating the nature of the contents. Occasional brief comments are made by the writer on the value and standing of cer tain books, bulletins or articles. Such comments may assist one in the selection of present-day literature of the subject. Recognizing the fact that this index is quite limited in numbers of titles, that many important ones are not given, and that in future many more will be published, this volume is prepared with blank leaves between the printed pages, so that those who desire may at their pleasure add other useful titles not on the printed page. The horns should always be polished and otherwise fixed so as to present a neat and attractive appearance. The same treatment is not applicable to all horns, as some are much more delicate than others. In some horns the quick is very close, thus care must be. Exercised in the scraping to prevent bleeding or the weakening of the shell. If the horn is too long, the first step will be to shorten the same. This should be done with a fine-toothed saw, but care must be taken not to cut too deep. Saw off the amount you think necessary to make the horn the desired length. After the cutting is done, then commence and file the horn at the point to its natural shape, beginning about an inch from the point and filing from the outside inwards, making it look as natural as possible so as to avoid detection. If the animal be a Shorthorn, commence filing the inside Of the horn, giving it a flat inside appearance, which is correct in a Shorthorn, although not necessarily in all horned animals. Next begin at the outside, smooth and round it, making it blend as nearly as possible with the already dressed inside. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Breeding of Farm Animals While man makes economic use of many species of animals, this discussion is limited to that of breeding farm animals, including horses, cattle, sheep, swine and poultry, although other species occasionally may be used as illustrations and examples. Farm animals provide labor, food and clothing - Few realize the extent of our dependence upon farm animals. The horse has fought our wars and won our battles and is our principal beast of burden. In connection with improved machinery, he has increased man's productive power many fold. It is estimated that the horses of the United States are equal in productive industry to that Of laborers. In America, it is the horse that enables us to make farming an attractive business, rather than a peasant's drudgery, as in many of the older nations of the world. In the United States, approximately one-half of the amount spent for food by the average family goes for the purchase of meat, eggs and dairy products. Our stand ard foods are bread and potatoes, meat, milk and eggs, three of which are provided directly by farm animals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Farm Animals During the past decade the subject of agricultural edu cation for our secondary schools and colleges has received much attention. Prior to this period a number of general texts on agriculture for schools, elementary in character, pre pared by men trained in general science or classics, were published. These texts had a limited distribution, partly because of lack of interest in the subject by teachers and pupils, and partly because of the methods of presentation. These authors saw no way of handling the subject, except ing by a more or less stereotyped style, in which chemistry, or some natural science, furnished the reasoning basis. The establishment of agricultural colleges, equipped with farms, and working laboratories of greenhouses, orchards, gardens, field crops, and stables with their contents of farm animals and utensils, paved the way to a new and interest ing treatment of agricultural subjects. The introduction of popular short winter courses about 1890, was the first irn portant step in this direction. Simple laboratory exercises in dairying, horticulture, and live-stock judging, appealed to students, and added much to the popularity of the in struction. As an outgrowth of these has come the great popular movement in America in behalf of agricultural edu cation. Not only the colleges, but many secondary schools have adopted agricultural courses, and some have been equipped with farms and laboratories, where the students are taught the relationship of principles to farm practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sheep-Farming in North America N o branch of animal husbandry has passed through so many serious changes in the last century as has the sheep-raising industry. Established, and for many years continued, with wool as the main oh ject, the successive changes have seemed to make the mutton side of sheep-raising more and more important. The more comprehensive books upon sheep em phasized wool-production and were largely devoted to diseases. The present volume considers the sheep as having an important place or part in intensive stock-farming. American farmers, as a rule, are not prepared to give sheep the attention they will repay, or that is necessary if the possibilities of employing them in the utilization of high-priced lands are to be realized. The range areas devoted to sheep are diminishing, and, as the industry comes to have a more stable position on general farms, the supplies and market prices may be expected to be more uniform than in the past.
