Zwischen 1968 und 2004 erschienen, spiegelt sich in ihren vielfältigen Interessensgebieten auch die Geschichte der deutschen Anglistik und Amerikanistik der letzten Jahrzehnte - mit deutlichen Akzenten auf der Fachdidaktik des Englischen. Fünf Bereiche finden besondere Beachtung: In Kapitel I bietet dieser Band eine umfangreiche Einführungen in generelle Fragen der Literaturtheorie und Literaturanalyse. Ergänzend finden sich in Kapitel II exemplarische, modellhafte Analysen ausgewählter literarischer und kulturell bedeutender Texte vom 18. bis zum 20. Jahrhundert. Es schließt sich in Kapitel III eine Reihe von grundsätzlichen Überlegungen zur Fachdidaktik an. Das Spektrum der Beiträge reicht von philosophisch-pädagogischen Reflexionen zu Inhalten und Zielen von Bildung, gerade im Bereich der Fremdsprachen, bis zu Untersuchungen zu neueren Tendenzen des Englischen in Richtung einer international verwendeten Lingua franca. Mit konkretem Bezug auf eine Vielzahl von methodischen Fragestellungen und anhand verschiedener literarischer Texte bietet Kapitel IV unterrichtsrelevante methodisch-didaktische Empfehlungen. Ebenso stellt es Modelle der Interpretation literarischer Texte vor, die sich vor allem an den literarischen Gattungen von Drama, Kurzgeschichte, Dichtung und Essay orientieren. Kapitel V zu Hochschulen im Ausland vertieft und erweitert das bisher aufgefächerte Themenfeld der literarischen und kulturellen Vermittlung. Es geht hier um die administrativen Rahmenbedingungen universitärer Lehre und Forschung, wie sie Rüdiger Ahrens nicht allein aufgrund seiner theoretischen Beschäftigung, sondern auch vor dem Erfahrungshintergrund mehrerer internationaler Gastdozenturen und -professuren sowie als Initiator zahlreicher Austauschprogramme herausarbeiten kann.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to bring into focus some of the major moves in western discourses about tourism and travel writing from the early Victorian to the late modern or post-western age. It offers a series of readings connecting the work of travel writers as diverse as Alexander Kinglake, William Cobbett, George Henry Borrow, E.M. Forster and Bruce Chatwin to their respective cultural and material contexts. The grounding model is that of travel writing as a form of cultural intervention and the individual text as an artificial yet intermediary space that constantly stimulates the travellers' consciousness, moving them to revise judgements passed on their own as well as on the other culture. In individual chapters, the study explores different stages of revision in travel discourse since the late-romantic age, surveys new touristic models installed in the place of received notions of picturesque or adventurous travel and analyses the role of exotic and nostalgic registers in the construction of cultural value.
