Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Angel of the Prairies: A Dream of the Future This manuscript was read in Nauvoo, in a Council of the Church, in the presence of the Prophet Joseph Smith, but never appeared in print until last Spring, in the Northern Light, when it became at once the admiration of all the Saints who had the privilege of its perusal. While purporting to be written under the similitude of a dream or vision, we will state that no such dream or vision was had by the writer, the whole manuscript having been written at Nauvoo, in the Winter of 1843 - 4. Book excerpt: THE thrilling and interesting narrative contained in this little book, though setting up no claim to being an authentic or infallible prophecy, yet probably contains as much condensed truth and as little fiction as any work in any age, that has inspired truth for its foundation, and romance simply for its embellishment and adornings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Alexander Linn's 'The Main LDS Books' is an extensive compilation that serves as a thorough introduction and academic resource on the core texts and writings that underpin the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). This collection not only includes the cardinal works of scripture—The Bible (KJV), The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine and Covenants, and The Pearl of Great Price—but it also encompasses a wealth of doctrinal essays, discourses, and biographies by influential LDS leaders and scholars. With a keen editorial eye, the texts are arranged to present an overarching narrative of the LDS faith and its teachings, shedding light on its theology, history, and the lives of its founders. The scholarly exposition is complemented by an examination of the Church's theological evolution through seminal works, such as 'Jesus the Christ' by Talmage and 'A Rational Theology' by Widtsoe, contextualizing the LDS Church within the broader Christian tradition and American religious history. Linn himself, historically known for his critical views on Mormonism, notably in his book 'The Story of the Mormons,' has here taken on the role of editor to present an unvarnished and comprehensive outlook on Mormon writings. His extensive research into Mormon history and doctrines, as indicated in his past works, equips him with a unique perspective that brings forth the complexities and nuances of the LDS Church. Through 'The Main LDS Books,' Linn offers an inclusive treasury that gives readers the opportunity to explore and understand the LDS faith from its foundational texts, through prophetic teachings and expositions, to the vibrant histories of its leaders. This collection is recommended for scholars, theologians, historians, and anyone with a keen interest in the intricacies of the LDS Church and its canonical literature. It provides an unparalleled resource for comprehensive study, reflection, and discourse on the multifaceted aspects of Mormon thought and leadership. Whether one approaches this collection from an academic, faith-based, or historical standpoint, 'The Main LDS Books' is an indispensable anthology that delivers depth, variety, and scholarly insight into one of the most intriguing religious movements of the modern era.

Book excerpt: Using the concept of "classical republicanism" in his analysis, Kenneth Winn argues against the common view that the Mormon religion was an exceptional phenomenon representing a countercultural ideology fundamentally subversive to American society. Rather, he maintains, both the Saints and their enemies affirmed republican principles, but in radically different ways. Winn identifies the 1830 founding of the Mormon church as a religious protest against the pervasive disorder plaguing antebellum America, attracting people who saw the libertarianism, religious pluralism, and market capitalism of Jacksonian America as threats to the Republic. While non-Mormons shared the perception that the Union was in danger, many saw the Mormons as one of the chief threats. General fear of Joseph Smith and his followers led to verbal and physical attacks on the Saints, which reinforced the Mormons' conviction that America had descended into anarchy. By 1846, violent opposition had driven Mormons to the uninhabited Great Salt Lake Basin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between early Mormons and the United States was marked by anxiety and hostility, heightened over the course of the nineteenth century by the assassination of Mormon leaders, the Saints' exile from Missouri and Illinois, the military occupation of the Utah territory, and the national crusade against those who practiced plural marriage. Nineteenth-century Latter-day Saints looked forward to apocalyptic events that would unseat corrupt governments across the globe, particularly the tyrannical government of the United States. The infamous "White Horse Prophecy" referred to this coming American apocalypse as "a terrible revolutionEL in the land of America, such as has never been seen before; for the land will be literally left without a supreme government." Mormons envisioned divine deliverance by way of plagues, natural disasters, foreign invasions, American Indian raids, slave uprisings, or civil war unleashed on American cities and American people. For the Saints, these violent images promised a national rebirth that would vouchsafe the protections of the United States Constitution and end their oppression. In Terrible Revolution, Christopher James Blythe examines apocalypticism across the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, particularly as it took shape in the writings and visions of the laity. The responses of the church hierarchy to apocalyptic lay prophecies promoted their own form of separatist nationalism during the nineteenth century. Yet, after Utah obtained statehood, as the church sought to assimilate to national religious norms, these same leaders sought to lessen the tensions between themselves and American political and cultural powers. As a result, visions of a violent end to the nation became a liability to disavow and regulate. Ultimately, Blythe argues that the visionary world of early Mormonism, with its apocalyptic emphases, continued in the church's mainstream culture in modified forms but continued to maintain separatist radical forms at the level of folk-belief.
