Book excerpt: The concepts and theories surrounding the aesthetic category of the grotesque are explored in this book by pursuing their employment in the films of American auteurs Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, the Coen Brothers and David Lynch. The author argues that interpreting these directors' films through the lens of the grotesque allows us1to situate both the auteurs and the films within a long history of the grotesque in art and aesthetics. This cultural tradition effectively subsumes the contribution of any artist or1genre that intersects it but also affords the artist or genre--the auteur and the genre filmmaker--a pantheon and an abundance of images, themes, and motifs through which he1or she can subversively represent the world and our place in it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baudelaire's Fleurs du Mal, which in successive editions contained all of his published poems, has opened new vistas for man's imagination and quickened the sensibilities of poets everywhere. The greatest French poet of the 19th century, Baudelaire was also the first truly modem poet, and his direct and indirect influence on the literature of our time has been immeasurable. Flowers of Evil: A Selection contains 53 poems which the editors feel best represent the total work and which. in their opinion, have been most successfully rendered into English. The French texts as established by Yves Gérard Le Dantec for the Pléiade edition are printed en face. Included are Baudelaire's "Three Drafts of a Preface" and brief notes on the nineteen translators whose work is represented.

Book excerpt: The Flowers of Evil (Les Fleurs du Mal) may speak of the carnal, depraved, and decaying in human life and the city, but Charles Baudelaire's poetry so infuses even the most grotesque with beauty and a kind of innocence that the reader is moved beyond the rubric of the sacred and profane, into sublimity. This new edition, which features the English translation by F.P. Sturm and W.J. Robertson, also includes artwork by Lester Banzuelo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baudelaire is one of the major innovators in French literature. His poetry is influenced by the French romantic poets of the earlier 19th century, although its attention to the formal features of verse connect it more closely to the work of the contemporary 'Parnassians'. As for theme and tone, in his works we see the rejection of the belief in the supremacy of nature and the fundamental goodness of man as typically espoused by the romantics and expressed by them in rhetorical, effusive and public voice in favor of a new urban sensibility, an awareness of individual moral complexity, an interest in vice (linked with decadence) and refined sensual and aesthetical pleasures, and the use of urban subject matter, such as the city, the crowd, individual passers-by, all expressed in highly ordered verse, sometimes through a cynical and ironic voice. Formally, the use of sound to create atmosphere, and of 'symbols', (images which take on an expanded function within the poem), betray a move towards considering the poem as a self-referential object, an idea further developed by the Symbolists Verlaine and Mallarmé, who acknowledge Baudelaire as a pioneer in this regard.

Book excerpt: With their beloved parents long passed away, the beautiful Angela Brooke and her brother Trevor are penniless and the upkeep of the dilapidated family Priory is all but impossible to manage. Then one day Trevor returns from London with an exciting plan, a chance for Angela to earn the princely sum of one thousand pounds, which is more than enough to solve their financial problems just by playing ‘make-believe’ for a very short time. The legendary George Edwardes, the impresario behind the famous and glamorous Gaiety Girls and the shows at London’s Gaiety Theatre has promised that the Gaiety Girls will appear in an exclusive show at the Marquis of Vauxhall’s own private theatre. The trouble is that the star of his play based on The Rake’s Progress, which the Marquis himself has written to entertain his guests, has been taken ill and, afraid to disappoint the Marquis, George Edwardes is desperate for another angelic beauty to take her place. Who better, Trevor argues, than Angela, who was so named for her angelic appearance. And so, with great trepidation, Angela arrives at the stately home of the handsome and haughty Marquis where, uncharacteristically made up to look like a wanton Gaiety Girl, she attracts the unwanted attention of the Marquis’s gentlemen-friends. But soon her angelic beauty, her excellent equestrian skills and her gentleness with his young daughter pique the curiosity of her host. And soon he is utterly smitten.

Book excerpt: An item-by-item discussion of the innumerable, often obscure details of Malcolm Lowry's novel, this book comprises 1,600 notes covering some 7,000 specific points. The notes are keyed to page numbers in the Penguin paperback and the two standard hardback editions. The appendices include a glossary, bibliography, maps of the region, and an index of motifs. In their comprehensive but unpedantic commentary on the novel's complexities, the authors' emphasis is on the narrative level. All points of obscurity are followed by an interpretation of fact. Thus references are noted to films, books, places, foreign languages, and national and tribal histories. Special attention is given to the literary, mystical, and Mexican background.

Book excerpt: Regarded as the first author of the Symbolist tradition, the French poet Charles Baudelaire almost singlehandedly shifted the literary world from the Romanticism of statement and emotion to the modern poetry of symbol and suggestion. His strikingly original works are noted for their psychological and moral complexity, powerfully representing the thinking of modern man. Baudelaire’s most famous work, ‘Les Fleurs du mal’ (The Flowers of Evil) was published in 1857, when it caused a literary sensation. For many, it is considered the most influential poetry collection of the nineteenth century. The Delphi Poets Series offers readers the works of the world’s finest poets, with superior formatting. This volume presents Baudelaire’s collected poetical works, with related illustrations and the usual Delphi bonus material.
