Book excerpt: A "gripping…sober and meticulous" (David Margolick, Wall Street Journal) biography of the infamous Nazi doctor, from a former Justice Department official tasked with uncovering his fate. Perhaps the most notorious war criminal of all time, Josef Mengele was the embodiment of bloodless efficiency and passionate devotion to a grotesque worldview. Aided by the role he has assumed in works of popular culture, Mengele has come to symbolize the Holocaust itself as well as the failure of justice that allowed countless Nazi murderers and their accomplices to escape justice. Whether as the demonic doctor who directed mass killings or the elusive fugitive who escaped capture, Mengele has loomed so large that even with conclusive proof, many refused to believe that he had died. As chief of investigative research at the Justice Department’s Office of Special Investigations in the 1980s, David G. Marwell worked on the Mengele case, interviewing his victims, visiting the scenes of his crimes, and ultimately holding his bones in his hands. Drawing on his own experience as well as new scholarship and sources, Marwell examines in scrupulous detail Mengele’s life and career. He chronicles Mengele’s university studies, which led to two PhDs and a promising career as a scientist; his wartime service both in frontline combat and at Auschwitz, where his “selections” sent innumerable innocents to their deaths and his “scientific” pursuits—including his studies of twins and eye color—traumatized or killed countless more; and his postwar flight from Europe and refuge in South America. Mengele describes the international search for the Nazi doctor in 1985 that ended in a cemetery in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the dogged forensic investigation that produced overwhelming evidence that Mengele had died—but failed to convince those who, arguably, most wanted him dead. This is the riveting story of science without limits, escape without freedom, and resolution without justice.

Book excerpt: The Accused: 13-year-old Derek King and his 12-year-old brother, Alex, Sunday school students with choirboy looks. After midnight on November 26, 2001, someone bludgeoned Terry King to death while he slept, and set his Florida home afire. By the time the firefighters extinguished the blaze, King's sons, Alex, 12, and Derek, 13, were at the home of their forty-year-old friend, Ricky Chavis, a convicted child-molester. By the next afternoon, following confessions, both boys were charged as adults in their father's slaying. Chavis was tried separately for the same crime-incredibly by the same attorney who would prosecute Alex and Derek, and argue two contradictory theories. The Victim: Their own father. When Alex divulged his sexual relationship with Chavis, the trial took a sensational turn. So did Alex and Derek, who recanted their confession and blamed Chavis to no avail. A jury convicted the boys of second-degree murder, but the judge threw the verdict out. Chavis was acquitted. But the case wasn't over. As more disturbing revelations came to light, as criminal motives became more complex, and as the line between guilt and innocence was crossed, a stunned nation watched in disbelief to learn the ultimate fate of the...Angels of Death.

Book excerpt: Serial killers in the caring professions. Doctors, nurses and health workers have a duty of care to their patients to ensure they act in the best interests of an individual; and not act or fail to act in a way that results in harm. But those featured within these pages are serial killers who roamed their places of work, preying on people at their most vulnerable. Angels of Death is an updated collection of real life crimes exploring murders committed in hospitals and doctors' surgeries - the very places where lives are supposed to be healed or saved. The accounts also include cases where the murderers struck in places that are meant to be safe havens, like aged care homes and even people's living rooms. These disturbing crimes take place in Australia, the United Kingdom, the USA, Canada and Europe. Emily Webb is a journalist and author, specialising in true crime. She co-hosts the popular podcast Australian True Crime.

Book excerpt: The award-winning authors of The Road to Hell: How the Biker Gangs Are Conquering Canada bring us a definitive, up-to-the-minute account of the Hells Angels and the international biker network. Marsden and Sher explain how the expansion of America’ s foremost motorcycle gang has allowed this once ragtag group of rebels, outcasts and felons to become one of the world’s most sophisticated criminal organizations. While the media has continued to toast the Hells Angels California leader, Sonny Barger, as an American legend, the facts tell another story—they are America’s major crime export. With an estimated 2,500 full-patch members in 25 countries, the Hells Angels have inspired a global subculture of biker gangs that are among the most feared and violent underworld players. Angels of Death takes readers to Arizona, inside the biggest American police undercover operation to infiltrate the bikers; to British Columbia where wealthy bikers dominate the organized crime pyramid; to Australia where the “bikies” shoot it out with police; to Curaçao where terrorist organizations funnel drugs to Dutch bikers; and to the streets of Oslo, Copenhagen and Helsinki where a murderous biker war saw rocket attacks and bombs turn Scandinavia into a war zone. For the first time, police officers who have infiltrated biker gangs tell their secrets—revealing the challenges, fears and horrors they’ve discovered going undercover. Sher and Marsden take the reader behind the latest headlines to tell the story of how the Hells Angels became so powerful, and how the police—with only a few successes—have tried to stop them. Excerpt from Angels of Death: Three murderous evenings, three different continents, three faces of the Angels of death: the killing of innocents, the killing of fellow bikers, and the killing of cops. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of lives ruined, brains fried, bodies withered by the methamphetamines, cocaine and other drugs pushed by the bikers. And yet while the body count kept mounting, Sonny Barger, the Californian patriarch and international leader of the Hells Angels, was being feted by the international media as he promoted his latest bestselling book. Even the usually thoughtful British press fell for the rebel Yankee. The Times called him, “affable, big-hearted, warm.” The Independent labelled him an “American legend.” And in many ways he is.

Through the frank and often troubling first-hand accounts of health professionals who have been involved in assisted death, the book records for the first time this secret but real area of medical and nursing practice. Through face-to-face interviews with these "angels of death, " Roger S. Magnusson explores the social practices, relationships, and networks that constitute "underground" euthanasia. How is assisted death actually practiced within health care settings? What are the issues that surround the making of such a momentous decision? How do health care workers justify their attitudes and actions in this area? Angels of Death offers detailed answers to these questions and many others. The doctors, nurses, and therapists who were interviewed pseudonymously for this study work in the HIV/AIDS communities in the United States and Australia. Their perspectives and practices, their attitudes and feelings, illuminate the assisted death debate and expose a variety of disturbing issues, including the reality of "botched attempts, " euthanasia without consent, and unduly hasty measures to bring about death. The testimony of medical practitioners, combined with Magnusson's thoughtful assessment of the issues, will be of intense interest to both opponents and advocates of proposals to legalize euthanasia.

Book excerpt: It made national headlines: the true story of how state enrolled nurse Beverley Allitt murdered four children on her ward and attempted to take the lives of many others. Liam Taylor's death, on 21 February 1991, was to become the first in a string of infanticides carried out by the soon-to-be-notorious 'Angel of Death'. Between February and April 1991, four babies were murdered and another nine attacked. Recounting the emotional turmoil of those parents, the 3-month police investigation, Allitt's motive and accounts from her early life, John Askill and Martyn Sharpe tell a sensitive, at times harrowing, tale of how this 'plain', rather 'ordinary' girl from the small village of Corby Glen became one of Britain's most notorious serial killers.

Book excerpt: The Angel of Death: The Shocking True Story of Serial Killer Charles Edmund CullenCharles Edmund Cullen is a former nurse who is considered to be the most prolific serial killer in New Jersey history and possibly also in American history. Charles Edmund Cullen was born the youngest of eight children into a large New Jersey family. His childhood was largely an unhappy one, his father died when he was a few months old and Cullen was bullied throughout his schooling. Charles Edmund Cullen was still a young child when he made his first suicide attempt. It was far from being his last. After losing his mother in a car accident Cullen dropped out of high school and joined the Navy. Here he trained as a ballistic missiles technician. However just as he had found as a Schoolboy Cullen struggled to fit in and was considered something of a misfit. During this period his mental health became increasingly unstable. After being discharged from the Navy Cullen trained as a nurse. While studying Cullen met Adrienne Taub, the couple would later marry. Shortly after the birth of his first daughter and the death of his brother Cullen killed his first known victim by means of lethal injection. This occurred whilst he was working at Saint Barnabas Hospital. Despite numerous concerns over his behavior and while Cullens mental health continued to deteriorate, including further suicide attempts, he was allowed to continue working in a series of hospitals. This led to as many as40 people losing their lives. This book looks at how circumstances in Cullens personal life, such as the breakdown of his marriage following his abusive behavior, sparked his killing sprees. We shall also discuss how, despite arousing some suspicions, Cullen's murderous behavior was allowed to continue for so long.
