Book excerpt: A piercing, unforgettable love story set in Greenwood, Oklahoma, also known as the “Black Wall Street,” and against the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. Isaiah Wilson is, on the surface, a town troublemaker, but is hiding that he is an avid reader and secret poet, never leaving home without his journal. Angel Hill is a loner, mostly disregarded by her peers as a goody-goody. Her father is dying, and her family’s financial situation is in turmoil. Though they’ve attended the same schools, Isaiah never noticed Angel as anything but a dorky, Bible toting church girl. Then their English teacher offers them a job on her mobile library, a three-wheel, two-seater bike. Angel can’t turn down the money and Isaiah is soon eager to be in such close quarters with Angel every afternoon. But life changes on May 31, 1921 when a vicious white mob storms the Black community of Greenwood, leaving the town destroyed and thousands of residents displaced. Only then, Isaiah, Angel, and their peers realize who their real enemies are.

Book excerpt: In 'Bunker Hill Los Angeles: Essence of Sunshine and Noir', historian Nathan Marsak tells the story of the Hill, from the district's inception in the mid-nineteenth century to its present day. Marsak commemorates the poets and writers, artists and activists, little guys and big guys, and of course, the many architects who built and rebuilt the community on the Hill - time after historic time. Any fan of American architecture will treasure Marsak's analysis of buildings that have crowned the Hill: the exuberance of Victorian shingle and spindlework, from Mission to Modern, from Queen Anne to Frank Gehry, Bunker Hill has been home to it all, the ever-changing built environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angel Children is a careful presentation of Latter-day Saint doctrine concerning the status of children who pass away before being baptized. It is a compassionate book which brings comfort and consolation through increased understanding to those who read it. The author, Mary V Hill, lost her own child and shares the emotions she felt during that trying period. She deals with aspects of religious life when serious illness develops: effective prayer, faith and healing, priesthood administration, man's appointed time to die, and one's attitude towards death. The subject then shifts to the status of little children after their passing. She shows how little children need no baptism, that they are heirs of the Celestial Kingdom, and that they are redeemed from the temptations of Satan. Life in the Spirit World is discussed, then the resurrection and the status of children following the resurrection is considered. Another chapter is devoted to the status of retarded children here on earth. The author shows that the eternal spirit of a retarded child is not affected by the illness and discusses the eternal plan for such children. Great comfort is found in the final chapter: Overcoming the Challenge. The author tells of the necessity for having a positive attitude, mourning and being comforted, and ends with the reassurance that after much tribulation come the blessings. Angel Children is readable and inspirational. It is also a valuable collection of doctrinal materials on this important subject, including the scriptures and words of instruction and counsel by General Authorities of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Horizon Publishers is pleased to recommend it highly!

As days pass into years in the midst of the beautiful hills, the laughter of children, and God’s providence—is it too much for Rose to hope for love in return? An amazing journey toward love and belonging, filled with the wonder of the season of Christ’s birth. When Old Order Amish Rose Kurtz is asked to leave her family, travel deep into West Virginia, and help Joel Dienner with his children in the wake of tragedy, the quiet young woman recognizes a home where she might find kindness instead of criticism and hope replacing harsh words. She agrees to stay in Forest Hill and become Joel’s wife for the sake of his family needs, but their marriage is to be a partnership, one built from need, not love and affection. As the years pass, Rose continues to beckon Joel to join life again, to take joy in his growing children, and to awaken his heart to the possibility of new love. Joel hopes that Rose can move beyond deep-rooted hurts to see the beautiful Christmas ahead, their season. But will the arrival of a beautiful widow and a series of misunderstandings reverse how far Rose and Joel have come?

Book excerpt: "A blockbuster of a biography . . . absolutely magnificent."--San Francisco Chronicle Jack Kerouac--"King of the Beats," unwitting catalyst for the '60s counterculture, groundbreaking author--was a complex and compelling man: a star athlete with a literary bent; a spontaneous writer vilified by the New Critics but adored by a large, youthful readership; a devout Catholic but aspiring Buddhist; a lover of freedom plagued by crippling alcoholism. Desolate Angel follows Kerouac from his childhood in the mill town of Lowell, Massachusetts, to his early years at Columbia where he met Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, and Neal Cassady, beginning a four-way friendship that would become a sociointellectual legend. In rich detail and with sensitivity, Dennis McNally recounts Kerouac's frenetic cross-country journeys, his experiments with drugs and sexuality, his travels to Mexico and Tangier, the sudden fame that followed the publication of On the Road, the years of literary triumph, and the final near-decade of frustration and depression. Desolate Angel is a harrowing, compassionate portrait of a man and an artist set in an extraordinary social context. The metamorphosis of America from the Great Depression to the Kennedy administration is not merely the backdrop for Kerouac's life but is revealed to be an essential element of his art . . . for Kerouac was above all a witness to his exceptional times.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2015 Griffin Poetry Prize Shortlisted for the 2014 T.S. Eliot Prize In The Stairwell, his tenth collection, Michael Longley’s themes and forms reach a new intensity. The second part of the book is a powerful sequence of elegies for his twin brother, Peter, and the dominant mood elsewhere is elegiac. The title poem begins: ‘I have been thinking about the music for my funeral ...’ The two parts are also linked by Homer. Longley is well-known for his Homeric versions, and the Iliad is a presiding presence – both in poems about the Great War and in the range of imagery that gives his twin’s death a mythic dimension. Yet funeral music can be life-affirming. Longley has built this collection on intricate doublings, not only when he explores the tensions of twinship. The psychologically suggestive word ‘stairwell’ is itself an ambiguous compound. These poems encompass birth as well as death, childhood and age, nature and art, the animal and human worlds, tenderness and violence, battlefield and ‘homeland’. The Stairwell is a richly textured, immensely moving work. Michael Longley has the rare ability to fuse emotional depth with complicated artistry: to make them, somehow, the same thing.

Book excerpt: Michael Longley has remarkable powers of reinvention. Certain themes remain constant--the natural world, war, violence, love, friendship, art, death--but they also keep changing because the forms and genres of his poetry never stand still. In A Hundred Doors a sinuous short line complements his variations on pentameter and hexameter. Longley's interlacing of individual lyrics, so that a diverse collection seems a single poem, intensifies in the shadow of mortality. A sequence about his grandchildren's births is counterpointed by elegies, including Longley's continuing elegy for the Great War dead. The Mayo townland Carrigskeewaun, with its cast of flora and fauna, also takes on fresh guises. Longley is among Europe's foremost "ecological" poets. Yet Carrigskeewaun is ultimately symbolic, a microcosm, a "soul-arena." A Hundred Doors roams in time and space. The title poem evokes the oldest Byzantine church in Greece: Our Lady of a Hundred Doors on the island of Paros. The remains of a Greek temple "ache" beneath its floor. Wild orchids, which crop up in Greece and the Italian Garfagnana as well as Ireland, are among the collection's multiple "doors." Others are music and paintings, "cloudberry jam from Lapland," a Shetland pony. This is work of power, precision and delicacy: poems that "bend and magnify the daylight," poems by a master craftsman. Winner of the DLR Poetry Now Award.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cecilia Valdés is arguably the most important novel of 19th century Cuba. Originally published in New York City in 1882, Cirilo Villaverde's novel has fascinated readers inside and outside Cuba since the late 19th century. In this new English translation, a vast landscape emerges of the moral, political, and sexual depravity caused by slavery and colonialism. Set in the Havana of the 1830s, the novel introduces us to Cecilia, a beautiful light-skinned mulatta, who is being pursued by the son of a Spanish slave trader, named Leonardo. Unbeknownst to the two, they are the children of the same father. Eventually Cecilia gives in to Leonardo's advances; she becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby girl. When Leonardo, who gets bored with Cecilia after a while, agrees to marry a white upper class woman, Cecilia vows revenge. A mulatto friend and suitor of hers kills Leonardo, and Cecilia is thrown into prison as an accessory to the crime. For the contemporary reader Helen Lane's masterful translation of Cecilia Valdés opens a new window into the intricate problems of race relations in Cuba and the Caribbean. There are the elite social circles of European and New World Whites, the rich culture of the free people of color, the class to which Cecilia herself belonged, and then the slaves, divided among themselves between those who were born in Africa and those who were born in the New World, and those who worked on the sugar plantation and those who worked in the households of the rich people in Havana. Cecilia Valdés thus presents a vast portrait of sexual, social, and racial oppression, and the lived experience of Spanish colonialism in Cuba.

Book excerpt: A mystical, whimsical romp through the universe and the Heavens for an answer to a question that cannot wait until tomorrow. Fraser. He's English, eight years old, and has a big question. One night in bed, he calculates distances between things, his house and his uncle's, his uncle's and London, and then on to the Moon, the nearest star, and beyond, until he experiences infinity. He sits up in bed riveted with this question: when you go all the way across the universe, what's on the other side of all the stars? As if on cue, the next morning, Elouesa, an angel assigned to him, starts to provide Fraser with an answer, but it's an answer that is an experience, and it will take him around an Earth he's never even suspected, out into the galaxy at so intimate a level he'll find his nose pressed against its very edge, and even beyond that, into the wild, mysterious, and very exciting universe. A host of characters will give Fraser bits of the answer along the way. Such as: Perflummery, the cosmic clown whose bag of marbles contains all the universes. The enigmatic Purplessence who flies him through the silent heart of the Quiddity. Panalon, the blue-starred dolphin and celestial cocktail party bon-vivant. And the Uncle Blaises, the angelic Marx Brothers of Heaven, joking, dancing, quipping, and always quoting from their unique book, The Angel's Guide to the World. It all comes pummeling back to Earth and "reality" when Fraser goes to school the next day and shows his classmates and teacher what's he learned. And he's lucky to have Uncle Arthur on hand, because he knows where Fraser's been, and with whom. And the question? Does Fraser get it answered? Indeed. But you'll have to read Fraser's Angel to find out what it is
