Angel Hill is a loner, mostly disregarded by her peers as a goody-goody. Her father is dying, and her family’s financial situation is in turmoil. Though they’ve attended the same schools, Isaiah never noticed Angel as anything but a dorky, Bible toting church girl. Then their English teacher offers them a job on her mobile library, a three-wheel, two-seater bike. Angel can’t turn down the money and Isaiah is soon eager to be in such close quarters with Angel every afternoon. But life changes on May 31, 1921 when a vicious white mob storms the Black community of Greenwood, leaving the town destroyed and thousands of residents displaced. Only then, Isaiah, Angel, and their peers realize who their real enemies are.

This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses how contemporary genre cinema represents trans-identified characters. Informed by key debates within transfeminism, queer theory, contemporary trans studies – and engaging with the concerns voiced by gender critical feminism – this culturally oriented book critiques the representation of trans characters in a range of cinematic genres, including the musical, period costume drama, the road movie, melodrama, coming-of-age stories, and romances. The case studies address the ways in which trans identifications have been coded within the narrative and stylistic expectations of the genres. Are genre films successful in affirming trans identifications or do they reinforce trans stereotypes and anti-trans discourses? This is a timely and accessible book, which addresses Anglophonic, European and Latin American cinemas, and is ideal for students studying courses in Film Studies, Media Studies, Cultural Studies or Gender Studies.

Book Synopsis East-West Literary Imagination by : Yoshinobu Hakutani
Download or read book East-West Literary Imagination written by Yoshinobu Hakutani and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study traces the shaping presence of cultural interactions, arguing that American literature has become a hybridization of Eastern and Western literary traditions. Cultural exchanges between the East and West began in the early decades of the nineteenth century as American transcendentalists explored Eastern philosophies and arts. Hakutani examines this influence through the works of Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman. He further demonstrates the East-West exchange through discussions of the interactions by modernists such as Yone Noguchi, Yeats, Pound, Camus, and Kerouac. Finally, he argues that African American literature, represented by Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, and James Emanuel, is postmodern. Their works exhibit their concerted efforts to abolish marginality and extend referentiality, exemplifying the postmodern East-West crossroads of cultures. A fuller understanding of their work is gained by situating them within this cultural conversation. The writings of Wright, for example, take on their full significance only when they are read, not as part of a national literature, but as an index to an evolving literature of cultural exchanges.

Book excerpt: This book examines the genesis and development of haiku in Japan and traces its impact on modernist poetics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of my poems were written because I was in the presence of angels. I would awaken in the middle of the night with a line of poetry in my head. I would then grab a pencil and pad and begin writing. The first time it happened I thought, Mmm, IaEUR(tm)ll jot that down tomorrow. When I awoke, I couldnaEUR(tm)t even remember the first word of the line much less anything else about it. After that happened, I got up and wrote all of what was on my mind. I would then fall back to sleep. Amazingly, in the morning I had very little need of corrections. Sometimes there were words that were unfamiliar to me. When I looked them up, they fit perfectly. This behavior continued through more than fifty poems. I also write when praying or observing a sunset I would have a line of poetry in my head which had to be recorded. Many times, on my way to work, I had to pull off the road to write down on a paper bag what I was thinking. This usually was when I was having a discussion with God. I have often said to friends when sharing my poetry, aEURoeI am only the messenger.aEUR My poems are messages to those who are suffering and suggestions on how to live a more fulfilling life. God is always available and will see you through any crisis. Trust Him for He loves us all.
