Book excerpt: Welcome to my inside flap. You know, most inside flaps in books try to sum up what the book's all about, and they usually have plenty of fancy terms like, "magically woven," or "packed with laughs," or "a triumph of the human spirit." And, of course, all of this is just a thinly veiled attempt to get you, the book browser, to buy the book. But not on my inside flap, no sir. I've got too many stories to tell, and I can't waste any space. So, with that in mind, here's a caption for the photograph of me on pages 58-59. I really enjoy a nice traditional Japanese steam bath. And so do my two lovely companions, Timori (left) and Masako. They're both flight attendants for a Japanese airline. And before you get any ideas, we're just friends. You know Tyra's the only one for me.

Book excerpt: Photographs of the wildest, weirdest and most interesting tattoos of the NBA, accompanied by firsthand accounts of what the tattoos mean and why they're there en years ago, Dennis Rodman was the only NBA player with tattoos worth mentioning and back then he was considered a freak. Now around 70% of the league is 'tatted out.' The game is played so fast that it's hard to tell what even the most obvious tattoos actually are. And some of the most interesting ones are hidden behind jerseys or under socks. Allen Iverson has more than two dozen tattoos-some you can see, some you can't. Some are obvious, like his nickname, 'the answer,' and some are cryptic like 'Jewelz,' or 'NBN.' What's on Stephon Marbury's forearm? What's covering Cherokee Parks' entire body? In the Paint takes you in the locker room and as close as you can get to the tattoos and the stories of the NBA.

Book excerpt: Are top scorers really the most valuable players? Are games decided in the final few minutes? Does the team with the best player usually win?Thinking Basketball challenges a number of common beliefs about the game by taking a deep dive into the patterns and history of the NBA. Explore how certain myths arose while using our own cognition as a window into the game's popular narratives. New basketball concepts are introduced, such as power plays, portability and why the best player shouldn't always shoot. Discover how the box score can be misleading, why "closers" are overrated and how the outcome of a game fundamentally alters our memory. Behavioral economics, traffic paradoxes and other metaphors highlight this thought-provoking insight into the NBA and our own thinking. A must-read for any basketball fan -- you'll never view the sport, and maybe the world, the same again.

Download or read book Memphis Hoops written by Keith Brian Wood and published by Sports & Popular Culture. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memphis Hoops tells the story of basketball in Tennessee's southwestern-most metropolis following the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Keith Brian Wood examines the city through the lens of the Memphis State University basketball team and its star player-turned-coach Larry Finch. Finch, a Memphis native and the first highly recruited black player signed by Memphis State, helped the team make the 1973 NCAA championship game in his senior year. In an era when colleges in the south began to integrate their basketball programs, the city of Memphis embraced its flagship university's shift toward including black players. Wood interjects the forgotten narrative of LeMoyne-Owen's (the city's HBCU) 1975 NCAA Division III National Championship team as a critical piece to understanding this era. Finch was drafted by the Lakers following the 1973 NCAA championship but instead signed with the American Basketball Association's Memphis Tams. After two years of playing professionally, Finch returned to the sidelines as a coach and would eventually become the head coach of the Memphis State Tigers. Wood deftly weaves together basketball and Memphis's fraught race relations during the post-civil rights era. While many Memphians viewed the 1973 Tigers' championship run as representative of racial progress, Memphis as a whole continued to be deeply divided on other issues of race and civil rights. And while Finch was championed as a symbol of the healing power of basketball that helped counteract the city's turbulence, many black players and coaches would discover that even its sports mirrored Memphis's racial divide. Today, as another native son of Memphis, Penny Hardaway, has taken the reigns of the University of Memphis's basketball program, Wood reflects on the question of progress in the city that saw King's assassination little more than forty years ago. In this important examination of sports and civil rights history, Wood summons social memory from an all-too-recent past to present the untold--and unfinished--story of basketball in the Bluff City.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The NBA according to The Sports Guy—now updated with fresh takes on LeBron, the Celtics, and more! From the age-old question of who actually won the rivalry between Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain to the one about which team was truly the best of all time, Simmons opens—and then closes, once and for all—every major pro basketball debate. Then he takes it further by completely reevaluating not only how NBA Hall of Fame inductees should be chosen but how the institution must be reshaped from the ground up, the result being the Pyramid: Simmons’s one-of-a-kind five-level shrine to the ninety-six greatest players in the history of pro basketball. And ultimately he takes fans to the heart of it all, as he uses a conversation with one NBA great to uncover that coveted thing: The Secret of Basketball.
