Book excerpt: The H.G. Wells classic that helped launch the time travel genre. The Time Traveller, a dreamer obsessed with traveling through time, builds himself a time machine and, much to his surprise, travels over 800,000 years into the future. He lands in the year 802701: the world has been transformed by a society living in apparent harmony and bliss, but as the Traveler stays in the future he discovers a hidden barbaric and depraved subterranean class. The Time Machine inspired the international bestseller The Map of Time by Félix J. Palma. As a gift to our readers, we are including the first three chapters of The Map of Time in this ebook edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insightful and essential new survey of Wyeth's entire career, situating the milestones of his art within the trajectory of 20th-century American life This major retrospective catalogue explores the impact of time and place on the work of beloved American painter Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009). While previous publications have mainly analyzed Wyeth's work thematically, this publication places him fully in the context of the long 20th century, tracing his creative development from World War I through the new millennium. Published to coincide with the centenary of Wyeth's birth, the book looks at four major chronological periods in the artist's career: Wyeth as a product of the interwar years, when he started to form his own "war memories" through military props and documentary photography he discovered in his father's art studio; the change from his "theatrical" pictures of the 1940s to his own visceral responses to the landscape around Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and his family's home in Mai≠ his sudden turn, in 1968, into the realm of erotic art, including a completely new assessment of Wyeth's "Helga pictures"--a series of secret, nude depictions of his neighbor Helga Testorf--within his career as a who≤ and his late, self-reflective works, which includes the discussion of his previously unknown painting entitled Goodbye, now believed to be Wyeth's last work.

He vowed never to use his time machine to change history, only to record history accurately. But a slip leads to a crime organization, the Outfit, chasing Aaron to get the machine. Despite Aaron using the machine to try to escape the Outfit, it ends up stealing the machine. The Outfit then forces Aaron to help it use the machine to radically change the Twentieth Century. The Outfit makes changes that allow the Axis powers to win World War II and take over most countries of the world. The Outfit does this so that it can control the rest of the world through the countries of Germany, Italy, and Japan. Even worse, in order for the world to get rid of the U.S.'s geopolitical competitors, the Outfit uses nuclear weapons to commit genocide in Russia and China. Russia and China cease to exist after the bombings. The Outfit ensures that it is the only entity with nuclear weapons. After making the changes, the Outfit locks Aaron away, keeping him alive only long enough to have him train them to use the machine. Aaron is the only person who knows how history should have happened, but he is a prisoner. Can he escape, correct history, and save the world?

Second only to these is the question of the infamous outlaw Robin Hood, with whom this book is concerned. Was Robin Hood a great outlaw who dispensed justice like some kind of Sherwood pharmaceutical or was he, perhaps, just a man with a bow who happened to be in the wrong place when the Sheriff of Nottingham went on a law and order drive? In this mediaeval romp, inspired by writers such as Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, we can promise that the answer to this question will be, if not answered, at least definitively ignored. Comedy, adventure and romance, all can be found within its pages (particularly if you use them to wrap up your valuable video collection).

She can't deny the embarrassment that she has failed and the fact that she's now trapped in the blue-collar town she so hoped to escape. But Laura soon finds that her sister, a fierce survivor of a childhood attack who has rather foolishly gotten pregnant, needs her help, and she unexpectedly finds love with a local guy. Even though the school offers to reinstate her scholarship leaving home again suddenly gets harder. She's torn between dreams of a new counter-cultural life and the undertow of a dysfunctional family. As the conflicts in her life threaten to drag her under, Laura grows agoraphobic. How can she reconcile her divided loyalties and find her genuine life?

"The best little boy in the world never had wet dreams or masturbated; he always topped his class, honored mom and dad, deferred to elders and excelled in sports . . . . The best little boy in the world was . . . the model IBM exec . . . The best little boy in the world was a closet case who 'never read anything about homosexuality.' . . . John Reid comes out slowly, hilariously, brilliantly. One reads this utterly honest account with the shock of recognition." The New York Times "The quality of this book is fantastic because it comes of equal parts honesty and logic and humor. It is far from being the story of a Gay crusader, nor is it the story of a closet queen. It is the story of a normal boy growing into maturity without managing to get raped into, or taunted because of, his homosexuality. . . . He is bright enough to be aware of his hangups and the reasons for them. And he writes well enough that he doesn't resort to sensationalism . . . ." San Francisco Bay Area Reporter

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1950s and early 1960s, the American film industry produced a distinct cycle of films situated on the boundary between horror and science fiction. Using the familiar imagery of science fiction--from alien invasions to biological mutation and space travel--the vast majority of these films subscribed to the effects and aesthetics of horror film, anticipating the dystopian turn of many science fiction films to come. Departing from projections of American technological awe and optimism, these films often evinced paranoia, unease, fear, shock, and disgust. Not only did these movies address technophobia and its psychological, social, and cultural corollaries; they also returned persistently to the military as a source of character, setting, and conflict. Commensurate with a state of perpetual mobilization, the US military comes across as an inescapable presence in American life. Regardless of their genre, Steffen Hantke argues that these films have long been understood as allegories of the Cold War. They register anxieties about two major issues of the time: atomic technologies, especially the testing and use of nuclear weapons, as well as communist aggression and/or subversion. Setting out to question, expand, and correct this critical argument, Hantke follows shifts and adjustments prompted by recent scholarly work into the technological, political, and social history of America in the 1950s. Based on this revised historical understanding, science fiction films appear in a new light as they reflect on the troubled memories of World War II, the emergence of the military-industrial complex, the postwar rewriting of the American landscape, and the relative insignificance of catastrophic nuclear war compared to America's involvement in postcolonial conflicts around the globe.
