Book excerpt: Excerpt from Andover, Massachusetts, in the World War Of the activities to which Mr. Eames referred, only a brief mention can be made in this preliminary summary. On Memorial Day, 1917, the town paid special honor to the veterans of the Civil War, who, more than half a century be fore, had represented Andover in another conflict. For the first time the Home Guard appeared in public review, the comment aroused by their marching being most favorable. In the Town Hall Dr. Claude M. Fuess delivered the oration, laying stress on the inspiration to be drawn from the notable example set by the soldiers of 1861. On June 14, under the auspices Of the Woman's Relief Corps, Flag Day was appropriately Observed, with an eloquent address by the Honorable John N. Cole. The Phillips Academy Commencement, always attended by many townspeople, was marked by the proud announcement Of Principal Stearns that an Andover Ambulance Unit was already overseas. On this occasion, too, a tall flagstaff was raised on the historic training field, where, a century and a half ago, the Andover militia were accustomed to drill, and where General George Washington, sitting on horseback, was welcomed in 1789 by the citizens Of the town. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the centennial of the First World War rapidly approaching, historian and bibliographer James T. Controvich offers in The United States in World War I: A Bibliographic Guide the most comprehensive, up-to-date reference bibliography yet published. Organized by subject, this bibliography includes the full range of sources: vintage publications of the time, books, pamphlets, periodical titles, theses, dissertations, and archival sources held by federal and state organizations, as well as those in public and private hands, including historical societies and museums. As Controvich’s bibliographic accounting makes clear, there were many facets of World War I that remain virtually unknown to this day. Throughout, Controvich’s bibliography tracks the primary sources that tell each of these stories—and many others besides—during this tense period in American history. Each entry lists the author, title, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, and page count as well as descriptive information concerning illustrations, plates, ports, maps, diagrams, and plans. The armed forces section carries additional information on rosters, awards, citations, and killed and wounded in action lists. The United States in World War I: A Bibliographic Guide is an ideal research tool for students and scholars of World War I and American history.

Book excerpt: Tragedy at Graignes tells the story of Captain Bud Sophian, the only US Army officer who did not flee Graignes, France, as the Waffen SS overran the American positions and stormed the village. Sophian was a surgeon, and he refused to abandon the fourteen wounded paratroopers in his care. He surrendered by waving a white flag at the door of the badly shelled Norman church where his aid station was located. He hoped for fair prisoner treatment in accordance with the Geneva Convention of 1929. The German troops instead committed unspeakable atrocities, leaving many of the American prisoners mutilated in grotesque heaps. All of the American prisoners, including Sophian, were killed. Captain Sophians judgment and actions in the US Army were the culmination of the rich and challenging life he led prior to the Second World War. Buds correspondence with his sister and other Sophian archival materials tell the story of this compelling life. These letters are reproduced verbatim in Tragedy at Graignes: The Bud Sophian Story so that Bud and other authors may speak directly to you and to the historical record.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They departed Boston in August 1861 to a cheering crowd and the tune of "John Brown's Body."? Though some of these Andover soldiers would not "see the elephant"? until two years later, more than a quarter of them would never return to their beloved hometown. Drawing on journals, letters and newspaper articles, Andover in the Civil War chronicles the journey of these brave men and brings to life the efforts of those who remained on the homefront. Harriet Beecher Stowe and Elizabeth Stuart Phelps were just two Andover citizens who threw themselves wholeheartedly into the Union cause. Lesser known but equally impressive was Robert Rollins, who migrated to Andover in 1863 and enlisted in the North's first all-black regiment. Historian Joan Silva Patrakis introduces many more patriotic characters and moving stories from this "Hill, Mill and Till"? town during the bloodiest years of America's history.
