Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “We have passed through the eye of the needle!” my father was fond of saying. And indeed we had. Now, after four years and four months of German occupation, we had survived. Neither morality nor faith had anything to do with our survival but survive we did. Money, sex and luck all had a hand in it. Germany, the most powerful nation in Europe, had decreed that all Jews were to be exterminated, not only the adults but especially the children. Once the children had been murdered, the “Jewish Question” would have been resolved once and for all. The Allied armies had finally swept through Belgium and liberated us after we had spent twenty-seven months in hiding. Our parents, Hilaire and Frieda Rosenberg went about trying to resume some semblance of family life; my sister Ruth and I would be going back to school after nearly three years of interrupted studies. It would take years for me to fathom the enormity of what we had been through, to understand why we did survive. Our parents were gamblers and people they knew through the Casinos hid us. Hilaire made large amounts of money in black-market dealings with the Germans so we could pay for the cupidity of those who would hide us. Frieda had an affair with an SS officer who warned us when we had to go into hiding. After attending the 1991 Conference of Hidden Children in New York City I knew that this unusual story of survival had to be written. Thus began a journey to a second liberation, an understanding that although they had been less than perfect parents, Hilaire and Frieda did all they humanly could do to ensure the survival of this nucleus of our family.

Book excerpt: We Survived - A True Story of Control and Mental and Physical Abuse immediately came to mind as a title for my book. I intended to draw attention to a problem that has been ignored or hidden for many years. Thankfully, people are more willing to discuss this issue today. I am constantly amazed at the number of people I speak with who admit to being abused in one way or another. When you grow up in a family that does not abuse, you are unaware of the many signals and are ashamed to say it happened to you. In writing this book, I hope to illustrate how manipulation works in your relationship without you realizing it. Most people are afraid to take steps to help themselves because they are too scared. This book covers the manners of manipulation, what to look for, what to avoid, and how to get help while you and your loved ones remain safe. It also lets you know that living in an uncontrolled atmosphere is possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The week after the attack on the World Trade Center, Joan Murray read her poem about it, "Survivors--Found," on National Public Radio. Thousands heard her poem and were so moved that they contacted her to ask for copies. In the wake of our nation's tragedy, poetry has taken on a new relevance in people's lives. As Dinitia Smith noted in The New York Times, "In the weeks since the terrorist attacks, people have been consoling themselves-and one another-with poetry in an almost unprecedented way." Poems to Live By features sixty of the finest poems by an international group of distinguished writers, including W. H. Auden, Czeslaw Milosz, Bertolt Brecht, Yehuda Amichai, Mary Oliver, Miguel de Unamuno, Gwendolyn Brooks, Billy Collins, Yusef Komunyakaa, and Sharon Olds. Agreeing with Kenneth Burke that literature is equipment for living, Murray has arranged the anthology in six sections that address our most urgent concerns: death and remembrance, fear and suffering, affirmations and rejoicings, warnings and instructions, war and rumors of war, meditations and conversations. Beginning with Faiz Ahmed Faiz's somber remembrance ('This is the way that autumn came to the trees: / it stripped them down to the skin') and concluding with D. H. Lawrence's simple and deep-felt "Pax," Poems to Live By addresses our need for wisdom in dark times, whether those times are personal or the ones we live through together.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Son of the Soil: Stone Obi’s The Tale of Dark Africa will open your eyes to the power of tradition and belief that exist within a people, a power that modern religion can’t totally wipe away. “I want people to see who we are,” writes the author. “We Africans have not detached from our folk’s way of thinking, and our ancestral conception has affected us into the 21st century as we continue to entertain such beliefs.” Part manifesto, part folk stories, Tale of Dark Africa explores the dark undertones of traditional African mythology and what issues its tenacious hold on Obi’s home country of Nigeria—and on Africa as a whole—may cause in the modern world. “Slavery, poverty, and wars are not the cause of our sufferings,” Obi writes. Instead, suffering comes from “the way we think and process information from a cultural and ancestral mentality.” In this way, the author seeks to draw the links between Africa’s suffering and the world’s. The tale of Dark Africa is the tale of the whole wide world.

Book excerpt: This book will take you along on my journey going through cancer, second hand. It offers insight, tips and inspiration to anyone going through the same, or similar struggles, as well as offering hope. I wrote this book as a tribute to my family of which I'm the "last one standing". I want to let others know that even though I'm the last one, I am indeed still standing and that speaks volumes. Together, cancer may bend us but never break us. We're all so much stronger than we know and braver than we even care to admit. Let my book be your guide. Together there is hope, there is strength and there is peace. Together, we can do this and still stand strong. Peace!

In those roles there are illusions of what men and women are as people. Because of these outdated, untrue concepts of gender, couples struggle with unhappiness and unhealthy dependency. The book takes a look at marriage today and askes why we can not see each other as equal. I look at how marriage existed in the past and why these patterns continue. There are still stifling assumptions today that keep illusions in marriage. I Include exercises to use as a couple to create new and healthier relationships. Then we can begin to see each other as equal people.

It contains snippets of my interactions with various people who have entered my life at different points of time and what lessons I have learned during my interactions with them and how they have shaped my personality and my belief system. Life for me is all about the experiences I have had and I have tried to put forth through this book the way I used the lessons learned in my personal and professional life in situations that I have encountered. The situations which I faced and the manner in which I handled them gave rise to some simple formulas which I have tried to put forth through this book to people who are interested in looking at life from a very simplistic nature. The book is a small effort from my side to put myself in front of the world and hopefully is a start in my literary life.

Book excerpt: This book offers new theoretical ground for thinking about, and transforming, leadership and higher education worldwide. Through an examination of the construct of intimacy and ‘nearness’, including emotional, spiritual, psychic, intellectual, and physical closeness, Jonathan Jansen demonstrates its power to influence positive leadership in young people. He argues that sensory leadership, which includes but extends beyond the power of touch, represents a fresh and effective approach to progressive transformation of long divided institutions. Considering richly textured narratives, chapters explore complex intimacies among Black and White university students in South Africa, post-apartheid and in the aftermath of a major racial atrocity. The stories reveal the students’ transformation in the process of ‘leadership for change’, interweaving concepts of racism, human relationships and intimacy, and in turn expanding the knowledge base of social and institutional improvement. This book explores how, when different kinds of nearness come together in leadership change, young people respond in ways that would not be possible through conventional instruments such as policy, legislation and the appeal to moral sensibilities alone. Leading for Change will be critical reading for academics, researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of education, educational justice, higher education, educational leadership and change, social and/or racial justice. This book will also be of interest to those working in the fields of anthropology, social psychology, and South African contemporary politics, policy and institutional practices.
