Book excerpt: The story of the civil rights movement is not simply the history of its major players but is also the stories of a host of lesser-known individuals whose actions were essential to the movement's successes. Duncan M. Gray Jr., an Episcopal priest who served various Mississippi parishes between 1953 and 1974, when he was elected bishop of Mississippi, is one of these individuals. And One Was a Priest is his remarkable story. From one perspective, Gray (b. 1926) would seem an unlikely spokesman for racial equality and reconciliation. He could have been content simply to become a member of the white, male Missisippi "club." Gray could have embraced a comfortable life and ignored the burning realities around him. But he chose instead to use his priesthood to speak in unpopular but prophetic support of justice and equality for African Americans. From his student days at the seminary at the University of the South, to his first church in Cleveland, Mississippi, and most famously to St. Peter's Parish in Oxford, where he confronted rioters in 1962, Gray steadfastly and fearlessly fought the status quo. He continued to work for racial reconciliation, inside and outside of the church, throughout his life. This biography tells not only Gray's story, but also reveals the times and people that helped make him. The author's question is "What makes a good person?" And One Was a Priest suggests there is much to learn from Gray's choices and his struggle.

Download or read book The Infant Priest written by Chad L. Bird and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems and hymns in this collection give voice to the triumphs and tragedies of life in a broken world. Here there is praise of the crucified and risen Christ, dark lamentation of a penitent wrestling with despair, meditations upon the life of our Lord, thanksgiving for the gift of family, and much more. Using the vivid and earthy language of the Scriptures themselves, Chad Bird crafts poetry by which believers who rejoice, weep, struggle, and hope can speak to God with honesty and fidelity.
Download or read book One written by Graham Priest and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graham Priest presents an original exploration of philosophical questions concerning the one and the many. He covers a wide range of issues in metaphysics—including unity, identity, grounding, mereology, universals, being, intentionality, and nothingness—and deploys the techniques of paraconsistent logic in order to offer a radically new treatment of unity. Priest brings together traditions of Western and Asian thought that are usually kept separate in academic philosophy: he draws on ideas from Plato, Heidegger, and Nagarjuna, among other philosophers.

Download or read book Aidan's Song written by Aidan Wilcoxson and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aidan of Lindisfarne was a hard-working bishop whom I love and why I call this journal Aidan's Song. What I hope to do with this journal is, every once in a while, catch a few lines of that music and hum along in praise of the One who has made me a priest and who is my rejoicing.' Thus Fr. Aidan Wilcoxson describes his purpose in this chronicle of a mostly ordinary year in the life of a superficially ordinary parish priest. But under that bumbling exterior beats a heart full of a contagious joy that spills over into these pages. For those who are curious how a priest spends his time, this book will be enlightening. For those who tend to get discouraged by the daily grind, it will be uplifting. And for all who love to sing to the Lord-literally or figuratively-Aidan's Song will definitely have you humming along in praise.
