Magna Graecia Since the practice of gem engraving antedated by many centuries the invention of the cognate glyptic art of die-cutting, it is probable that the improvements gradually evolved in implements and technique of the former, were speedily appropriated by workers in the sister branch. But in contrast to the hard, brittle stone which had to be laboriously engraved by the gemexpert, the material upon which the coin-artist exercised his skill was some soft, malleable metal, probably bronze. Its softness is shown by the facility with which dies seem to have been cut, and by the equal facility, unfortunately, with which they were injuriously affected by rough usage or action of the elements. There are many evidences of this peculiar liability to injury; such as, that no example of an ancient Greek coin-die has come down to us; that, in some otherwise well-preserved coins, there is a want of sharpness which can be only the result of a rapid wear of the die that we also frequently find in coins defects due to corrosion or fracture of their dies and that two coins from the same die so rarely appear that the few instances of such occurrence are always deemed worthy of note. Again, the many varieties of a single type from the hand of one artist, as well as certain issues of emergency show that ancient dies must have been produced with an ease and rapidity incomprehensible in our day, when the cutting of one die in the hardened steel may consume months. These old coin-engravers, however, from constant practice in this rapid production of dies doubtless acquired a wonderful facility; degenerating in some cases, it must be confessed, into carelessness and indifference. Bement, the owner of the coins here described, became very ill and now for many months has been unable to carry further whatever plans he may have had for the development of his already splendid collection of antique coins. This interruption is most unfortunate, considering his achievements in other fields, for Mr. Bement has long been prominent in a small group of Americans who find relaxation from their occupations in the pursuit of some branch of art or science and devote no inconsiderable amount of time, money, and industry to the collection of material illustrative of the subjects that claim their interest. Their enthusiasm and their collections have done much to develop our libraries, museums, art galleries, and other agents of public education. Mr. Bement's interest in books and prints resulted in the formation of one of the noted private libraries of the country. This library was disposed of several years ago, some of, the fine volumes passing through the hands of the late Mr. Harry Widener to Harvard University, while many rare prints went into the possession of a distinguished Philadelphia jurist. It was to minerals that Mr. Bement devoted the most of his leisure and the greatest care. His collection, purchased by the late Mr. J. Pierpont Morgan for the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, is rated "the finest ever made by a private individual." Its real value is not measured so much by the more than 12,000 superior specimens as by the scientific importance given it by the discriminating care of an industrious student of the subject, who "had a comprehensive knowledge of minerals, and was one of the most discerning and intelligent collectors that ever bought minerals." It has been only a few years since Mr. Bement became interested in coins. At first this interest extended to both ancient and modern coins, but the latter, including the American series, soon ceased to be attractive, because lacking historical or artistic values. He has therefore of late concentrated his attention on Greek and Roman coins, his collections of which grew rapidly. Studious and painstaking he has built up a collection of far greater value to science than its actual cost in money, a collection which should by some means pass into public ownership. We would like to know if Alexander the Great had his almost numberless mints working overtime for fun, just to give the Grecians something to look at but handle not. The very fact of the commonness of the Macedonian tetradrachms is itself conclusive evidence that the Greek coins saw hard circulation, and surely the large number of badly worn Greek silver coins of all classes which continually come to our notice verifies this. No valid excuse can be given by anybody for the nu couth and senseless aspect of our coins. We have St. Gaudens and Brenner and other die-sinkers of note, and all that stands between Americans and a beautiful coinage is the lack of a will on the part of the people, our congressmen and our senators to have it. Hasten the exit of the whimsical pastry-cook's eagle and Caucasian Indian If we must have Eagles and Indians on our coins we want the real things.
