He began working for a farmer at the age of nine to earn cast-off clothing as payment. Though he faced challenges, Sőren determined that his future was not preordained. Through hard work and tenacity, he thrived and found the love of his life. Stories of life in America that were filled with wonderful possibilities of owning land and truly being free were being spread throughout Denmark. With that vision, Sőren boarded the Borussia for America in 1863, with the promise that he would return for his betrothed, Dorthe Sophia. Life in this new country was not as easy as he had first envisioned. He arrived to find the United States in Civil War. In 1864, he joined the 15th Wisconsin Infantry for the Bounty of $300. Within 3 months, Sőren was captured by Confederate soldiers and thereafter faced unimaginable hardships and privations. Imprisonment at Andersonville, Charleston, Florence Stockade and Charlotte prisoner of war camps tested his character and fortitude. His future seemed doubtful ... " --
