Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Mountain Press started the Roadside Geology series forty years ago, southern Californians have been waiting for an RG of their own. During those four decadeswhich were punctuated by jarring earthquakes and landslidesgeologists continued to unravel the complexity of the Golden State, where some of the most dramatic and diverse geology in the world erupts, crashes, and collides. With dazzling color maps, diagrams, and photographs, Roadside Geology of Southern California takes advantage of this newfound knowledge, combining the latest science with accessible stories about the rocks and landscapes visible from winding two-lane byways as well as from the regions vast network of highways. Join Arthur Sylvester, an award-winning UC Santa Barbara geologist, and Elizabeth OBlack Gans, a geologist-illustrator, as they motor through mountains and deserts to explore the iconic features of the SoCal landscape, from boulder piles in Joshua Tree National Park and brilliant white dunes in the Channel Islands to tar seeps along the rugged coast and youthful cinder cones in the Mojave Desert. Whether you want to find precious gemstones, ponder the mysteries of the Salton Sea, or straddle the boundary between the North American and Pacific Plates, be sure to bring this book along as your tour guide.

Book Synopsis The Story of Big Creek by : David H. Redinger
Download or read book The Story of Big Creek written by David H. Redinger and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature never intended Southern California to be anything but desert, so they said. But settlers turned it into farms, factories and living areas for millions of people. The key to that development was 300 miles north, in the High Sierra, where the company that became the Southern California Edison Company undertook the creation of one of the great water power developments in the world. They called it Big Creek. Completed in 1929, this work of engineering art involved six dams, eight tunnels (one 13 miles long), three major artificial lakes and five powerhouses—all created to ensure electric power for a rapidly growing Los Angeles and suburbs. Author David H. Redinger was Resident Engineer for the Big Creek Hydroelectric Project, one of the most extensive in the world. In this fascinating book, he recounts the obstacles encountered in building a railroad in the High Sierra, from carving roads and tunnels through rough terrain, to enduring snowstorms at high altitudes, and generally accomplishing near-miracles with brainpower, mulepower, steampower, and manpower.

Download or read book Sagalassos I written by Marc Waelkens and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sagalassos, once the metropolis of the Western Taurus range (Pisidia, Turkey), was only thoroughly surveyed in 1884 and 1885 by an Austrian team directed by K. Lanckoronski. In 1986-1989 this work was resumed by a British-Belgian team co-directed by Dr. Stephen Mitchell (University College of Swansea) and by Prof. Dr. Marc Waelkens (Catholic University of Leuven). In 1990 Sagalassos became a full scale Belgian project and a leading center for interdisciplinary archaeological and archaeometrical research. Due to its altitude, the site is one of the best preserved towns from classical antiquity, with a rich architectural and sculptural tradition dating from the second century BC to the sixth century AD. From early Imperial times until the early Byzantine period a complete range of coarse and red slip wares was produced locally. Excavations are concentrated on the upper and lower agoras to document the political and commercial life in the town and also in the area where a late Hellenistic fountain house, which still functions to date, and a Roman library were discovered. Major efforts are undertaken to restore the excavated monuments in their old glory. Several disciplines integrate the town again within its ancient environment and document the central role which Sagalassos played in the area.
