Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology: An Elementary Text-Book of Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene From a considerable experience with both very elementary and more advanced classes, the author has been led to certain con elusions in regard to the teaching of elementary physiology and hygiene. It is not proposed to enter here into a discussion of the correctness of these conclusions, but a brief statement of a few principles that seem fundamental may perhaps be allowable. The chief object of teaching physiology in the public schools is to train the pupils to keep their bodies in health. The mere teaching of anatomy and physiology will not accomplish this, for the pupil cannot master the structure and workings of the body in a way that will enable him to frame the laws of health and apply them. Neither can the desired end be reached by teach ing rules of health without an anatomical and physiological basis; for without such a basis, hygiene is an intangible and an elusive subject. The author has therefore concluded that a conservative middle course is wiser than either of the extremes of method mentioned above. An elementary text in physiology should be a balanced text, containing sufficient anatomy to make clear the broader outlines of the structure of the human body, enough physiology to make plain the great laws according to which the body lives, and a full discussion of how a violation of these laws may be avoided. For the introduction of certain new matter, as, for example, the cell idea, the work of enzymes, and matter relating to germ diseases, there is little need for explanation. The groundwork of physiology and pathology has in recent years so shifted and extended itself, that the subject-matter of an elementary course must to a considerable extent be altered if it is to furnish 3. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene for High Schools In no branch of education is this connection between knowledge and conduct or welfare more direct than in that which deals with the study of our own bodies, and of the laws and practices which must be observed in order to maintain a condition of health and activity in these bodies that is, the study of physiology and hygiene. For upon the Observation of these rules of hygiene depends the preservation of health, a first essential for usefulness as well as enjoyment in life. He can best and most intelligently observe these laws who is familiar with and understands the facts from which they are deduced, the phenomena of physiology. This study should therefore be a part of the education of each and all of us. It should be taken up in youth, for it is during this period that the organs and tissues of the body, the frame, the heart, the brain, are growing and taking on the character which they keep throughout life, and that the practices and habits which are the most deep seated and fundamental are forming. The health and character then acquired often prove the bed rock of the Whole physical, mental, and moral development. The errors committed then are often irreparable, and it is the province of our educational systems to insure that at least these errors shall not be committed through Ignorance. In preparing a text book for this purpose of general education in the schools, the point to be kept most In mind IS the unity of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book on Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene, for Grammar Schools and Families: With Eighty-Three Engravings To the teacher we would suggest the propriety of calling on a pupil of the class, to describe the anatomy of an organ from an anatomical outline plate; after wards call upon another to give the physiology of the part, while a third may state the hygiene; after which, the questions at the bottom of the page may be asked promiscuously, and thus the detailed know ledge which each pupil possesses of the subject will be tested. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arnold's Lectures on Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene, and Disease, Its Cause, Prevention, and Cure This book is intended to give the careful reader a thorough knowledge of himself, physically and mentally; in a healthy and in an unhealthy condition; and how to preserve him in the former condition or to bring him safelv out of the latter. The idea is fast passing away, that a knowledge of the Human svstem, and the laws that govern it under different circumstances, should be kept from the general reader, and confined to the pro fessional man. A study of the human body, either healthy or diseased, is a proper study for every one; and not only a proper, but a very essential study, really of more importance to our wel fare than any other. For what enjoyment can one have in this world, without health And in order to enjoy good health it is absolutely necessary to have a knowledge of the human system. Book excerpt: A Treatise on Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene (Revised Edition) by Calvin Cutter Agesilaus, king of Sparta, when asked what things boys should learn, replied, "Those which they will practise when they become men." As health requires the observance of the laws inherent to the different organs of the human system, so not only boys, but girls, should acquire a knowledge of the laws of their organization. If sound morality depends upon the inculcation of correct principles in youth, equally so does a sound physical system depend on a correct physical education during the same period of life. If the teacher and parents who are deficient in moral feelings and sentiments, are unfit to communicate to children and youth those high moral principles demanded by the nature of man, so are they equally incompetent directors of the physical training of the youthful system, if ignorant of the organic laws and the physiological conditions upon which health and disease depend. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing need be said concerning the importance of the study of good health. The first lesson that a child should learn is the law of his being. Hitherto the aim has been mainly to train the mind regardless of the requirements of the body. The vital connection of the two has been ignored with a persistency little short of criminality. Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene have their places in the curriculum of our leading schools, but the knowledge too often is simply technical and without practical results. What greater travesty than to listen to a glib discourse on nutrition, digestion, circulation, respiration, the muscles, nerves, bones or brain by a pupil with thin chest, lack-lustre eye, sallow complexion, and weak frame? With no wish to slight the value of a thorough knowledge of Physiology, this little volume seeks to 6give the fundamental laws of health, in such simple language that every boy and girl advanced enough to read, can understand them. Accompanied and supplemented by the earnest words of the teacher, who shall estimate the good that may be accomplished? In the preparation of these pages, the author is glad to acknowledge the valuable assistance received from C. Shepherd, M.D., Superintendent for many years of Public Schools, Trenton, N. J., and Washington Hasbrouck, Ph.D., Principal of the New Jersey State Normal School.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Anatomy and Physiology for Nurses IN the composition of this book the writer has been guided by his own needs and influenced by the following reflections. The field of Anatomy and Physiology is too large to be treated adequately in a textbook of less than several volumes. No nurse can or need become acquainted with the Whole field, but she should know pretty well those parts which border on her own experience. The training school may then with propriety seek to make the nurse thoroughly famil iar with a very few fundamental and typical phenomena such as may be presented in a little book, and furthermore it should encourage her to work up her cases from the larger reference books just as the doctor does, although of course in much less detail and from a somewhat different stand point. If she has thoroughly grasped the rudiments of the subject, this procedure will be an easy and pleasant one. This is no new-fangled notion, for the case method of teaching law and medical students is an old story. The case method has among other advantages this very obvious one, that the facts acquired in this way are a much more permanent acquisition than is the case when they are served cold, so to speak, in a lesson book.
