Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The title of this book may not unnaturally provoke suspicion. After all, howsoever we define it, socialism is a modern thing, and dependent almost wholly on modern conditions. It is an economic theory which has been evolved under pressure of circumstances which are admittedly of no very long standing. How then, it may be asked, is it possible to find any real correspondence between theories of old time and those which have grown out of present-day conditions of life? Surely whatever analogy may be drawn between them must be based on likenesses which cannot be more than superficial."First published in 1913. Includes chapters on Social Conditions, the Communists, the Schoolmen, the Lawyers, the Social Reformers and the Theory of Alms-Giving.

Book excerpt: "Mr. Matthew Arnold, like other good men of our times, disliked the idea of being made the subject of a regular biography; and the only official and authoritative sources of information as to the details of his life are the Letters published by his family, under the editorship of Mr. G. W.E. Russell (2 vols., London, 1895). To these, therefore, it seems to be a duty to confine oneself, as far as such details are concerned, save as regards a very few additional facts which are public property."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annie Besant brings readers on a journey through the planes of existence, explaining the interplay of the physical reality we perceive and the spiritual planes beyond our perception. By quoting ancient documents of Buddhism and Taoism, Besant describes the composition and processes of the mysterious worlds beyond what we see and hear in everyday life. The divine wisdom of Theosophy includes doctrines from multiple ancient religions, such as those of Egypt, India, Tibet and Eastern Asia. In the eyes of the theosophist, each of these contributes truths to the phenomena of the physical, astral and mental planes which are explored by Besant. Philosophical concepts of the Self, the soul, the afterlife, and reincarnation receive attention in the later stages of this book, which also explains the links between the planes and concepts such as the Buddha realms and Nirvana. Besant keenly summarizes and describes the major facets of theosophy, whilst praising the movement's founder H. P. Blavatsky. Throughout this text, Besant's gifts for explanation and descriptive writing demystify spiritual mysteries and ideas that would otherwise be hard to comprehend. For years a leading proponent of the theosophic movement, Annie Besant published several books and delivered lectures in the early 20th century.

Book excerpt: Just before the turn of the century, a renegade Russian aristocrat named Madame Blavatsky came to America claiming that man was descended not from the ape but from spiritual beings. Thus began Theosophy, the very first "new age" religion. This thought-provoking and often hilarious study delineates the course of Theosophy and other sects which have come down through the years. These questions are as relevant today as they were nearly a century ago when author Annie Besant first addressed them in The Basis of Morality. Whether you are an ardent believer or a hard-nosed skeptic, the age-old relationship between religion and morality is a fascinating one to ponder.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1979. Elisée Reclus was an important anarchist theorist whose contribution to the radical direction which the European anarchist movement assumed in the late nineteenth century, has been largely neglected by scholars. This study of his thought provides a basis for a general re-assessment of European anarchism, by contributing to an understanding of important dimensions of theory and practice, which previously have not been well understood. Amongst the aspects examined are the anarchist conception of the state, the nature of oppression and revolution and the role of violence and terrorism. One of the revealing and fundamental themes of this examination, is that the social and political theory of Elisée Reclus was the product of interaction of utopianism and science, two strands of thought frequently taken to be mutually exclusive. For Reclus the use of the scientific method served to strengthen his concept of Utopia, rendering it part of the real world. Within this context of utopianism and science, it can be seen that Reclus' legendary benevolence, and his justification of violence are logically consistent, both deriving from his all-embracing social and political theory. This work presents a challenging approach to many widely held views about the nature of anarchism, particularly regarding its relationship to socialism.

Book excerpt: The French Materialists of the 18th century while waging relentless war against all the "infâmes" whose yoke weighed upon the French of this period, by no means scorned the search after what they called "perfect legislation," i. e., the best of all possible legislations, such legislation as should secure to "human beings" the greatest sum of happiness, and could be alike applicable to all existing societies, for the simple reason that it was "perfect" and therefore the most "natural."

Book excerpt: The author of this long and detailed account of the investigations into the Haymarket case was a member of the police force and a colleague of Inspector Bonfield, the police officer who led the police into the crowd at Haymarket on May 4, 1886. The book, which was widely distributed at the time, included many documents from the case, descriptions of testimony at trial, and many drawings of people and incidents. The author, Michael Schaack, and Inspector Bonfield were subsequently dismissed from the Chicago Police after an investigation for corruption. Subsequent investigations of the trial uncovered perjured testimony by police witnesses and others, and jury rigging by the prosecution.

Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. In a series of ten essays and a generous selection of illustrations, many in color, this volume depicts and assesses the mind and art of Victorian England. Multidisciplinary in approach, the essays deal with a variety of aspects in the history of the Victorian age. Professor Altholz, the volume editor, writes: "It was an age not of revolution but of reform; political reform which admitted first the middle and then the working classes to the dominant share of the suffrage; economic and social reforms which proclaimed the triumph of laissez-faire while laying the foundations of the welfare state; moral reforms attempted if not achieved through education and religious revival; aesthetic reforms proposed if not achieved and, even in their failure, adding to the richness and diversity of Victorian England. It was an age whose problems cried out for reform; and, despite the prevailing complacency, virtually all the great Victorians were critics of their age. Their criticisms were diverse and often mutually incompatible, with each other -- and their public -- but they shared a high seriousness which gave character and substance to the flowering of their culture. Such was the Victorian age: the high-water mark of English history, the maturation of British culture, and the seedbed of our problems and our discontents." The illustrations include color reproductions of some of the works discussed by Melvin Waldfogel in his essay "Narrative Painting," and a selection of architectural engravings and photographs.

Book excerpt: Anarchism is a political philosophy and movement that is skeptical of all justifications for authority and seeks to abolish the institutions it claims maintain unnecessary coercion and hierarchy, typically including, though not necessarily limited to, governments, nation states, and capitalism. Anarchism advocates for the replacement of the state with stateless societies or other forms of free associations. As a historically left-wing movement, this reading of anarchism is placed on the farthest left of the political spectrum, it is usually described as the libertarian wing of the socialist movement (libertarian socialism).
