Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Allow me to introduce myself." But he needed no introduction. "Anansi the spider!" said Anansi the boy. "The tales were true!" "Traditional tales are always true," the spider answered, laughing. "Nothing lasts so long as truth, nor travels quite so far." Now in paperback! Award-winning author of Ghana Must Go, Taiye Selasi, reimagines the story of Anansi, the much-loved trickster, for a new generation. Kweku has grown up hearing stories about the mischievous spider Anansi. He is given the nickname Anansi by his father because of his similarly cheeky ways. On a holiday to visit his beloved Grandma in Ghana, Anansi the spider and Anansi the boy meet, and discover a magical pot that can be filled with whatever they want. Anansi fills it again and again with his favourite red-red stew, and eats so much that he feels sick. Will he learn to share this wonderful gift? This charming retelling of a West African story teaches readers about the dangers of greed, and the importance of being kind. Tinuke Fagborun's colourful illustrations bring the magic and wonder of the tale to life. When you've finished sharing the story, you can also find out more about the origins of Anansi folktales. This beautiful storybook is one that children will treasure forever.

Book excerpt: LANGUAGE ARTS / CREATIVE WRITING / FOLKLORE Books for Growing Minds(tm) is very pleased to present "ANANSI is ANANSE!" in celebration of the story's completed translations in French, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese for the year 2015. Now available on full-color paper for this "7th Edition Celebration" only, this delightful interactive folktale-drama (story) will now engage readers and all who have gathered around for the telling of this tale in four major world languages! Initially written by the author and published as Ananse Makes It So! (Why Spiders Hide In Corners) in a Simon and Schuster bestselling anthology on African and African American storytelling, this story has met much success and has been favored by children's librarians, university-level Drama and Literature classes and children's theater. The illustrations (photographed plates for this edition) were done by artist-nutritionist Verena Durrmeier. She perfectly renders the author's idea of depicting "non-threatening looking, cute, dancing spiders that even arachnophobes would not mind reading about." ANANSI is ANANSE! is an engaging "let's do" story that promises to be interactive fun for all.Back Cover. Author's Photo Credit: John Zeuli Photography.~Books for Growing Minds(tm)SUMMARY: Rabbit decides to visit his friend, Anansi-the-Spider, whom he hasn't seen in quite a while. Wanting to celebrate their seemingly forever friendship, Rabbit invites Anansi to join him in making a drum. From his cozy hammock, Anansi refuses with excuses of being too sick to get involved with drum-making. Alone, Rabbit works hard at making his "friendship" drum. While Rabbit is resting from the day's hard work at drum-making, he soon finds Anansi playing his drum, the very same drum he was supposedly "too sick" to help make. Anansi ends up in an embarrassing situation, one that we all may come face to face with from time to time.ABOUT THE AUTHORA native of Philadelphia (PA), J'miah Nabawi's storytelling career was inspired by the legendary Mandinka Griot (Djeli), Djeliba Djimo Kouyate. Book excerpt: LANGUAGE ARTS / CREATIVE WRITING / FOLKLOREBooks for Growing Minds(TM) introduces ANANSI is ANANSE! A 7th Edition Celebration in 7" x 10" size and with color pages, decidedly more suitable for university, schools and public libraries. Like its pocket size edition, this delightful interactive folktale-drama (story) will engage both the reader and all whom have gathered around for the telling of this tale. Initially written by the author and published in a Simon and Schuster Anthology of African and African American storytelling, "Why Spiders Hide in Corners/Ananse Makes It So!" is now in its 7th edition and titled as "Anansi is Ananse!" This edition celebrates KWAKU ANANSE, a.k.a Anansi the Spider-Man and the longevity of the author's telling of this tale. "A 7th Edition Celebration" also celebrates the author's recent translations (June 2015) of the story into three major world languages, French, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. ANANSI is ANANSE! continues with our mission to publish folktales, stories and authors promoting the preservation of "oral literature" that encourages family time, wellness and meaningful play. Through our publications, Books for Growing Minds(tm) is dedicated to supporting family literacy, healthy social interaction and wellness through the art of storytelling. Anansi is Ananse! is a folktale-dance-musical drama that has been met with much success. It has been favored by children's librarians, university-level Drama and Literature classes, and children's theater. A middle school in South Carolina (USA) has begun dramatizing Anansi is Ananse! into a "FOLKTALE-POP-OPERA!" This celebration continues with the finding of files of the original illustrations that were presumed lost after not having them for 15 years. They were "rediscovered" in the files of a local copying center when the author visited for something else. The images of those original drawings done by Nutritionist-Artist, Verena Durrmeier, now grace the pages of this book in lively black and white fashion. "Ms. Durrmeier perfectly illustrated my idea of having cute, animated, friendly (and choreographed) spiders that even arachnophobes would not mind reading about," says the author. ANANSI is ANANSE! is a "let's do" story that promises to be fun for all. Enjoy! ~ Books for Growing Minds(TM)"ANANSI is ANANSE! is one, powerful, little book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historic Hope lands located on the Liguanea Plain in the southeastern parish of St Andrew, Jamaica, and once the site of one of the island?s earliest sugar estates, has had a long history of human settlements dating back to approximately 600 CE, the era of the indigenous Tainos. It was not until 1655, however, with the English invasion and seizure of Jamaica from the Spanish, that the Hope landscape developed into a thriving rural agrarian settlement. Generous land grants were made to the invading officers and later to immigrants from Britain and North America and from other Caribbean islands. Major Richard Hope came in possession of over 2,600 acres in the Liguanea Plain. Major Hope, unlike many of his counterparts by the 1660s, managed to establish a small sugar plantation, which developed by the mid-1700s into one of the island?s largest, most productive and technologically advanced slave sugar estates. In the 1770s the estate became the property of the Duke of Chandos and his family until 1848, when the estate was dismantled. Over 600 acres were sold to the Kingston and Liguanea Water Works Company and the remaining 1,700 acres were leased to the owner of the adjoining Papine and Mona estates. Poor accounting and border surveillance enabled several persons to possess the land, which was later sanctioned by the Limitations of Actions Law. With the government?s acquisition of the entire property in 1909, the Hope estate underwent remarkable changes in the twentieth century. By 1960 the Hope landscape was radically transformed from a sugar estate worked by hundreds of enslaved black people to a premiere urban centre of commercial, residential and educational land use.
