Book excerpt: Automated devices can potentially measure the processes as well as results of armor crew performance. This research analyzed a sample of three tank gunnery engagements in order to (1) identify the stimuli and overt responses in a sample of gunnery tasks; (2) identify and rank-order the response groups, overt responses, and enabling skills for each duty position in the sample engagements; and (3) write prototype measurement specifications for a sample of those response groups, overt responses, and enabling skills. The decisions and overt responses of each crew member for the sampled tasks were displayed in several sets of flow diagrams. Methods for sorting overt responses into groups and for inferring enabling skills were based on three considerations: perception of initiating stimuli, recall of procedures or rules, and motor behavior. These methods yielded a four-tiered behavior hierarchy for each duty position for each engagement. Measures of crewmen's performance at all levels of the hierarchy would permit (a) troubleshooting performance sequences by backtracking scores top to bottom through the hierarchy; (b) testing sequentially from bottom to top; and (c) predicting performance in higher instructional units from scores on lower units. Measurement specifications were written for the response groups, overt responses, and enabling skills in a main gun precision engagement.

Book excerpt: "Based on the analysis of gunnery scores fired by 171 M1A2 tank crews, an easy-to-use strategy was developed for predicting which crews will, and will not, first-run qualify on Tank Table VIII before all of the typically required ten engagements have been fired. Scores are added as each engagement is fired and the resulting sum is compared to tabular formatted cutoff scores established to support accurate qualification predictions. Adherence to this strategy will help Active Army armor unit commanders to maximize the efficiency of tank gunnery evaluation by reducing the number of first-run engagements fired, as well as the range time and operational tempo (OPTEMPO) resources spent in doing so, by roughly 20% without sacrificing the purpose and intent of the crew-level gunnery certification process."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: To assess performance on individual Table VIII gunnery engagements, the first run scores of 109 tank crews from three U.S. Army National Guard (ARNG) armor battalions were averaged and then ordinarily ranked for difficulty. For all three battalions, three of the four engagements found to have the lowest average scores (highest difficulty rankings) required machine gun (coax or Caliber .50) employment either alone or in combination with the main gun. In the remaining engagement of this foursome, crews were required to fire at multiple targets with the main gun using the gunner's auxiliary sight. Two of the three engagements found to have the highest average scores (lowest difficulty rankings) involved presentation of only a single target. These results can be used by ARNG armor trainers to help maximize the payoff from their training time investment by focusing on the engagements found to be the most difficult, thereby enhancing the probability of first-run crew qualification on Table VIII. Reserve component, Armor training, Tank gunnery, Table VIII.

Researchers from 10 countries have contributed chapters that represent developments specific to their regions and that illustrate the way ideas spread around the world. Some principles of effective teaming were independently discovered in different countries, and some principles emerged from the work of researchers like Trist, Emery, and Lewin and spread around the world. But all of the practices were driven by the dynamic tension between the psychology of the employee and business necessities. Theories and cases describe autonomous work groups, self-managed work teams, cell teams, and other collaborative work structures. Contributions to the design of such structures came from psychology, management, sociology, industrial engineering, and manufacturing. Because of the challenges inherent in reorganising work around teams instead of individuals, organizations are at different stages in evolving into 21st century work systems.

Book excerpt: This thesis studies various engagement strategies for the Bradley Fighting Vehicle's 25-mm automatic gun firing APDS-T ammunition against a BMP- type target. The Army currently provides only the broadest guidance for the structure of the 25-mm point target engagement which results in the employment of an assortment of strategies throughout the Bradley community. The goal of this research was to determine if a best method exists. Bradley gunnery is a complex set commander/gunner interactions which can be difficult to represent with the analytic models commonly found in the literature. A model, based on the simulation methods used by the US Army Material Systems Analysis Activity (AMSAA), was developed to simulate the gunnery process in order to analyze the effects of firing a set pattern of single sensing rounds and multiple round bursts for the purpose of 'killing', the target. Analysis of variance techniques were used to characterize the effects of engagement strategies, precision and battlesight firing modes, and the burst on target (BOT) direct fire adjustment technique on the simulated Bradley gunnery process. Based on these results, conclusions and recommendations concerning the structure of the 25-mm point target engagement are discussed ... Bradley fighting vehicle, Gunnery, 25-mm APDS-T, Ballistics.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Threat-based tank gunnery performance testing procedures were developed using a seven-step process that included (a) describing the tank gunnery domain, (b) determining several test requirements, (c) analyzing gunnery outcome (speed and accuracy) measures and developing a recommended approach, (d) analyzing gunnery process measures (e.g., target acquisition, fire commands) and developing a recommended approach, (e) setting standards, (f) analyzing devices and making recommendations, and (g) developing test administration procedures. The test comprises (a) crew and platoon skill echelons, (b) Combat Tank Tables and threat-based target arrays, and (c) live fire and instrumented dry fire. After reviewing several alternatives, the hit expectation ratio metric that underlies Tank Table VIII was identified as the most conceptually complete outcome metric available. A spreadsheet format was prepared for extending the calculation of hit expectation ratio for crew gunnery for three, four, and five threat targets in an array. The mathematics of a suggested solution for calculating a platoon gunnery hit expectation ratio were presented. To support assessment of the behaviors and activities of crew and platoon gunnery, a series of descriptive rating scales were developed.

Book excerpt: Training simulators, developed to ease the burden on resources and to provide low-cost alternatives, must be field tested prior to their use. This report describes the field trials of the Perceptronics MK60, a part-task tank gunnery simulator which through computer control (1) presents target engagements recorded on a videodisc, (2) enables students to operate switches and controls, track and fire, and (3) provides feedback about their performance. The purpose of the field trials was to assess, in an institutional setting (1) the training effectiveness of the MK60 for teaching gunnery skills, (2) the transfer of that training to M60A1 tank performance, (3) the validity of the MK60 for predicting M60A1 performance of individual soldiers, and (4) the opinions of students and instructors. Field trials were conducted with Armor Officer Basic students and with enlisted students in basic Armor Training. Two intensities of simulator training were compared to the normal programs of instruction. Results indicated that (1) performance on the simulator increased as a direct function of practice time, with improvements in speed of achieving target hits and in consistency of gunner verbal respones; (2) transfer of training from the MK60 to dry fire and live fire on the M60A1 tank appeared equal to that of the devices currently used in gunnery training; (3) the MK60 was not predictive of individual soldiers' M60A1 performance; and (4) students and instructors found the simulator challenging, realistic and they were very favorable toward its use. Book excerpt: This report briefly reviews the methods used in developing a model test of tank crew marksmanship and presents the detailed task analysis data base developed in the course of that effort. Descriptions are included of 266 job objectives that represent all of the ways an M60A1AOS tank is capable of engaging a threat target under current doctrine. Each objective is described in terms of the conditions of the engagement and the precise behaviors which each crew member must perform. The objectives are organized into clusters which are homogeneous in content, thus facilitating the use of the data base for development of training programs, design and evaluation of training devices, and test development. Also included are computing algorithms and program listings for measuring certain characteristics of engagements, including behavioral generalizability (the extent to which performance on one specific engagement may predict performance on others) and behavioral coverage (the extent to which all possible tank crew behaviors are represented by a subset of engagements).

Book excerpt: The Tank Gunnery and Missile Tracking System (TGMTS) was evaluated as a device for measuring tank gunnery performance. To enhance its performance assessment capabilities, the TGMTS was paired with a microcomputer. The computer-augmented TGMTS was used in assessing the performance of 18 M60A3 tank commander-gunner pairs on 27 gunnery engagements. The computer-augmented TGMTS arrangement permitted precise measurement of tank commander and gunner behaviors in engaging realistic threat targets. Potential users for the TGMTS in assessing gunner performance are discussed including gunnery qualification, personnel assignment, diagnostic testing, and evaluation of gunnery training programs.
