Book excerpt: The historical books of the New Testament, such as the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, provide us with several lessons on labor education. Here are some key lessons that can be drawn from these texts: 1. value of work: the historical books of the New Testament emphasize the importance of work and stress that it is an essential part of life. Jesus himself was a carpenter, which shows that work is worthy and valuable regardless of its nature. 2. Humility in work: The historical books also teach the importance of humility in work. Jesus, despite being considered the Son of God, did not hesitate to carry out humble and helpful work, such as washing the feet of his disciples. This teaches us that we should not look down on any work and that humility is essential in our work attitude. 3. Integrity and honesty: The historical books of the New Testament teach us the importance of integrity and honesty in our work. The early Christians, like the apostles, were faithful to their mission and worked with honesty and dedication, even in difficult or adverse circumstances. This reminds us to be of integrity and honesty in all our work tasks and responsibilities. 4. Care and respect for others: The historical books also teach us to have care and respect for others in our work. Jesus emphasized the importance of loving and helping others, and the early Christians showed this attitude by working collaboratively and helping each other. This reminds us of the importance of building respectful, kind and caring relationships in the work environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, reception history has become an increasingly important and controversial topic of discussion in biblical studies. Rather than attempting to recover the original meaning of biblical texts, reception history focuses on exploring the history of interpretation. In doing so it locates the dominant historical-critical scholarly paradigm within the history of interpretation, rather than over and above it. At the same time, the breadth of material and hermeneutical issues that reception history engages with questions any narrow understanding of the history of the Bible and its effects on faith communities. The challenge that reception history faces is to explore tradition without either reducing its meaning to what faith communities think is important, or merely offering anthologies of interesting historical interpretations. This major new handbook addresses these matters by presenting reception history as an enterprise (not a method) that questions and understands tradition afresh. The Oxford Handbook of the Reception History of the Bible consciously allows for the interplay of the traditional and the new through a two-part structure. Part I comprises a set of essays surveying the outline, form, and content of twelve key biblical books that have been influential in the history of interpretation. Part II offers a series of in-depth case studies of the interpretation of particular key biblical passages or books with due regard for the specificity of their social, cultural or aesthetic context. These case studies span two millennia of interpretation by readers with widely differing perspectives. Some are at the level of a group response (from Gnostic readings of Genesis, to Post-Holocaust Jewish interpretations of Job); others examine individual approaches to texts (such as Augustine and Pelagius on Romans, or Gandhi on the Sermon on the Mount). Several chapters examine historical moments, such as the 1860 debate over Genesis and evolution, while others look to wider themes such as non-violence or millenarianism. Further chapters study in detail the works of popular figures who have used the Bible to provide inspiration for their creativity, from Dante and Handel, to Bob Dylan and Dan Brown.

Book excerpt: "The Oxford Handbook of the Historical Books of the Hebrew Bible offers 36 essays on the so-called "Historical Books": Joshua, Judges, 1-2 Samuel, 1-2 Kings, Ezra-Nehemiah, and 1-2 Chronicles. The essays are organized around four nodes: contexts, content, approaches, and reception. Each essay takes up two questions: (1) what does the topic/area/issue have to do with the Historical Books?" and (2) how does this topic/area/issue help readers better interpret the Historical Books?" The essays engage traditional theories and newer updates to the same, and also engage the textual traditions themselves which are what give rise to compositional analyses. Many essays model approaches that move in entirely different ways altogether, however, whether those are by attending to synchronic, literary, theoretical, or reception aspects of the texts at hand. The contributions range from text-critical issues to ancient historiography, state formation and development, ancient Near Eastern contexts, society and economy, political theory, violence studies, orality, feminism, postcolonialism, and trauma theory-among others. Taken together, these essays well represent the variety of options available when it comes to gathering, assessing, and interpreting these particular biblical books"--

Some of the valuable lessons that can be learned include: 1. work with dedication and excellence-Paul emphasized the importance of performing work diligently and giving one's best. In his writings, he encouraged believers to work as unto the Lord, recognizing that a job well done is a way of honoring God. 2. Finding satisfaction in work: Although Paul was an apostle and preacher, he also made his living as a tentmaker. Through his example, one can learn to find satisfaction and meaning even in seemingly ordinary or less prestigious jobs. He taught the importance of doing what you can to serve God and others through your work. 3. Selfless service: The apostle Paul promoted the idea of serving others without expectation of reward or personal recognition. He urged his followers to work with humility, seeking the welfare of others before their own. This mentality can help create a more cooperative and harmonious work environment. In summary, by studying the writings of the Apostle Paul, one can learn important lessons related to work, such as performing with dedication and excellence, finding satisfaction and meaning in work, serving unselfishly, valuing work-life balance, and working with integrity and honesty. These lessons can be applied to any field of work and help cultivate a positive, ethical attitude toward work.
