Book excerpt: Originally published in 1948, this now-classic study by Merrill Tenney treats the Gospel of John as a literary unit and provides a straightforward analysis of the text. Tenney first outlines the structure of the Gospel, then offers a careful exposition of John’s text according to six major periods of Christ’s life, and finally presents a topical analysis of the Gospel. Not a critical commentary but, rather, a well-organized guidebook complemented by helpful charts and diagrams, Tenney’s John: The Gospel of Belief, reissued in this new format, will continue helping pastors, teachers, students, and other Bible readers grasp the aim and major themes of John.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent monographs on Johannine signs tend to focus on a single sign. Other studies that examine multiple signs mainly focus on the first half of John’s Gospel. In Christian circles, most preachers and believers remain preoccupied by the traditional view that John’s Gospel contains only seven signs. However, what constitutes a sign for John, and how signs function to achieve the purpose of the Gospel (John 20:30–31) is far from settled. Three features of this book explore important clues for solving this puzzle: (1) a fresh hypothesis that Jesus’s signs correspond to the four tabernacle signs (a pot of manna, Aaron’s staff, the bronze altar cover, and the bronze serpent), which makes sense given the tabernacle/temple theme of John’s Gospel; (2) a complete study that examines Johannine signs in the whole Gospel systematically to reveal how signs develop the book’s purpose; and (3) an adaptation of a sociolinguistic theory to examine the corresponding texts of the Old Testament and New Testament in light of how language functions in a social event. The author will show how Jesus’s signs fulfill the functions of the four tabernacle signs, and how Jesus’s crucifixion is the “all-inclusive” sign in witnessing to his identity.

Book excerpt: These bible studies from the Gospel of John have been designed so that everyone can participate. Fundamental to the process is that the members of each group feel free to share their interpretations, their experiences and their contexts with others. Within the richness of the Gospel these studies follow the 'I am' sayings of Jesus, and John's theological use of them, and the 'Signs' in the Gospel of John.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most experts who seek to understand the historical Jesus focus only on the Synoptic Gospels of Mark, Matthew and Luke. However, the contributors of this volume come to an important consensus: that the Gospel of John preserves traditions that are independent of the Synoptics, and which are often as reliable as any known traditions for understanding the historical Jesus. As such, the contributors argue for the use of John's Gospel in Jesus research. The volume contains various critical approaches to historical inquiry in the Gospel of John, including new evaluations of the relationship between John and the Synoptics, literary and rhetorical approaches, comparative analysis of other early traditions, the judicious use of archaeological data, and historical interpretation of John's theological tendencies. Contributing scholars include Dale C. Allison, Jr., Paul N. Anderson, Harold W. Attridge, James H. Charlesworth, R. Alan Culpepper, Michael A. Daise, Craig S. Keener, George L. Parsenios, Petr Pokorný, Jan Roskovec, and Urban C. von Wahlde, who help to reassess fully the historical study of John's gospel, particularly with respect to the person of Jesus.

Book excerpt: The Knowing the Bible series is a new resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God’s Word. Each 12-week study leads participants through one book of the Bible and is made up of four basic components: (1) Reflection questions designed to help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) “Gospel Glimpses” highlighting the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) “Whole-Bible Connections” showing how any given passage connects to the Bible’s overarching story of redemption culminating in Christ; and (4) “Theological Soundings” identifying how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from a wide array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God’s grace on each and every page of the Bible. In this study of John’s Gospel, pastor and author Justin Buzzard helps readers understand the most theologically and philosophically profound account of Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection in the New Testament. From revealing his cosmic identity as being with the Father “in the beginning,” to recounting the many miraculous signs attesting to his divinity, Buzzard illuminates John’s unmatched portrait of Jesus Christ, the unique Son of God, sent from heaven to save all who would turn to him. This insightful guide encourages Christians to worship Christ as Lord and follow him on mission to the world.

Book excerpt: The man of God on the mountain is not only given the blueprint for the City of God in a vision, he himself-in his flesh-is also to be the blueprint. The Gospel of John and the Revelation both employ the elements of the Tabernacle as a pattern for their literary composition. The possibility that John used the same pattern to govern the composition of the three preserved epistles is worthy of investigation.Indeed, the complexity of the multilayered "construction" of these letters indicates a miraculous gift from God, the literary equivalent of the cunning work of the Spirit-filled artisans Bezalel and Aholiab. The difference, of course, is that John is building tents out of words, ministering to the camp of the saints in anticipation of the coming holy city. Identification of the literary "tessellations" not only reveals John's internal logic, and explains many, if not all, of the oddities and ambiguities in the text, but it also sheds light upon the authenticity of its infamous textual variant.

Book excerpt: A critical analysis of the historicity of the Gospel of John Since it began in 2002, the John, Jesus, and History Project has assessed critically the modern disparaging of John's historicity and has found this bias wanting. In this third volume, an international group of experts demonstrate over two dozen ways in which John contributes to an enhanced historical understanding of Jesus and his ministry. This volume does not simply argue for a more inclusive quest for Jesus—one that embraces John instead of programmatically excluding it. It shows that such a quest has already indeed begun.
