Book excerpt: These volumes provide a reference source of different gas chromatographic, liquid chromatographic, or thin-layer chromatographic techniques for the qualitative determination of various therapeutic agents, including antibiotics, vitamins and hormones, drugs of abuse in body fluids, dosage forms, or food stuffs. Over 5000 publications were reviewed to prepare tables of chromatographic data for 800 compounds, arranged alphabetically by generic drug name or by drug groups. A detailed summary of the extraction procedure described in each publication included in the table of a particular drug is also provided. This easy-to-read handbook is useful for selecting an appropriate chromatographic procedure for the determination of a given compound according to the available facilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects as a group occupy a middle ground in the biosphere between bac teria and viruses at one extreme, amphibians and mammals at the other. The size and general nature of insects present special problems to the student of entomology. For example, many commercially available in struments are geared to measure in grams, while the forces commonly en countered in studying insects are in the milligram range. Therefore, tech the study of insects or in those fields concerned with niques developed in the control of insect pests are often unique. Methods for measuring things are common to all sciences. Advances sometimes depend more on how something was done than on what was measured; indeed a given field often progresses from one technique to another as new methods are discovered, developed, and modified. Just as often, some of these techniques find their way into the classroom when the problems involved have been sufficiently ironed out to permit students to master the manipulations in a few laboratory periods. Many specialized techniques are confined to one specific research labo ratory. Although methods may be considered commonplace where they are used, in another context even the simplest procedures may save con siderable time. It is the purpose of this series (1) to report new develop ments in methodology, (2) to reveal sources of groups who have dealt with and solved particular entomological problems, and (3) to describe ex periments which might be applicable for use in biology laboratory courses.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive manual covers the main aspects of ion exchangers in chemistry, technical chemistry, and chemical engineering. It is a new edition of Dorfner's Ion exchangers--properties and applications (1972) which was the English translation of the German Ionenaustauscher (de Gruyter, Berlin, 1970). This edition is being issued directly in English in order to most effectively communicate with the international scientific and technical community. Applications of ion exchange technology have extended far beyond water treatment, and coverage here includes progress in such industries as sugar refining, purification of pharmaceuticals, hydrometallurgy (where knowledge of the use of ion exchange technology for uranium and copper hydrometallurgy has been upgraded, but the market for uranium and copper has deteriorated), solvent purification, catalysis, agriculture, medicine, and waste treatment. Chapters are self- contained, and a number introduce the field for beginners. Synthetic ion exchange resins are defined and discussed as reactive polymers. Appendices list commercial ion exchange materials and their sources of supply and provide computing tables for practical application. Despite de Gruyter's diligent efforts to use acid-free paper, this essential volume is printed on decidedly acidic paper. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Featured is a compre-hensive range of tables relating to the chromatographic separation and determination of amino acids, amines, and their derivatives. Methods of sample preparation and derivatization and methods of detection are described. Included are techniques for the liquid and gas chro-matographic separation of free amino acids and their derivatives, including o-phthalaldehyde, dansyl, and phenylthiolaydantoin deriva-tives. The separation of amino acid enantiomers is also described. This book will be invaluable to chemists, biochemists, and analysts involved in the separation and determination of amino acids or amines and their derivatives.
